One of the worst Gynos I've ever seen. He was rude, belittled me and made it very obvious he did not believe when I told him that I was in pain. Went to another doctor after seeing Van Kirk and they found endometriosis all over my peritoneum. If Van Kirk had spent more time listening to me and taking my health/pain seriously I would have received help and relief so much sooner. Do not go to this doctor. He does not take women's health seriously. I paid an insane amount of money for this man to make me worse than I already did. read more

I came to Dr. Van Kirk half way done with my high risk pregnancy so I didn't have him my entire pregnancy, the time I did have him he was amazing. I do have to say though the office ladies were pretty unwelcoming and rude which I didn't care as I'm more worried how my OB treats me. Van Kirk is super knowledgeable and caring. The staff here is great and friendly, but my appointment was at 11 and I was instructed to arrive early to complete paperwork, etc. which I did. After waiting the the lobby for over 45 minutes, I finally asked the front office staff when the Dr. Van Kirk would be seeing me, which they ensured would be shortly. I let them know I had a meeting that I needed to attend, so if he couldn't see me soon, I would need to reschedule. I was finally seen by Dr. Van Kirk a little after 12, over an hour after my scheduled appointment. Oh, and when I made this appointment I had to have it set over a month out. Now I have a bill from this office for my appointment, which my insurance should have covered. However, the billing office will not re-bill as my insurance company has requested, which would allow my insurance company to cover the bill instead of having to pay it out of pocket. read more

I saw Dr VanKirk over 11 years ago, and still feel traumatized. I literally feel some PTSD from my experience, and I'm a therapist who doesn't throw around such diagnoses lightly. I had an ultrasound to confirm a positive pregnancy test, and he bluntly & coldly told me & my husband that it looked like there "might" be 3 embryos (ack!), but he "wasn't sure if any of them were going to make it". I literally ran out of the office sobbing; to say the least, we were mortified and appalled at his demeanor. We rushed to another office that was so gracious to take us in THAT day; with better equipment and skill, they confirmed that there were TWO totally viable and precious little lives with heartbeats!!! I'll add that we are pro-life, pro-baby, (maybe he is??--but sure didn't seem like it), and were also disgusted that before we even did the ultrasound, he strongly recommended that IF I was indeed pregnant, we should get an amniocentesis to assess for any "genetic abnormalities"...WTHeck?! We told him we would HAVE and LOVE our baby(ies) no matter what, and would NEVER risk even the tiniest chance of potential harm to them (or an unnecessary, costly, invasive procedure!) The care we got at the NEXT office was in stark contrast: phenomenal, caring, and above all, sensitive & compassionate...and lastly, go figure, PRO-baby/life! Today we have vivacious, beautiful and healthy 11 y.o. twins, NO thanks to Dr Van Kirk (sooo tempted to write a J instead of the K, but that'd be childish...) read more

My wife and I's experience with Dr. Van Kirk's office was not good. Every time we had an appointment the Dr. was behind schedule. Not just a little behind, but a lot behind. We were on time (15 minutes early) for every appointment. We sat out in the lobby for between 45 minutes to over two hours (after our appointment time) every single time. After we finally get called back to a room, Dr. Van Kirk would rush through the exam and do a less than sufficient job in my opinion. We would have a sense that my wife, and our baby did not receive the care that we needed.The front lobby is typically packed, sometimes nowhere to sit. I felt like there was a lack of compassion as well towards my wife's needs. Dr. Van Kirk hands out this huge manual and requests you to read through it. My wife asked a question (a normal question any pregnant woman may ask an OB) and he just said "did you even read the manual?". My wife did read the manual but like any textbook it's not possible to remember 100% of what you read. That's why students in school get less than 100% on tests even though they've read the whole textbook. To me, it was an easy question for him to answer, my wife was being completely polite and the question was a good one. This is only one example of many that gave me a sense that this guy doesn't have much compassion. We ended up switching to a different OB half way through the pregnancy, and the difference is night and day. The new OB has short wait times in the lobby, very compassionate Dr. and the atmosphere of the office is relaxing. This Dr. takes her time and gives my wife a thorough examination, listens and answers questions and we are now prepared for the new addition to our family (my wife is due in a few days). The new OB's name is Dr Kang. She has been wonderful. Another thing Dr. Van Kirk's office was having us pay copay's for some reason and Dr. Kang's office does not charge a copay not sure why but it's great. I would not suggest to any of my friend's or family to go to Dr. Van Kirk for a pregnancy, or as an OB. read more

All of my visits were terrible. Multiple hours spent in the waiting room, for roughly 5-10 minutes of the DR's time per appointment. I had a rough pregnancy being 42, and the Dr. Just took everything nonchalantly saying " yes, that's normal". He did not deliver my baby at the hospital, but still sent me a bill. ( which is all good, someone had to be paid for the delivery ) My postpartum appointment was on the PHONE! No longer than 5 minutes. How exactly do you screen women for PPD? Or check to see that they have healed from a vaginal delivery? I then scheduled my annual exam so I could be screened for PPD & to make sure I healed properly ( which I have been having issues ) Nowhere was I told I may NOT bring my newborn to my appointment. So I arrive at my appointment with my baby where the front desk ladies look at each other uncomfortably & am asked to reschedule. Needless to say, I will not be rescheduling. All of my experiences with Dr. Van Kirk.. the Covid immunization pusher.. were unsettling. Ladies, do your research on picking a OB. read more

Dr Van Kirk is okay he is not really a good listener, as a Gyno nothing special as far as I'm concerned, but his front office is messed up they asked they me for two deposits on my surgery and when I canceled a week before the surgery they kept my deposit. Every time I talked to them that month they wanted a payments so the received four payments that month. They sent my lab work to another lab after asking where I wanted it sent, just to many issues for me. I've never been treated so bad in any Doctors office before, I was dealing with two possibly cancers and I was a nerves reck they didn't seem to give a damn. Oh don't sign up for their on line port it's a joke. I will say the the office and exam rooms are very clean. My feeling is they are more concerned about the money then their patients. They might be great with the Ob patients I wouldn't know. read more

Updating my review because I had a pregnancy since my last review. I love Dr. Van Kirk and his staff so it was easy to choose Dr. Van Kirk as my OBGYN for my pregnancy. The office is always clean and has a nice ambiance. My pregnancy was great, no complaints or issues. They gave me a really informative book at my first OB appointment for my pregnancy. If you get this book, I recommend you read the whole thing. You'll honestly never have to bug Dr. Van Kirk and his staff outside of your appointments because the book answers so many of your questions. I was a little bummed that Dr. Van Kirk didn't deliver my baby since my husband and I were so comfortable with him but I went into labor in the middle of the night so understandably, he was not working at that time. My friend also had her cervix removed by Dr. Van Kirk and said that she doesn't think anyone could have possibly done a better job. I have always heard great things about this office and I will continue coming to Dr. Van Kirk for any future OBGYN needs. read more

As far as OB care, I cannot give a review. However, Dr. Van Kirk delivered my first baby via C-Section after my doctor had gone home for the day. I was extremely anxious as I am a first time momma and went from being in labor for 20 hours to having to have a C Section pretty fast. He sat and answered every single one of my questions without annoyance (I had a lot of questions). He then proceeded to talk me through the procedure and so did his assistant. I couldn't think of a better experience for the situation I was given. Also, my incision healed beautifully and I had no complications. Everyone I had talked to said that Dr. Van Kirk is the absolute BEST to have if you're getting a c-section. read more

I have loved my experience with Van Kirk. I needed to find an OB because I found out I had an ovarian cyst that needed to be taken out. Van Kirks office fit me in last minute and took care of me. The office is beautiful and everything is clean and new. Updated systems, you fill out all your info on iPads. They scheduled me for surgery in a timely matter and got me in and out. I had my surgery a couple days ago and now I am recovering nicely. I would definitely recommend him. Very professional, pleasant and knows what he is doing. read more

I feel so relieved to have found good medical care here in Redding! I delivered my sweet baby girl with a different doctor 3 months ago and haven't felt like I healed properly. After months of feeling like I was just a lost cause, I canceled my appointments at my old office and went searching for a doctor that could actually help me. I came to VanKirk's office completely bewildered, and almost hopeless. I full on started crying when explaining my medical concerns to the nurse. She reassured me and said , "you're in good hands now. We will take care of you." She was right! Vankirk listened to me and he was able to immediately identify that I had a complication with my stitches from where I tore when delivering my baby. He treated me on the spot and scheduled a follow up to make sure that it was enough to do the trick. I still can't believe I spent THREE months in pain, TWO rounds of antibiotics (and all the complications that caused for me and my nursing baby) when the solution was so simple! I've had excellent care from Dr. Van Kirk! He was very sympathetic during a loss; I could feel his empathy which actually helps a lot during hard times. Every OB appointment he always made sure if I had any questions they were answered in detail, regardless of how busy the office was. I've seen some reviews about him running late, but that's the nature of the practice! It only happened once during my pregnancy that he was running late due to a birth that morning. His office is very friendly and attentive and make sure to get you in and out as fast as possible. Also, he is the best in town for a c-section. I will stay for gyn care, and if I ever have more babies this is the only place I will be going! read more

I was horrified. The only thing going for him is that his staff are kind. When I went in for my appointment, after being referred by my PCP, I was met with a disbelieving and condescending man who could have cared less what I had to say. I went in looking for help discovering the reason for pain I had been experiencing and Dr. Van Kirk told me that I didn't appear to be in that much pain, and if I WAS in pain then I would not have been able to tolerate his exam (which was excruciating.) He spent the remainder of the ten minutes I saw him trying to sell me on Mirena which I had to tell him three times I was not interested in. It was a joke. The second I mentioned "chronic pain" he checked out. I don't know if he was expecting me to ask for medication (which I didn't) or what, but there is no excuse to treat a patient that way. I've been paying off that waste of a pelvic exam for 6 months. Don't make the same mistake I did, go somewhere else. read more

Best doctor ever!!!! From the first time I met him, ge was great!! I've had complicated pregnancies and he made me feel completely at ease. He answered all of my questions, never rushed. Even if I had a quick question, I could call and get an answer. His humor and bedside manner is great. I received prompt care provided by Caring staff that allowed me to ask my questions without fear or concern of feeling stupid.The follow-up care that I required was recieved in a timely manner by the staff that worked very hard to arrange for appointments for tests and necessary treatments for my cancer. Dr. VanKirk and his staff has been in my life for over 7 years. I lost a couple sweet babies, 6 months pregnant and couldn't figure out why. I had other Drs during the losses who treated it like it was no biggie...I buried those babies, and part of me felt like it died with them...I was depressed and lost. Then I came to his office and he LISTENED and found us answers. Now fast forward to today I have 3 beautiful, healthy children, all of whom he delivered. I owe Dr VanKirk everything. His care, attention, efficiency, kindness, jokes and understanding gave me a family. I'm eternally grateful. I wish I could give more than 5 stars!! read more

Fantastic doctor. I had had a terrible experience with a female GYN in Redding -- the worst medical practitioner experience of my life. Went to Dr. Van Kirk for a second opinion because I couldn't stand the thought of that woman doing anything to me. Van Kirk was positively stellar. He was exceptionally kind, patient, answered all of my questions, performed an uncomfortable procedure as best it could be done, all the while helping to calm my fears and worries (that the OTHER doctor had created by dropping the words "cancer" and "hysterectomy" on me in the worst way...). Turns out I don't have cancer, don't need a hysterectomy, and there was absolutely no reason for the other doctor to have said the things she said (in an ice-cold manner and without bothering to answer any of my questions). I only wish Dr. Van Kirk was a GP, as I would love to be able to have him as my regular doctor! If I could give him ten stars, I would. read more

Switched from another Dr. here in Redding and had been told some concerning and contradicting info about my baby. After stressing about it days afterwards, I was recommend two other Dr.'s in the area, one of them being Van Kirk. I'm so glad I switched. Upon arrival, office staff was beyond friendly and helpful. After a short wait, I was greeted by such a kind nurse who took my vitals. After explaining my situation with the other office I had been to, she assured me I really was in the best hands with Van Kirk if an issue arose. I couldn't agree more! The doctor came in shortly after and I explained to him the situation and how concerned I was of this 'supposed' issue I had. He did an ultrasound and immediately told me he saw no cause for concern that baby was measuring right on track and everything looked phenomenal. Such a relief! I also appreciated the fact, he explained to me what was going on through out the process and assured me I'd be seeing him at my prenatal visits vs. PA's, unless an emergency issue arose that he had to attend to. I feel so much relief and I'm actually enjoying my pregnancy knowing their are no complications with my pregnancy. To add, his office staff is so caring and kind, and I really haven't had to wait long. read more

I've seen Dr. Van Kirk for about 4 years and through two pregnancies. Dr Van Kirk is a very talented OB/GYN. His bedside manner is relaxed and humorous. In my second pregnancy, I showed up feeling a bit anxious for my 36 week check up. I told his assistant, Trina (who is also awesome and so friendly/supportive) that something didn't feel right and I had felt a weird movement and then less movement since a couple of days ago. They didn't blow me off. They gave me an unscheduled ultrasound immediately and we learned that my previously head down baby had flipped to breech. Van Kirk gave me the option to do an External Celiac Version where they flip the baby from the outside. It was pretty daunting but after a little research I told myself to trust Dr. Van Kirk and go for it (like most women, I wanted to avoid a C Section.) When he came to the hospital for the procedure he had a completely different demeanor than his office bedside manner. He had his game face on and he meant business. (Not that he was unfriendly in any way but it was interesting for my husband and I to see him with a different demeanor because he's so relaxed and casual in his office.) He covered all his bases, checking the baby's position and decided which way he wanted to rotate, the staff assisted him with ultrasounds and literally there was a nurse there to wipe the sweat off his face and he gently and firmly convinced my baby girl to flip back where she needed to be. ECVs aren't known for having a high success rate (only about 70% IF you are on your second pregnancy) and it was my impression speaking to him and the hospital staff that he has one of the highest success rates for our area. Personally, I was impressed. I also have a friend who sees him and he found a CCAM (mass on the lung) of her baby during her 20 week check up. At 8 months along she was being checked at Stanford and the drs there told her that they were impressed VK found it as early as he did because even though they are specialized and know what they're looking for, they even have trouble seeing it. I cannot say enough about how TERRIBLE my experience with Van Kirk was. My husband and I were trying for about a year and a half to get pregnant. Since we were new to the area, I went to Van Kirk (by recommendation) for my annual, and to learn more information about what steps we could take regarding fertility/pregnancy. The exam went smoothly, and I have no issues with his bedside manner DURING the exam. Afterward however, is a completely different story. Van Kirk was absolutely rude on too many levels to voice, made me feel like a small, ignorant child and inferior person, and offered ZERO advice/recommendations/guidance on how or where to proceed. He was absolutely unprofessional, and I have never been treated or spoken to with such disrespect. I left 3 messages for his office to find out about my test results, and did not receive a call back for any of them. On the 4th call (4 weeks after the tests were conducted), I finally reached Misty at the front desk. She told me the doctor had (FINALLY) reviewed my test results, and that I should contact the Northern California Fertility Clinic... and that was coming from the receptionist! The doctor apparently could not be bothered to discuss the test results, or the options with me. I have never been more frustrated or disappointed then I was with my experience with Van Kirk. On a side note, I immediately switched to a different doctor in the area, and was treated with respect and professionalism. I am now 13 weeks along and my biggest concern is that Van Kirk might be the on call doctor when I give birth.... I cannot imagine facing him again and/or having him any where near me during such an intimate time, or having him be the first to handle my baby. The thought truly appalls me. If you are a client, or a potential client of his, "good luck" and I hope your experience turns out better then mine. read more

I have seen Dr. Vankirk for 10 years now. He took me on as a patient when I moved here from another state late in my first pregnancy. I had already seen 3 other OB/GYNs and was so discouraged because I did not like any of them. When Dr. Vankirk, who was on call at the time, walked into my hospital room when I was having issues, I knew he was the doctor for me. Since then, he has been my doctor through all three of my pregnancies and delivered all three of my kids. He has also diagnosed and fixed a few issues I have had over the years. Dr. Vankirk has always made me feel comfortable and welcomed. His enthusiasm and compassion during childbirth was always such a breath of fresh air. Even my husband loves him, and my husband is normally a pretty harsh critic when it comes to people who take care of his family. read more

I had a great experience with Dr. Van Kirk with my twin pregnancy, however the experience I've had since has been far from stellar. During what should have been a routine IUD removal he continued to pull on it when it was obviously imbedded. He managed to pull it out and broke a piece off inside of me. His response was to do an ultrasound a week later which showed nothing. I then had a CT scan which also showed nothing. His treatment suggestions were exploratory surgery, tubal ligation with ablation (I'm only 31), or to just see what happens. Meanwhile a bill rolls in for the ultrasound that he did. When I contacted his office stating that I didn't feel liable for the charge as it was a result of his negligence, I was told that because I agreed to the ultrasound that I am responsible. Umm....who wouldn't want to try and find a foreign object that was broken off inside you? I am appalled at the way he and his staff have handled this situation. Needless to say effective today he's fired from being my OB/GYN. read more

I first met Dr. VanKirk when I was having an unwanted, scheduled c section that my former doctor mandated I have against my desires. As much as I did not want to be there, Dr. VanKirk was phenomenal. He was respectful, informative, and willing to answer my questions. The c section was quick and expertly performed, especially as I am very large and that can make the surgery more difficult. The scar healed beautifully. I've had no lasting complications outside of some numbness. I'm so grateful that he happened to have an opening to perform my surgery! After this I decided to switch to him for my obgyn care. His well woman exam and pap were the quickest and most painless I've ever experienced (I say this as someone with a lot.of anxiety surrounding these exams). He offered ample time for questions and, again, was very thorough with his informed answers. His office is lovely and his staff were very kind as well. I'd recommend him to anyone. I'm sad that VBAC is not an option but if I get pregnant again I fully trust Dr. VanKirk to oversee the care and wish I had gone to him through my first pregnancy. read more

Horrible Experience!!! Dr. Kirks Office Manager, Misty, made me feel as though I was not worthy/accepted to be seen by their establishment. I had a 2nd term miscarriage last fall and then moved here to Redding from out of state. Because of my previous situation, when I found out I was pregnant this spring, I was very nervous (which I feel any woman that had experienced this would). I began researching many different OB/GYN in the area, and was most impress with Dr. Samuel Van Kirk's reputation and educational background. I was completely distraught by the attitude and treatment I received from the office manager from the very first phone call. As I explained my background to her on the phone, she repeatedly interrupted me to ask in a demeanor tone "do you even have insurance before I continue this conversation"... I answered her and told her my providers name, and then I asked about an ultrasound and before I could finish my sentence, she interrupted me again stating " our office policy is to give an ultrasound between 10-13 weeks". She then notified me that she would forward the "office policies" to me about how they do things. By this point, I was utterly upset and in tears. I have lost one pregnancy, now I'm nervous about a second, I feel as if I should already know this information by they way I was spoken to, and now I am being treated like number XXX on an assembly line. Since when is every pregnancy the same as another? What about being a compassionate facility and at least trying to help an individual feel as if everything is going to be okay? This facility never once made me feel comfortable or my unborn child/I even mattered to them. They made me feel as if their attitude is "there will be another pregnant lady right behind you", so they never cared if I was their patient nor would they take any personal interest in me or my circumstances. For any First-time mothers or woman prone to miscarriages, I would never recommend this faculty or office to you. Best of luck, may yours be better than my first experience read more
