We were able to squeeze into this tour last minute and I'm glad we did because it was informative as it was entertaining. However, there are a few things you need to know before going. They have multiple tour guides all focusing on the same locations but with their own flair. For example, our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, but he did not dwell on the details. Instead, he gave more of a historical overview of each location and later tied it to the supernatural, which was great because I'm more about the history than the supernatural stuff. Other guides that I overheard gave more of a dramatic retelling of certain stories tied to certain locations. So, it's a dice roll for what flavor of tour guide you and your group will receive. You can only purchase tickets online and once you do the email will tell you to meet at 127 Essex Street 30 minutes prior to the tour start time. It is crucial that you do just that because they will start early if most people are present. I highly recommend this tour and I recommend you do it early in your visit so that you and your party can truly appreciate Salem throughout your entire trip. Also, so you can pinpoint what locations you want to revisit prior to leaving. Tours and trolleys are truly the best way to get to know the location you're in, especially in the short amount of time you're there. read more

Fantastic tour! We had Scott as a tour guide. We took our 10 yo daughter and she had a lot of fun. He had a great sense of humor and provided lots of great history. Notably we went in September before the massive October crowds arrived. It was still a packed night tour. read more

Davey is awesome. He mixes ghost stories with history. His knowledge of the area is top notch and he has a great personality. Throw in a few of his dad jokes and it's a great time. I do not recommend this place. We booked a tour in Salem after coming specifically to the area after hearing about its uniqueness. We arrived 3 minutes late for the tour and they refused to wait for us. The girl in the shop wouldn't help us figure out where they were. After we begged her, she told us where they were, but when we got there, no one was around. We paid $140 for the tour and no one was willing to help us try to complete it, even though we notified them an hour and a half in advance that we would be delayed (the delay was not our fault, the road was blocked) read more

This was a fun ghost and history walking tour of Salem. Our tour guide was Davey and he did an amazing job. He was knowledgeable and very entertaining. His stories taught us a lot about Salem we likely wouldn't have learned otherwise. I highly recommend this tour! read more

Our tour guide (Katie) asked us to "stop recording the tour because it makes me feel like I'm in a fishbowl". My wife and I do these tours all over the country & this is the first time we've had this issue. If this is a policy or your company, you should make it known at the time of purchase. This is also the only tour we've ever been on that doesn't actually take you to the place of paranormal activity. Most of the tour was her stopping infront of random buildings and saying "Look across the street at that parking lot, now find the blue dumpster in the back left corner, behind that is a street that leads to a haunted cemetery".... Seriously? And then to ask us to not record, nothing you are showing us is proprietary info or property privately owned by your tour. This was a joke. Do better. Most of these tours encourage recording and photos. read more

Our tour guide Lamaris was great. Very knowledge of the area and the history. Great story teller, which made the tour all the better. This was by far the best tour I have done in the US. Lamaris hung around after talking with a few of us sharing more stories and giving advice about the area. Excellent! We weren't sure if we'd enjoy an hour and a half of information we'd probably already heard elsewhere, but our tour guide, April, was great! She kept everything at a good pace, was easy to hear, super informative, and even kept my friend's interest, and she admittedly loses interest fast. Even her 13 yo son enjoyed it!! read more

This was nothing more than a history lesson I learned a long time ago in Grade School. Elaina (I Gave it one more star for her ability to speak of the history, otherwise one star) did a nice job telling the story and my wife and I stayed through the Bridget Bishop story. After that we had enough and returned to our hotel. Am I a believer in Ghosts? No. Did this tour change my mind? No. The worst part about this tour is there are about 30 people on the tour, maybe more. As my Grandma once told me, You have to fear the living, not the dead. The city of Salem is not what I expected. I expected more of a small village in the mold of Mystic Seaport. I feel Salem is nothing more than a tourist trap for the gullible. read more

We had Sarah as our tour guide, a transplant from PA. She made things up as she went along. She claims the game Monopoly was created in Salem by the Parker Bros. she told a story of an elderly female ghost at the Seafood restaurant claiming to be a woman who once lived there. my daughter asked how old she was when she was killed. In messaging Hocus Pocus Tours with a couple questions about the tour and travel to and from Salem, the owner Susan replied immediately and suggested that I call her. This led to a one hour phone conversation where Susan was so gracious with her time, knowledge, and suggestions, not just about how to make the most of the tour, but how to appreciate a day in Salem. I can see why those who had the opportunity to take the in-person tour with Susan really enjoyed it. Covid changed the business model and Hocus Pocus now offers a self-guided tour by purchasing one of two tour apps. I opted for the $19.99 grand tour and it was well worth it. It has 37 points of interest. The app is user friendly and well designed. It provides a map of all stops, tracks where you are, and guides you to the next stop that you select on the tour. When you get to your stop, you can confirm you're at the right spot by comparing a photo of the site with what you see. Then you click on a 2-3 minute audio recording that provides a great snapshot of the significance of the site. As Susan had pointed out to me, there is much more to Salem than the historic witchcraft trials. It includes author Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of Seven Gables, America's oldest candy company, and other interesting sites. Of everything I visited, I experienced a very deep emotional connection with the 1692 Witchcraft Memorial with 20 stones dedicated to each of the victims of the witchcraft trial. The tour includes brief descriptions of some of the victims including those written about in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. If you plan to visit Salem, I highly recommend this tour. All sites can be visited on the outside and some on the inside at no charge. Some sites, such as The House of Seven Gables, charge separate admission fees. If you want to travel to Salem and don't have a car, the ferry from Boston offers a nice, scenic, and entertaining 50 minute ride. The commuter trains run more frequently and can come in handy if the ferry schedule coming or going doesn't meet your needs. There are plenty of good places to dine at to break up the tour. We had lunch at FINZ and really enjoyed it (I'll post separately about that).

The tour itself was a few hours and you walk to all of the sites in Salem with historical significance. There is so much to learn from Salem. So much history and heartbreak. It really is eye opening to hear the stories oof the witch trials and how the witch trials began and who all was wrongly persecuted. The tour guides were so nice and explained everything with such great details. This tour was definitely the highlight of our trip in Salem. I highly highly recommend Hocus Pocus Tours, I learned so much regarding Salem, the witch trials, the history behind the two, and a little bit of Hocus Pocus and Bewitched. So much fun!

However, I did not want a tour that was tacky or strange. The morning stroll tour of Salem with Kenneth got good reviews and seemed legit and not too cheesy. I definitely have to say that he delivered! The tour group was about 25 people, which was a good size and did not feel too big. We walked around Salem and learned about not just the witch trials, but also many other stories of the history of Salem and important people who lived there. We spent some time at the memorial site for those that were executed and he brought some flowers to place on the stone, which was a tad cheesy but also kind of nice. Kenneth is very informative and was willing to answer any and all questions. He very obviously has a passion for Salem history. The only thing I would say is a bathroom break and maybe even a snack break would have been nice. The tour went at least 2.5 hours even though it was supposed to be 2 hours. We appreciated the extra time he gave us and it was nice that he wasn't in a rush. However, we had traveled over 4 hours that morning to make the tour and could have used some food and a bathroom. The tour is reasonably priced and a recommended thing to do to see Salem and learn some actual history!

That said, Sam was great and theatric and was a blast, you can tell he really likes what he does. I didn't seem to catch any ghosts in the pictures I took, but overall, I still enjoyed myself and had a better time on this tour than I did on another I took with a different company earlier in the year.
