If you are looking for real wood smoked barbeque then look no further. Don't be fooled by the exterior. Inside is clean and bright. The staff was very nice and friendly. I had a jumbo pork sandwich and they made a bean and slaw sandwich for my vegetarian wife. She loved it. The pork was perfect as was the spicy sauce. Finished it off with an amazing slice of pie! "No wood no good" said the cook! Agreed!

Found this Gem on Yelp. Drove 25 miles out of my way Best customer service that I have ever seen. Had the jumbo bbq sandwich with a topping of Cole slaw and Bbq sauce. Topped it off with Chess pie. 5 for this spot!

To say that Sam's is modest and unassuming is an understatement. But Sam's is not exactly off the foodie radar either. Word has that it's has been a Gibson Co. presence since the '40's. Sam's got press a couple of years ago before the pit burned up and almost destroyed the property. They had their own $50 designer t-shirts in Oak Hall as a fundraiser to rebuild. And it was rebuilt, with help from chefs and foodies from around the south. From what I read of the old place, the new facility is spacious and updated with industrial-chic lighting and flat-screen TV's. Aside from random clutter in the windows, the current dining area is actually clean-ish, which is normally a red flag for a business burning trees a couple of walls away. Updated decor (by BBQ joint standards) aside, Sam's is the real, traditional, and disappearing west TN slow-cooked BBQ joint. All meat is cooked over acorn- or fruit-bearing wood, whichever they have on hand and feel like burning on a given day. The backyard of the property is littered with stumps and limbs that will eventually be sacrificed into the pit. Get permission, then stick your head in the pit room on the left side of the building for a glimpse of old school BBQ'ing. Still, the meat is no product that can't be experienced in most west TN counties. It's good, not extraordinary, BBQ. The pork butt is adequate, not elite. Skip the bologna, as it's in the bottom half of my experience. Sandwiches are served with an underwhelming mayo-based slaw that seems store bought. My strongest recommendation is to get the BBQ sauce on the side. The sauces at Sam's, both mild and hot, are so tangy that they overwhelm the meat, in my opinion. It's not my thing, but it might be yours. Both sauces should be on the table, so figure out your taste as you go.

Great place. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall from the outside, but clean inside. As soon as I walked in, the aroma of smoke and pork smacked me in the face. We ordered their 2lbs family pack, which came with a few sides and a pie. The pulled pork stood on its own and needed no sauce. They have quite a few selections of pies. We selected the chocolate chess pie, which was delicious. I will likely be back shortly to grab another on.

Appeared to be closed permanently. No signs up or times to open. It looked so good it was disappointing.

Food and service is awesome! They have cut back on when they are open though. That's the only disappointment I have.

We couldn't decide on food so we opted to split the two "sampling" options and were not disappointed. The stars were the cheese curds, pretzel bites, turkey and rib - wow! Everything else I had stacks up too! There are four styles of American BBQ. I would say they fall into these categories. Carolina's, Memphis, Texas, Kansas City. If there are others in your opinion, I don't care. That's all I believe in! My favorite by far is Texas. I love a good slathered in only salt and pepper, fatty side sliced, smoked for the perfect time, juicy brisket. My boy Blake has gotten it right! The setting is perfect, almost like the old mill was built for a different purpose that no one knew yet, so long ago. The decor, infused with days of the old, new interior additions, and the pictures of all of the pitmasters that have inspired him is so well done. We planned a drive from Memphis to Kentucky and went a specific route around having lunch here. I have been trying to get a visit since he was in the old trailer down the road. My only visit to Martin before, he was closed. Our server was like Southern Sweet Tea. Just dripping with sugary sweet goodness. She was a joy in my life for this great food moment! I should probably get to the food now I guess... I was here for the sampler platter. I knew that back in 2021! I didn't even need a menu. My kid is strange and got French Toast Sticks off of the Brunch Menu. I will say they looked great and came with a bad ass line up of dunking condiments. She ate almost all of it. She did also eat all of my sausage and Mac & Cheese too. C got the smoked chicken with Alabama White Sauce, added a sausage link, and had Brussel sprouts and deviled eggs with it. She fell in love with the white sauce at Big Bob Gibsons and seeks it out now. She loved it! She hates my BBQ quests most of the time but she even said we gotta come back here!! Win!! I got the sampler and loved all of it. ALL OF IT! Every bite was better than the last. It was all that I had hoped that it would be! It was like Texas, meets Memphis, and nothing could be better in my opinion. I loved his sauces, I loved his sides, I loved everything about this place! The only possible way that it could be better was if it were free. I cannot wait to return! '25 - 67/111
