I had lunch at Samurai Sushi and it was a great experience all around. The sushi rolls and sashimi were fresh and fantastic, exactly what you hope for when you sit down for a good sushi lunch. You can tell the quality is there, and the pricing feels very fair for what you're getting. Service was just as impressive. The staff was attentive, and the owner really stood out -- very welcoming, engaged, and clearly cares about the experience. My wife and I visited Samurai Sushi for the first time and were greatly impressed. The restaurant location is fairly nondescript, and the interior is a little worn, but oh man is the food delicious. We ordered a salmon plate, a sushi item plus several baked rolls. Everything was fresh and extremely tasty. Add in some beer and everything came in under $60. We are new to the Central Coast area and this is definitely the best sushi we have tasted yet around here. The service was excellent from the owners, a very friendly couple who took every care to make sure we were happy. We'll be going back soon. This used to be one of my favorite sushi places in town but the place seems to have gone downhill. Stopped to pick up some sushi and, first thing I noticed was that all the prices on the menu had been blackened out. When I questioned the owner about this, he said that because costs keep going up they can't keep their menu prices current?? I paid for the food and felt it was a bit high for what we ordered. When I got home, my wife and I noticed that the portions of the sushi roll and mixed tempura were much smaller than in the past and the food did not seem fresh. Such a disappointment. This place used to be so good. I know the Covid situation messed up a lot of businesses, but is that a reason to rip people off. My husband went in to get an order to go. They had marked out all the prices from the menu and when my husband asked why the owner started telling him that he was putting his kids through college and paying their bills. We ordered a mixed tempura. The tempura was limp and the veggies were cut small and the shrimp was tiny. My California roll was meh and the spider roll my husband had was not good. So we have been there several times. The food has been consistently good. We enjoy the current sushi chef they have. He turns out quality food. We got 5 different rolls. All were good. The reason for the 3 stars is our blonde waitress. The service was bad. We sat down she took our order, gave us our rolls when they were ready then we never heard back from her. We never got a " is everything okay?" nor did we get "do you want more water or beer?" nor "do you want anything else?". Nothing but here's the check. What if we wanted something else? The other night my friends and I had not eaten and I am sorry but having all lived in LA and now in Paso, we KNOW that there is not much to choose from here after 9PM besides Dennys and maybe one or two other places. Funny, I have actually been going there for years and realized that I have never reviewed it. We showed up a little before 9PM (they close at 9:30 PM on Saturdays) and we were greeted by the owner. She acted so happy to see us as well as several of her Sushi guys behind the counter.There were 3 of us and she even brought us 3 different bills. (Which was nice because I probably would have paide for all but it took away that whole feeling obliged thing... Anywaaay... even at closing they didn't miss a beat. Everything was as fresh as if it were the opening hour! I had my regular, the rainbow roll, you get actual sushi on each piece and it is one of the lower calorie rolls. One of my friends had the crunchy roll and the other had the Volcano or something with scallops and salmon drizzled with a sauce that looked NOT on my diet at that time of night! But everyone ate every last bit of theirs. I thought that we would all take home half but.... smile. I have never gotten poor service or anything other than the best sushi ever. Hands down, they are as good as any in West Hollywood or LA that charge twice as much for the exact same thing! Granted you are not overlooking the city lights and the ambience is not five star. I wasn't planning on coming here. I was at a 1st birthday party two doors down at a pizza place. As we were leaving the party I see a sign... "$1 sake" Now how can you say no to that. lol Four of us go in and ask if we can just order the sake (yeah i know we sound like cheap alcoholics). The waitress comes in with 2 fairly large sizes of sake. Oh oh...looks like we're gonna need to order more beer and do a couple more sake bombs. As we're drinking we see another sign on the wall by our table. "Tony's Special - 'Baked' Shhhh...It's a secret.'" Sounds intriguing. BF goes to the bar to ask what's in the Tony's special. Chef says, "I have no clue, I'm not Tony. But it's good." He calls out Tony from the kitchen and we figure why not, let's try it out. Tony gets to work on his concoction and the owner comes out asking us if we ordered the Tony special. He then goes on saying that Tony's crazy. Then he says we're doing our sake bombs wrong 'cause we didn't use the chopsticks to balance the sake over the beer. It's only 3pm and he wants us to cause a ruckus in his restaurant. I think HE's the crazy one. We get our Crazy Tony Special (OMG sooo good, a massive roll of something like a baked california roll with salmon, grilled onions, lemon slices and 2 types of sauce), we do one more sake bomb the "right way" with us banging the table and the owner cheering us on, and we get a bday cupcake on the house. For those who know me I NEVER EVER give 5 stars on just one visit.. But here I am and here it is!! The staff is super friendly and very helpful. I ended up trying the Spider, Double Double and the Kiss of Fire! The double double might just be my most favorite thing ever!! I wish I had more to say, but here comes another delicious roll! I go about once a week and the husband and wife that own the shop are always so nice and accommodating. You go in door and the glass is so dirty, you are left thinking if they don't clean the first thing you see what does the back look like. But went in and tables clean so we sat down. Then came menus. Menus so dirty we had to wash our hands after using. Ordered lunch special which included Crunch Roll and Cali Roll. Just sort of thrown in a jumbled mess on plate. It looked so bad it was hard to eat it. Ordered Hot Roll or something. Roll not rolled tight and fell apart while eating. Another big mess on our plates. The great thing was the ice cold beer. I want start off by saying the only reason why I'm giving this review a one star is because A) it's forcing me to & B) the young guy that helped me was VERY nice. I left moments ago and left on a bad note. There was bugs on my plate! Yes BUGS. Not little ants but big bugs! When I told the Asian lady she took the plate from my hands and wiped it off and have it back to me!! (Excepting me to continue eating it!) I gave it back and said I'm not eating this. She made me whisper and she walked away. I got up and noticed more all over the counter, she came back and started taking them off with her fingers! At this point, I've had enough.. I walked to the front and she asks me "how would you like to pay..." I was shocked! She was going to act like this NEVER happened.
