The most peaceful place to walk/bike and see lots of wildlife. If you love birds, it's wonderful especially in the spring. I walk my dog here regularly. She loves it, too. We loved this park. We could see signs that a hurricane had taken away some of the trees and it was bare in some spots, but they are doing a great job replacing trees with new beautiful landscape. I love the magnolia idea. I loved our spot, even though there wasn't a lot of trees right next to us. It still felt cozy and you could hear the frogs and stuff nearby. Our favorite spot was walking around the Bayou type, waterways and enjoying beautiful serenity of this amazing park. We use the showers and we're quite happy with them and met some very nice people. We would definitely stay here over and over we love the hospitality of the area and the people that run this place. We're amazingly nice. read more

Stayed at the park while traveling thru. Beautiful, quiet, clean, neat, accessible state park. Easy shopping nearby. So peaceful, serene. Concrete pads level, easy in and out, full hookups, very nice laundry room. Met the camp hosts, very friendly. No problem with verizon service. Would definitely stay again if in the area. If senior pass member, the fee is even better. I would recommend to people with kids...great bike paths. read more

I am glad to see the park is open. I wanted to see the noticeable upgrades after the hurricane. This park still needs to be improved. The RV area was full and popping with outdoor games. Though the RV are packed in tightly without any coverage from trees. I saw many cute white tents and 3 cabins for lodging. Two boats and some kayakers were taking advantage of the boat launch. The walking bridge that covers the small pond is cute for all. Be prepared, it is hot and humid out there. You will need a hat, helmet, OFF, Sun Block, First Aid, replacement bike parts, water, and snacks. Don't forget about your dogs... They also could need Water, treats, flea/ tick/ bug spray, First-Aid, and a leash. Some people brought their dogs, let them swim in the Calcasieu River too cool off (Watch For Alligators). Time for a dirt/mountain bike ride with some of my friends. My 6.77-mile bike trip was a large loop. It was a bit intense. The trails were not marked clearly. Then the trail turned into a small pond with a piece of wood for bikers to cross. These trails need appropriate attention and maintenance. Make sure to not ride if it has rained recently. I was muddy from head to toe. I found a bike area to maintenance or clean your bike. There is a water hose to the right of the restrooms near the trails. There are plenty of convenient parking spots available. Also, cold bottled beverages are available there. It is cute and smells clean. read more

This was our first time camping here and although it's been a number of years since I spent anytime in this park I knew I'd want to stay here while in the area. I grew up not far from here in comparison to how far I traveled to camp here this time, so it goes without saying I was looking forward to spending the four nights I reserved. Just looking at the amenities and the condition of the infrastructure as a whole this is by no means in the class of a luxurious RV Resort but that's also part of its charm and it comes moderately priced. Camping amongst the pine trees and within walking distance of the meandering river that was swollen beyond its banks this visit provided everything we were looking for. The paved roads and well maintained trails made for excellent biking so be sure to bring them with you. I reserved the campsite online through ReserveAmerica and was provided detailed information and photos of the site prior to reserving it and placing a deposit. I agree with the other reviewer that you really want to confirm the amenities at the particular site you choose to ensure you get what you need. The site I reserved had sewer and fresh water hook-ups as well as clean 50 amp service and this particular site had a nice level concrete pad large enough to park my 38' coach and provided parking for our tow vehicle and still plenty of space to set up our patio furniture. The maintenance crew does an excellent job keeping the camp ground nice and tidy, it was nice to see the grass cut and the entire camping area raked clean which provided little cover for any reptiles a.k.a snakes that might be looking for higher ground, there's also lots of shade to take the strain off your A/C units which is a must this time of the year to keep the interior comfortable. The first day we encountered monsoon rains which was a little concerning with a lighting strike in close proximity to our site which was a little unnerving but once the rain stopped there was no standing water anywhere since the sandy soil absorbed it quickly and beautiful sunshine to follow. The gates close at 9:00 PM but the staff provided us the combination for the lock to come and go after hours as well as parking passes. I'd definitely return to stay here again... read more

Beautiful state park and check in was very friendly. Sites were level, modern and well maintained. Bath house at the campground was very clean. We only stayed overnight but would have loved to stay longer and enjoy the park. Big thank you to the young woman at check in (I will call and get her name). She was extremely friendly and welcoming - we didn't have reservations and she was helpful as we chose from the few remaining sites and suggested where we could buy firewood. She was a great first impression for the park. The park is beautiful and large with newly paved roads and extremely well maintained. Definitely one of the best state parks we have visited and would love to visit again. Thank you. read more

The courtesy officer is a pan! He constantly harasses you for any thing. He tries to make up his own rules. Beware of him and read your contract so that you know whether he's being fair in HIS rules! Will probably not visit again due do the erroneous harassment. read more

A truly enjoyable and simple to access park. Currently they charge $2 per person for entry. They have good amenities for camping, the roads are always filled with families and cyclists, and the trails wind through the woods to let you explore. Additionally, they have bathrooms that are okay and some really nice spots for fishing, but MY PERSONAL and BIGGEST attraction here is the DISC GOLF course. I am from Austin, TX so since I was traveling in the area I insisted on checking out Louisiana's newest course addition to the sport. I was happily impressed. I met some local players David & Linda and they were gracious to play a round with me and show the "local" routes (as we coin a phrase in disc golf). If you are familiar with disc golf, then you know this behavior is not unexpected... disc golfers socially enjoy meeting other players and simply hang out. The course is a good tight blend of wooded holes. It seems to be a simple layout, until you hit a tree and find yourself in the rough (as with almost any course). If you are a righty or a lefty, beginner or advanced.. the course can accommodate all the changes you would appreciate . I specifically like this course because of its location and specifically because it is a GREAT family activity in the park and it is a good simple layout that will challenge experienced players and not beat beginners into submission. It is a great course to simply grow the sport and get more people playing. As I walked the course with David and Linda, we traded "shop talk" about disc golf. They help consult and make this course better as often as they can. I am from Austin, a member of the Professional Disc Golf Association, and a board member of one of the largest disc golf clubs around Texas (the Waterloo DGC has over 420 members).. so essentially, we do have a wide berth of experience about courses and I see that State Park of Louisiana is well on its way to having a GREAT course as it develops. Overall, visit the park for its affordable and family friend amenities, scenic back drops, and quiet tranquility, but I would say bring some discs, find a local player, and go throw some plastic in the treed forest of Sam Houston Jones State Park. Paying to play here is the best $2 you can spend to have a great time and support your parks system. read more

Great campground! Restrooms and showers pretty clean for a campground. Nature abounds.... The sounds of croaking frogs and cicadas at night was amazing. Added bonus... Free washers and dryers! One word of advice.... Select your spot carefully. Most do NOT have sewer hookups... Some do but it was unclear to us from the website which do (we should have called). read more

This is a very clean and very wild park. There are animals everywhere. Me and my wife go here several times a year to hike and bike the trails. Great place for active people. read more
