WOWIE ZOWIE what a night! I got to record a live album on the Salisbury House's 1600's piano that Steinway built out of old out houses and shipped over seas for the house! One of the most valuble pianos in the country this was quite the experience. Salisbury House & Gardens in Des Moines, Iowa, is home to library, fine art, rare book, historic document, decorative art and musical instrument collections of international significance, as recognized by appraisers, peers in the museum field, rare book librarians and collectors, and prominent media outlets. Signed books and documents by Abraham Lincoln, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Charles Dickens, Queen Elizabeth I, Joseph Smith, D.H. Lawrence and many others tangibly bring history to life. This beautiful building is full of crazy history you would not expect in Des Moines! You should definately take a tour or go to an event here! You will not be sorry!

Right after our tour of Terrace Hill Historical building, we were feeling an urge to experience more Des Moines history, so we drove a few minutes over to Salisbury House to participate in their tour! One big difference right away we noticed between this and Terrace Hill is there is much more staff here and the grounds/building is much bigger! There are plenty of visitor parking on the grounds so parking is not an issue. Follow the signs to get to the staff member who will be able to set you up with a tour of your choice, self or guided. You can check on their website for the price differences and tour times (they are set). For the guided tour you have access to a couple of exclusive rooms and get the history of the house explained to you. We went with the guided tour and did not regret it. The tour takes just over an hour and it was a very educating and fun experience! We actually began our tour the same time as another group began their self-guided tour. About 20 minutes into our tour, the self-guided group left the building. Without a guide, you just take a look at the historical building and the rooms without knowing their stories so the tour is quick. The staff members are very friendly and funny! Knowing what history of this building allows me to feel educated about the city I live in and sometimes I just can't believe this is actually in Des Moines! If you have not toured here, come and take a guided tour!

This was an amazing mansion and absolutely beautiful. The art alone is worth it. However next time I am going on the guided tour!!! Staff here is super friendly and checks in on you with the self guided tour. It was a slow day so we ended up with a partially guided tour. This place is huge. Plan at LEAST a few hours to get through it and admire the details. Especially if you are an art or architecture junkie like me!!!

After a whole year of discussing a visit to this historical Des Moines attraction, we finally made it! (pats self on back) I am so glad that we finally squeezed the Salisbury House in to my weekend visit itinerary. We set aside an hour to explore all 22,000 square feet of the 1923 home located just outside of downtown Des Moines. From the lavish tapestries to the Egyptian artwork, the Weeks family didn't cut any corners in building their plush residence. The home was modeled after a mansion they saw while visiting Salisbury, England (hence the name). If you're like me, you're wondering, how did these folks pull off building a 3million dollar home in the 20s? We can thank Mr.Weeks for inventing what is today known as lady's foundation/makeup concealer. Huh, right? The home has dozens of rooms modeled after French and English architecture and interior design surrounded by beautifully manicured landscaping beds. I was very impressed by the guide booklet that is included with your $8 adult admission to the house. It offered a room-by-room description making it easy to tour the home on your own. Note that guided tours are also available by appointment.

Pretty cool place to spend an hour or two. Did the tour on my own which I liked so I could go back and look at my own pace. They give you a guidebook (which was a little out of date, hopefully they replace). The cottage was out of commission due to construction or something which was disappointing. Otherwise very interesting if you like old architecture.

Little did I know there was going to be free food and drinks in a new fancy pants events space.. The River Center is set up perfect for an event like this! Lots of space upstairs and down stairs, and also fun outdoor space! The River Center had bar set up in all three locations as well, up/down, and outside! The staff was super nice and were super accommodating! I got to check out the upstairs bathroom cause naturally I brought my son ( bad idea?) and he had to go! Bathrooms were super nice, the food looks fab (again my son ate like 5 fancy cookies) and the space and sound system worked really well! If you were going to have a huge wedding, prom, or a big corporate event, this would be a great spot to do it.. It's fancy without being, to fancy. It got lots of parking around it, and it's close to other fun restaurants and bars, and the baseball stadium if you need to venture out and eat more food since you didn't get to eat 5 cookies like your kid.

We arrived a couple of hours before our event at Hoyt Sherman, which is right down the street, so that we could have a leisurely experience. We were seated at one of the tables by a front window, so we had a nice view of both the lovely inside and the front lawn. My wife avoids cow dairy, so the staff was great about making sure each dish she got was adjusted to her liking. She got the cardini salad for her starter, a wonderfully fresh assortment of veggies. She then opted for the cavatelli (sans cheese), and it was wonderful homemade pasta and a great blend of sausage and sauce. I got the gnocchi, which was just as delightful. Beautiful pillows of gnocchi with a tasty lightly spiced curry sauce. We topped off our meal by sharing the chocolate torte, and it was a wonderful finish to the meal. They have a pretty thorough wine list which is tilted toward Italian wines. Those aren't my fav, so I got a martini, which was fantastic! My wife got the prosecco, which was fairly dry, which was what she was aiming for. Service was attentive, friendly, and overall exceptional. This will not be your least expensive meal in the area, but I always feel like I get value out of my overall experience.

They do a small limited menu, everything is fresh and locally sourced which I loved. Set in an old Victorian home in historic Sherman Hills area of Des Moines this place is quiet, small on the inside with a homey romantic vibe. Tyler at the bar is amazing at what he does as a mixologist. My husband commented it was the best old fashioned he'd ever had! Our service was wonderful, paced very well. We felt we had enough time to chat, eat and take the ambiance in! A wonderful place for a date night, a celebration or a night out! Parking is limited to the street, no meters. But during busier times you might have to park farther away and walk a few blocks. Definitely a must do in Des Moines!

The owners are responsive to email and text messages…read more Unfortunately, they have too many restrictions for the space to work for the high school graduation party I was hoping to have there. They did not seem very keen to having a DJ playing music, but teenagers don't want to dance to their playlists, they want DJs. I was hoping I could put the DJ in the big room so there would be plenty of space to dance. Unfortunately, they don't allow dancing in that space. They wanted to set up the DJ at the back entrance, at space that has a hole in the middle of the floor with plants coming out of it. It's also about half the size of the big room. Teenagers are self-conscious enough, and don't need to have people walking into the event at the same space where they are trying to dance. If they had been more flexible with allowing dancing in the big room, it would have been the perfect setting because they allow you to bring your own food and they have a separate space to set it up, away from the big room. Oh well, it didn't work out for me but it's still a cool event space.
