Stopped by after work to try some of the Cinco de Mayo 2026 special menu items (05/01-05/05). It was not overly crowded and it was open seating. We were greeted shortly by our waiter Caden. Our waiter was extremely polite and very attentive. I can only speak in the items I personally tried the watermelon jalapeño margarita was a 7.5/10. There wasn't a strong watermelon flavor and there really wasn't a kick from the jalapeño. The bartender wasn't definitely not shy with the liquor but it wasn't over powering. The shrimp and crab ceviche was probably a 8/10 ( could've been a 9/10 but it had cucumbers in it). It had a tad bit too much lime juice or lime taste. The shrimp and crab dip was delicious! 9/10. Lovely looking place. The service was good. Pretty much right there when you needed them with decent recommendations. For appetizers, I loved the lobster and spring roll. That was delicious. Also got the lobster and crawfish dip ok and one can never go wrong with calamari which was also good. For dinner, I had the salmon and grits and kale. It was ok because not quite what I was expecting - I was expecting spicy and it was too sweet for me but might be my fault for not fully reading the description and being focused on the Cajun seared aspect of it. It was still good though. Nothing superb but filling and loved the crunchy kale on top. Really liked that they were open on a Monday and they were fast. At one point, too fast because one of my co- diner's dinner came too soon while still eating their salad. For dessert, we got the cinnamon roll cheesecake and shared it. We have never been and some friends wanted to go there for lunch. There were 11 of us in our party, which is definitely above the number we prefer to eat out with. Service was still timely and we had a friendly server. They seated us by the door which they left propped open and it was cold that day. Not fun at all Mike had the tacos and he chose one of each. Shrimp, catfish and chicken. He enjoyed them. They did have a lot of sauce on each one which is right up his alley, but not so much mine I got the shrimp Poboy. I ended up eating only half the bread with the shrimp because they were not enough shrimp for that large piece of bread. Still craving some creole/cajun food while in Jackson, MS, this place was another recommend by locals. I had such a great red fish dish just yesterday so I had to order it again. I also had gumbo. Now here the redfish was called black fish because it's blackened. It was sitting on top of grilled Brussels sprouts and crispy red potatoes. It was bathed in their crab Worcestershire sauce. The fish was nicely grilled and felt fresh and had flaky meat which yielded a great texture. But the sauce didn't quite reach the flavor i wanted it to taste and compliment the fish. It overpowered the natural redfish flavor and it even hid the crab flavor which kinda worked against its original intended plan. This dish was only ok. The gumbo didn't quite satisfy me either. The restaurant is housed on a public school from 1927. We found street parking right in front & wandered down the school hall passing a salon & shop. The restrooms were the old school bathrooms. Jeremy waited on us, he was on point. We started with cold, local drafts, fried green tomatoes with blackened shrimp, crawfish étouffée and some very fresh large oysters on the half shell. This is the first seafood restaurant that I've been able to eat comfortably without worrying about my shellfish allergy. My catfish was good and seasoned to perfection. I will just ask them to fry it hard next time. The fries are hand cut and those they were limp, they were still so good. I will take limp hand cut fries over limp and frozen fries. The hush puppies were sooooo good!! I also had the grits and they add goat cheese to it. While I'm not a fan of goat cheese, it was good mixed in the grits. Whenever I go home, I would usually go out of Hinds County to the north and to the east for good restaurant offerings. However, there is a neighborhood called Fondren that is not far from where I grew up that has some nice cafes and restaurants. This time, I told my classmate that I wanted to try Saltine because this was one where I had not been yet. We ordered small plates. The shrimp and lobster spring rolls reminded me of Thai egg rolls that cannot be beaten. The only difference was that these spring rolls had been deep fried. The loaded shrimp and crayfish dip with tortillas was another hit that I would definitely order on any repeat visits. The fried green tomatoes topped with blackened shrimp and crayfish etouffee was a delicious twist that no other restaurant has topped to date. I never had crab claws fried and having them at Saltine was a blast. Saltine is a lively restaurant. There is plenty of seating. And I will tip my hat for the outstanding service. For a restaurant that is heavy in seafood, the prices are surprisingly less that what you pay at most seafood restaurants. However, the food was of high-end quality. Simply Ahhhmazing! Every aspect of this restaurant is amazing. So this used to be a school. I used to drive by this place. So now it's a place to dine and more. The Saltine is the crème de la crème! It's so beautiful inside. The original wood floors and doors are still there. There's a beautiful mural of an octopus' legs holding things like a wine bottle, a boat, and a pirate's knife. Probably the things he found on the sea floor. It's such a pretty drawing. Also, there's a huge, half oval-shaped bar with plenty of whatever you want. My friend ordered a Lemon Drop, and she went for a second one. We each got the Poboy. I got the fried oyster poboy, and it was deep-fried, which gave it a crunch. The creole mayo and the trimming added extra flavor. The bun was very soft and flaky. It was just perfect. I got the gumbo on the side. It was a dark roux, the sausage had a spice that kicked up the flavor, and the shrimp was seasoned to perfection. I could have eaten the shrimp alone. But I really loved the roux. We also went for the half dozen oysters at first, and then ordered another half dozen. I think what I liked was that we could mix the flavors. So we ordered the Citrus Butter and the Oysters Rockefeller, which is spinach and shallots, and it's covered in Parmesan cheese. The Oyster Lafitte is a crawfish tail, bacon, parmesan, and hot sauce butter. Now you see why we ordered another round of oysters. I asked the hostess about the fries, and she was right when she said they're very good and that they're a favorite. So it's a bed of fries with cheese, grits, and crawfish on top. It honestly was the best lunch I have had in a long time. I will advice you to go with friends and try most of the menu. It's really the only way to do it! One more thing, there's plenty of parking behind the building. Come in on the side of the bank. Also, you will want to stay a while after lunch. There's so much to see in the building. Fried green tomatoes covered with mini crawfish etoufee sounded interesting but was soggy and the tomatoes were overpowered by the etoufee. Didn't care for the thick batter on the small plate fried oysters (7-8 to an order, so large portions). The batter was bland. Wouldn't order either again. Shared the blackened redfish special - pretty good and tasty; although the redfish was NOT blackened. The goat cheese grits were excellent, but most were covered in etoufee. The kitchen loves their etoufee I think. Very bland etoufee with microscopic crawfish. Best meal we had in MS on our weekend trip. My daughter wanted gumbo and that's the only place we could find open on a Sunday. We had fish and grits, Cajun pasta, fresh oysters, gumbo, and shrimp dip for lunch. The atmosphere is modern and nice. Prices are fair but a little high for MS. Met a friend here for brunch. I decided on the banana fosters pancakes with a pineapple mimosa. It came with 2 pancakes and a side of bacon. The pancakes were a nice size and came with bananas on the top and fosters sauce on them. (I requested an extra side of syrup.) Our server was a total sweetheart. Very attentive and efficient. I visited Saltine while spending the day in Jackson. I saw great reviews and that the menu looked great. The building is cool and I like the modern, coastal feeling decor. After arriving, I sat at the bar and wasn't greeted for a while. The staff member behind the bar was very apologetic that the bartender didn't come over yet. I moved my seat closer to where the bartenders were, and was finally acknowledged after a few minutes. After getting my drink, it took a while to have someone put my food order in. The goat cheese grits were delicious, and so was the pork belly. I really enjoyed the pork belly and everything on top of it.
