The building houses the Mairie and a theatre, and was started in 1190 by the Capitouls, the city leaders or consuls, to establish a centre for municipal authority. However, the building that we see today, although incorporating some older structures, dates essentially from the 18th century.
It is named after the ancient Capitol, the temple of Jupiter.
Its interior courtyard and the Salle des Illustres are well worth visiting. In the Donjon (former keep) is the modern tourist office.
