Smallish selection, particularly in the books and non-clothing items. But overall cute little place. The $1 sale rack in the back is usually worth checking. read more

There are rails and rails of clothes from the 1920s onwards, a men's section on the third floor and oodles of linen, accessories, hats and suitcases. Even old, working sewing machines, buttons and fabulous Vogue patterns from the 1950s. Just when you think you've seen everything, there's another nook or cranny just waiting to be explored. The only heartbreaking thing is that in many cases, the sizes are just too small for most people today. A consequence of changing body shapes, I suppose. But if you are a size 16, then prepare for a long rummage to find something your size. I know, I've been there. But if you look like Christina Hendricks, there's every chance you could leave looking like an extra from Mad Men or like you've walked from the pages of The Best of Everything. Now, the only thing is to find Don Draper.....

However, I was informed that it was not permissible to try more than two items at a time. I endeavored to remain composed despite feeling quite upset. At the checkout, I politely inquired whether I could return the shoes if they proved to be too large. Although I had tried them on in the shop and found them too big, I thought they might be suitable for my mother. In response, I received an extremely rude and elevated reply. In my twenty years residing in this country, this was the first occasion I felt unwelcome as a foreigner. This experience was particularly unexpected coming from a second-hand shop and especially from an elderly lady.

TK Maxx is where the old kwicksave store used to be, and it really is one of the best shops in town. I have had plenty of designer bargains from here. I would definitely suggest going first thing in the morning as everything is really tidy and the real bargains have been put out! The downsides to this store is it does generally look like a jumble sale if you get there after 10am and you do have to rummage through quite a lot of tat to get the bargains.
