Sam's is always a great choice when choosing a meet up spot for dinner from the west sider to meet up with the east sider! Comfort food was the goal for tonight! Check - liver and onions, rice pilaf and gravy, green beans and a tossed salad. One sorority sister had the all-you-can eat walleye/cod special and never ordered another serving. lol My other sorority sister had the half slab of ribs, fries and green beans. So we were in Royal Oak celebrating my birthday along with my new son in law that had never been to Detroit! Ferndale Grill was always my go to restaurant when I would come to the D and it was my dad's favorite place to bring me to before his passing last year. Where to begin when everything was fantastic?! What a hidden gem! Angie was a fabulous waitress! We had two kids in tow and she made sure they were well taken care of in all the best ways; from their delicious hot chocolates to their smiling pancakes. (Which were so cute!) Each and every one of us cleared our plates save for a bite or two. A sandwich, a Gyro, Mozzarella sticks and two pancakes were devoured. All of our food was hot and fresh! The salads here are great! Everything seems fresh, huge serving and solid toppings. Everything else on the menu is hit or miss. This is bulk cheap food from a restaurant supply joint that isn't even Gordon Food Service quality. Way below that and that's saying a lot. But the real 2 star experience is in the service. It's awful. They used to have great waitstaff. Fast, friendly but my last couple of visits it's been the same two women working and I think they share a brain cell. Dead eyes, no clue on the timing of food service, will take forever to get a drink. Your party will order beverages and they will bring over one at a time. Like nobody can carry two plastic cups of pop at once? It's just weird. One person will receive their soup and then all the mains will come out before anyone gets their dinner salad. We saw an add on email for this restaurant and thought we'd give it a try. Boy, we are glad we did. The food was tasty and the portions were above average. The menu has tons of choices to pick from. We had the meatloaf dinner and the hamburger steak dinner. Both came with mashed potatoes and a vegetable. We also had their soup. Everything met and exceeded our expectations. This place has been here forever. After church we came here for a late breakfast/early lunch. The wait time was only about 5 mins and then we were seated. Take notes....THIS is how an order of hashbrowns is supposed to look and my omelet was absolutely loaded... bacon, sausage, corned beef and ham with cheese and peppers of course. My friend has mentioned Sam's as a place for good food in Ferndale. When she and I were in the area, we came in for lunch. We had the fish and chips and a bowl of chili. My attempt to resolve the issue, was not good management denied that it was present, stating no one has "That Kind of Hair" when clearly the Dishwasher guy did. Stopped by Sam's for a carryout last night. It definitely won't be my last visit. I ordered delmonico steak and eggs with hash browns and Texas toast. Everything was pretty good. There were a few disappointments, but overall, it was good and a dish that I'd order again. I ordered the steak medium. It was tender and cooked at the correct temp. It was a nice size for the price paid. Under $20 for the meal. I was grateful for real toast as some restaurants barely toast bread. It was also packaged separately, which I appreciated. I asked for cheese on my eggs, which I didn't receive, but the eggs were good. Good customer service. My order was made quickly. I will dine-in next time. read more

I come here very often and it's a very nice spot. The restrooms are really clean, and the staff is so friendly. Once you've been there a few times there's a kind of family vibe since there are the regulars who frequent there often. I didn't even stay long enough to thoroughly wash my hands the way I like to. I informed staff that I would like to discuss it with a manager, only to be intercepted by a waitress. Whenever I get a breakfast sandwich anywhere I get it the same way it's never more then 10 bucks they changed me 6 dollars and change for the turkey sausage.
