This is a great place to visit when in Cooperstown. We came here after our opening ceremonies. They serve all types of foot from sandwiches to pizza. They have great selection of pizza by the slice. The slices are affordable and huge. Not to mention delicious. I also got a Greek salad with chicken which was good as well. I would recommend coming to this place if you are in town. My family has gone here many times, because there aren't many places to eat in Cooperstown. It's always been okay but never great. This most recent visit, the pizza was so greasy (cheese pizza), I've never seen pizza still drip after soaking up grease with napkins. The pizza is poor to mediocre in quality. However, my biggest issue with the place is that their staff refused service to my friend who is obviously Muslim/not white. My husband is from the area and we visit Sal's everytime we are in the area. The lasagna pizza is my favorite but the sandwiches are amazing too. We are never disappointed! The only reason I dont give Sal's 5 stars is the service. Those guys act like they'd rather be dead then serving you pizza. This is also consistant! Never nice, always rude and I dont buy the 'tourists are exhausting bs' that Cooperstown thrives on for 2 reasons. One, you wouldnt have thriving businesses without the DreamsPark and the tourists. If you're looking for a quick bite to eat while you're visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame, this is a nice independent pizzeria that you can dine at. It's right across from the museum, their service is quick, and their prices are fair; although the food was just very mediocre. I wouldn't really recommend this place for the quality of their food; but more for their price, the convenience, and their service. The owner & staff were very friendly. They also have free Wi-Fi available inside their restaurant. As for their food, they serve more than just pizzas. They also make burgers, hot subs, calzones, spaghetti, lasagna, ravioli, chicken wings, etc. They really do have a nice different variety of food in their menu, but my entire party just thought that their food was just "okay". Sal's is classic pizza-by-the-slice, New York style. Thank means it's basically the most delicious thing that exists. During my stay in Cooperstown, I found myself coming back here day after day. If I lived in Cooperstown (or nearby), the would definitely be one of my regular spots. I tried the lasagna pizza on my first visit, which is piled high with meaty toppings. Recommended for all the carnivores out there. But the clear-cut winner for me was their spinach pizza. Cheese, tomato, more cheese and spinach, all melted together on top of a garlic butter crust. I could seriously eat this for every meal for the rest of my life and be happy. And for some-odd-reason, the Yuengling on tap here just tastes better than any where else in the world. The inside of Sal's was really dumpy. The lighting was bad, and part of the restaurant was cleared off for construction (and there was construction going on during business hours). The tables are no-frills plastic booths that look like they haven't been updated since 1981. But if you can get past that (I can!), Sal's is a good, cheap choice. I didn't try the pizza since I'd just had some elsewhere the day before, but it did smell good enough to be tempting. Instead, I had the fish fry, which was advertised for $6.95. Given the restaurant's appearance and the meal's price point, I wasn't expecting much, but I was in for a pleasant surprise. The fish fry is really just a plate of fish and chips. The fish is a huge haddock filet. The outside was coated with a crispy breading, and the inside was tender and flaky. The french fries were thickly cut (but not as large as steak fries) and mealy. Everything on the plate came out piping hot, and ketchup and tartar sauce came on the side without asking for it, which is a plus in my book. I had to get salt by swiping it from an empty table, but that's the only downside I have to say about the food. My experience with the staff was neutral; the service wasn't exceptionally pleasant, but it wasn't rude, either. No complaints there. If atmosphere isn't a big deal to you and you want a cheap eat, Sal's is a recommendation. read more

For me, pizza is pizza and hardly my first choice for any meal but for my boys (husband and son) it's everything and then some! We were in town last year from Seattle, WA to watch our son play baseball at the Cooperstown Dreams Park. We were hungry and of course the kid chooses pizza for lunch. I am a huge fan of really thin pizza crust so when I saw the pies I knew I was going to be ok. The toppings weren't heavy, mighty tasty and the cheese wasn't overly done either. Just the right amount for this anti-cheese lover. We ate out back (it was mid August) on picnic tables to get away from the busy dining area inside and to enjoy the sweet smells of NY. I thought everyone was really friendly and our server suggested a great IPA for my husband who was very ready for an adult beverage at that point. =) I would never consider 'flying it in' but if ever I find myself back in the quant little, historic town of Cooperstown...you know where to find me! read more

The food here is below average to average. Four of us went and none were pleased with the food nor service. Waited close to 50 minutes for two stromboli plates that we were assured on multiple occasions would be out soon which then turned to "I don't know what to tell you, it'll be out soon". Soon after the waitress spilled my friends bottled water on him and the floor. Also the food here is way overpriced as well as the drinks. Three waters and a Dr. Pepper costs $14. As me and my friends were exiting and almost entirely down the street and out of sight she ran out of the run down building and shouted foul language directed at my black friend. We had a limited window to get our 12U baseball team to the HOF after our last game of the day - and then needed to get them fed. Problem: The HOF - and Sal's - closes at 7pm. Solution: Manager Adria worked with us to let us pre-order, then bring our whole hungry team (and families) to Sal's spacious patio just before closing. The staff graciously stayed after and took care of 27 grateful people with delicious pasta, salads, and huge pizzas. The pizza was really good but no one in there wears gloves. They are touching every pizza and every menu item without gloves and without washing their hands. Conveniently located on Main Street down the block from the "Baseball Hall of Fame"... I should have known this place would suck as we walked in because the pizzas in their display case didn't look all that good, pasty white crust with barely melted cheese. Bur we were hungry and we ordered 2 large pizzas, one with sausage and one with meatball. All I can say is, this pizza is probably THE WORST pizza I have EVER had. After a few hours in the museum, with a task master who insisted that we eat quick and get on the road, Sal's was a quick stop on main street for reheated slices. I got a slice of the Hawaiian (ham, pineapple, and pepperoni), and a slice of the white pizza (spinach, tomatoes, and ricotta, no sauce). You stand in line to order at the counter, and then they'll bring you the slices. Or if the line is as long as it was for us, the slices were pretty much ready by the time we got through the line, got our drinks (fountain and bottled), and paid. They've got a covered back porch, which we preferred to the stuffiness of the inside that was packed with little league teams. The red pepper flakes and parmesan cheese get doled out to the tables pretty quickly, so you'll probably have to ask around to borrow from another table. The pizza was decent, though not terribly flavorful. In that regard, I preferred the Hawaiian with plenty of red pepper flakes. The white pizza toppings were in blobs, so you'd get a mouthful of spinach or ricotta, but not both... and you could tell that it was frozen spinach with every bite. I did see others with salads, so I guess they took the time to read the menu that is above the door. I was too distracted by the pies that were hanging out waiting to be reheated. read more

We ordered at the counter, 1 slice of cheese pizza and a spaghetti with sausage. The gentleman taking my order gave me a funny look..guess they don't see too many Chinese Californians. My son liked the pizza...he gives it 5 stars. He said it was great. The spaghetti was also good, el dente. The sausage had a little heat, but just a little. Checked out this place during Baseball HOF weekend trip...so good we went back twice! I know we were not in NYC, but their slices are exactly what I'd expect from any quality pizza shop in the city. The crust was spot-on floppy and crispy cooked in those large industrial pizza ovens. Sauce had a great compliment between a slight sweetness but moreso a tangy / zesty component that worked really well together. The cheese was drippy and gooey making for a perfect slice. I also had a side salad which had a nice compliment of assorted veggies and came with a house-made Italian dressing. Nothing fancy here, just rock solid 'za. Would definitely return. read more

People of Color BEWARE. Racism is tolerated here. I am the Executive Director of a Texas based non-profit that aims to connect low-income, high achieving students to top tier colleges across the country. Our students are from the greater Houston-area and are predominantly students of color. Each summer, we host college tours across the country to visit schools like Harvard, Yale, Brown, Colgate, Union, Cornell, Syracuse and about 30 others. While I live and work in Houston now, I am originally from upstate New York and spent most of my childhood summers on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown. When I found out that our college tour would be to this part of the country, I requested that we build time in our schedule to stop in Cooperstown for dinner. I have a special place in my heart for this town and I thought that it would be a great opportunity for our students to explore a small town in the area, see the lake, and grab a bite to eat. I was also personally excited to return to a place that held such fond childhood memories. Unfortunately, during our stop in Cooperstown, ALL of our students who visited Sal's Pizza Shop for dinner shared that they felt mistreated & disrespected by the person working behind the counter (an older man...most likely one of the owners). They also expressed feeling anxious, scared and unwanted in the restaurant based on the attitude that the person behind the counter was exuding. All of our students shared that they felt the mistreatment was a result of the color of their skin. From not making eye contact, to putting change on the counter instead of in one of our chaperone's hands, to a rude attitude and disrespectful comments, our students and staff were not treated like the amazing people that they are. Hearing about this made me irate. Additionally, after searching the reviews on Sal's this weekend, it seems that the majority of people leaving "1 star" ratings are majority people of color. One of our students shared with tears in her eyes at our nightly meeting that this was the first time in her life that she had experienced blatant racism and she was unsure if upstate New York was going to be the right place for her for college. If the employee at this establishment is reading this, I hope you recognize how your actions impact young hearts and minds. I am MORTIFIED that I suggested your establishment as a place for student to eat. It will never happen again. I debated if I was going to post this or not but I have not been able to shake my anger about the interaction and reflections that I heard after our visit. My hope in posting this is not to shame the staff member at Sal's Pizza. I doubt this person will change his behavior and attitude...however, I hope this highlights our experience for any other student group, family, company, team or church group visiting Cooperstown in the future. No one should have to endure this sort of mistreatment and I hope that this is a wake up call that it is 2017 and it will not be tolerated. All in all...if you are looking for a place to eat in Cooperstown, choose another spot. read more

The pizza tastes fine but the counter guys were shocked when I ordered 10 individual slices of different types of pizza instead of a whole pizza. The concept of having 6 little kids who want pizza now - and want their own types of pizza - and don't have the patience for them to make a fresh pie - completely floored them. A business is typically in business to make money - exchange goods for money - but apparently they prefer to pick what goods you purchase. Dirty. And...dirtier. The guy served us in an almost reluctant manner, and made no attempt to hide that he was touching everything with his bare hands--after having just walked over into the kitchen from the dining room. Did he wash his hands before putting them all over the pizza to toss it into the oven? You bet not. Did he then grab handfuls of cheese to spread over the second slice before putting it into the oven? Yes. And can you guess if he ate handfuls of cheese while doing all of this? You guessed right! As reluctant as he was to sell us pizza, was just about as reluctant as I was to eat it. I couldn't help think how gross the whole process was, and ended up tossing the half eaten slice into the trash on the way out. A "thank you" was still politely shared with the pizza guy, only to be returned with a blank stare and no reply. Skip Sal's pizza and go eat anywhere else in town. read more
