i moved...AGAIN....last week. two blocks away. you might think all my crap could fit in one car by now and i could lift it all with my pinkys... but sadly that is not the case. in the past i hired a mover which resulted in a bad experience (yes, you can find a yelp review on that one). other times i just got a couple of guys from the corner of divis and oak in front of the paint store which is great, but can be a little intimidating when you drive up and 10 of them are fighting for the job trying to get in your car. so this time, just to be different, a friend tipped me off to the day labor program and i figured i would give it a go. i called in the morning and they sent me a guy within a couple of hours! the rate is $15 per hour, or minimum $50. some guys even come with their own pick-up truck (for my future reference i could have skipped renting the zipcar). you pay them cash when the job is done. all in all i was happy, the job got done in under 2 hours....BUT to be honest i was a bit worried about the guy. he was older and not in the best shape to be moving heavy things up and down all those stairs. i made more trips than he did....which was fine. but he was out of breath often and i certainly would not be able to live with myself had he fallen over with a heart attack due to moving a bunch of my crap. my advice: be very specific when you call to say you are moving (which i thought i was, but i guess be even more specific) and let them know you need guys who will be lifting heavy things up and down flights of stairs. read more

I requested 3 helpers to unload a 16 foot moving truck via their online request form. 3 very polite men showed up on the dot and proceeded to unload the truck in about 2 hours! They were very speedy & careful with the couches and breakables. I treated them to a taco lunch. I will definitely call the Labor Center again. read more

I phoned S.F. Day Labor to request two strong men. I explained that I had some furniture and some rugs to be moved within my house. I had a leather sofa in the garage that had to be moved to the second story, an armoire to be moved from the second story to the garage etc. I asked that the men come at 1:00 pm. On the appointed day, both men arrived on time and got to work immediately. They not only moved everything as requested but they were so careful of every piece and also the correct placement of the rugs and under padding. They were both wonderful. I was so pleased with the job and the way S.F. Day Labor sets up each appointment. They phone you the day before to confirm the appointment and give you the name of the men who will be arriving at your home. I recommend .S.F Day Labor and will definitely use them again. read more

Not a problem with the older gentlemen they sent for Heavy Labor job, they tried, but with the org for not sending younger guys. Specifically told Sophia that works in the office and over email that we were moving very heavy furniture up multiple flights of stairs and then they sent movers older than my parents. The guys where breathing very heavily and despite trying to accommodate them and give them frequent breaks and water where clearly in pain. Often dropped the furniture at the top of the stairs causing a serious dent in our floors and scratching the furniture. A good concept but NOT well organized. read more

Very well run organization that makes it easy to hire great local talent. I used it dozens of times for everything from moving, lawn work to basic labor for a home repairs. The more detail you can give the dispatcher about the project, the more effective they'll be in selecting workers to match your needs. If you can't pick up the workers you can send a taxi/Uber/Lyft to ferry the workers to wherever you need them. read more

This program is totally necessary; in the future I would totally use this over any less organized like Craigslist labor stuff. I had the pleasure of hiring a few folks on behalf of an employer. The crew was punctual, task-oriented, and professional. Work we had for them was yard work... Of particular note: the guy that showed up with the truck was totally on the ball, brought a younger guy to help, had exchanged cell numbers and showed up earlier than originally scheduled, went above board to make sure the job was done in one trip, and had business cards on hand. read more

We moved out of our condo and needed someone to do a deep cleaning. Luckily, Norma was assigned to be our cleaner. I asked her to show up at 0730 so that I could go to work and she was at my door-step by 0715. I walked with her throughout the condo, gave her some quick instructions, paid her cash for five hours of work and left. I returned to the condo after work and inspected the condo. The place was cleaner than when we moved in. One minor issue - I asked her to clean the fridge, and the fridge did appear to be clean, but the drawers were still dirty. Next time, I would specify that she also clean the inside of the refrigerator drawers. I would definitely ask for Norma again. read more

Totally a steal of a deal. They might not be hustling their pants off. But for the price difference you get much more for your money. I feel bad only paying them $50 for 3 hours of heavy labor. Very happy with my experience with the day laborers. They negotiated a special rate when I did not need them for the minimum time. The supervisor is courteous and follows up to be sure that the job is done well. I have had people in work for as cleaners, day laborers, house keepers, and movers and have not been disappointed yet. Often the dispatcher asks me if I need an English translator. My Spanish is far from perfect, but I have noted that a little effort goes a long way (as it does anywhere in the world). I recommend SF Day Labor - as with any job, be clear about your expectations and yu won't be disappointed. read more

I had a great experience with this affordable service. Juan showed up on time to do some gardening for me that required someone stronger than I. He was courteous and hard working. It took him a lot less time than I expected so I paid him for the hours I thought it would have taken. One needs to keep in mind that the workers are only semi skilled so if you want an expert, you'll need to pay for one. read more

We hired a couple guys for 3 hours to help us move upstairs in our apartment building. Most of our stuff was packed, and the remaining stuff we figured we could pack while they were moving the already packed stuff. Well, they were SO fast that we could almost not keep up with them! They worked well together, they were super friendly, and they had our apartment moved in 1.5 hours!! I didn't AT ALL mind paying them for the 3 hours of work - bonus for them! We have some heavy and delicate items (including a bookcase with antique glass doors), and nothing had a scratch after moving. I can't not say enough good things about these guys. Also, when the big stuff was moved, they started moving things like our plants without being asked - I'm not sure why I found that so endearing, but I did. Anyway, I will definitely be calling this program again - great experience and an unbeatable price. read more

I've used this service for several different things. 1 was to reorganize my closet and the lady did a great cheap job. The second was for housecleaning which was just all right but again cheap. The third was fixing ceiling cracks, electrical, plumbing and lighting fixtures. This was done by a guy named Louis. It was a great job but more expensive. Louis also did some plumbing (setting up a shower in a claw foot tub). He did a fantastic job on that one and reasonably priced for that job. I use the service as much as I can for general fixit stuff. This is a great place when you have odd jobs around the house and don't know where else to go. read more

I have to say I absolutely wanted to support this program. I feel it's the right thing to do. So I give the agency 3 stars and my worker 1. I had a worker who was given very specific list of handy man jobs to do - including moving furniture one flight of stairs into a storage unit../ it's a long story but the fellow basically conned me into not paying him to move the furniture another day with the 'right tools' - he never came back - and now I am stuck with heavy furniture I have to move myself. I contacted the agency, no reply. I contacted the fellow - he says he is in the hospital... I know I shouldn't complain because yes accidents happen but he never called me to let me know - I had to hound him and now I am stuck with a pile of furniture that needs to be moved. He did do the other job of painting (which the other fellow was wayyyy more efficient - this guy was older (Alberto c. With last digits of his ten 3566, and def not up for this job)... He shouldn't have been able to take the job if he could not do the job needed... the other fellow- Javier- was amazing!!! And I hired him to do another job. I received a flyer for sfdaylabor.org, an organization of laborers advertized as fast, affordable and reliable for moving, yardwor, home improvement and more. I needed some furniture moved to our garage that we were getting rid of, and called sfdaylabor to set up an appointment for two movers to do the job. I was very impressed with the workers that were sent! They were on time, polite, worked fast and carefully in moving the furniture down a flight of stairs. After they finished moving everything, they noticed my wife trimming an overgrown lilac and asked if she needed help. We were planning on hiring someone to remove it, however, our guys took it out, cut it into small pieces and bagged it for us for compost, at no extra charge since there was still time on the clock from the original job. I would not hesitate to use them again for future projects! read more

I want day laborers to be treated properly -- they are so skilled and so great! I hired 2 workers from the Day Laborer Program. One, I had to monitor hour by hour, but he did earn the wage for the work I gave him. The other person, Sr. Flores, was very capable, entrepreneurial, and a joy to work with. He even was proactive enough to bring his own, personal tools on the second day. I now feel that any of his recommendations (now for help for movers) is totally credible. I hired Julio Loyola to paint a bedroom. He did an excellent job. He was detailed-oriented, thorough, professional, and trustworthy. I sensed that he really cared about the finished product and not just getting paid. I recommended him to my mother who needed mold cleaned from her home. She highly praised his work and how careful he was with her potted plants (and she is picky about how people do things in her house). When she needed someone to do some regular house cleaning, I offered to call the women's collective for her, but she only wanted Julio to come back. I needed help moving a heavy table down a flight of stairs and stumbled upon the website. I called the day before and was matched up with Joaquin Gutierrez. He was 67 and I was a bit apprehensive since it was a heavy job, but Joaquin was great and the person I bought the table from asked for his contact number she was so impressed (turns out we had to bring it down a spiral staircase). Definitely Do NOT trust these guys with a move. They did not want to work, quit half way through and demand full pay. Mostly everything was ruined- my mac book- the box was left in the rain, tossed and dropped, electronics left in rain, antique pieces that i have acquired (through luck) were trashed. Ufa (name?) is the worst. Swindler and a hustler. I was happy to see a big strong guy until he looked at my small amount of one bedroom items and said it would take all day and i would need to pay more. Keep in mind i moved most of the stuff onto the Uhaul myself bc they were taking so long. Audraina was sympathetic but encourages the behavior by telling you to pay them in full because they were scared of a staircase (of which i had fully notified) Audraina offered me a discount on "other services" that must have been a joke- as if i will trust them again? She did send me two more men-after Ufa and Jose quit bc they were afraid of a staircase. Ernesto was great. yes my bill started over and i had to pay them for four hours too. Granted it is not expensive prices but with a uhaul and all the other expenses of moving, it quickly adds up. Life in this city is expensive enough and so is moving- if you can't afford 1800 on insured movers like me definitely do NOT call these people. Your best bet is to go to UHAUL and hire men who want to work- I had a great experience with a move 6 months ago with a wonderful man Luis whom no longer lives here. He was great, honest, hard working and a blessing, I assumed SF Day Labor program would do some kind of screening but i was sadly mistaken. read more

What a great idea. Why hasn't this expanded to every big city in the USA? After I finally had enough of the San Fran rents, I rented a place in the East Bay. I called and the friendly person on the phone helped me arrange two guys to help me move on a Saturday. Two gentlemen arrived right on time at 7:00 Saturday morning. They had paperwork and IDs so even single women can use the service with confidence. They spoke almost no English, but that's ok - my Spanish is passable and I told the lady on the phone that English was not a requirement. Anyway, these guys kicked ass! I was pretty much prepared, everything was boxed up, just needed help loading the boxes and furniture onto the truck, and taking apart the bed and loading it. I helped with the first couple loads of boxes, but I realized I was just in the way, and stepped aside and let them go. They were like two ants - carrying 3x their weight! They got the truck loaded in under an hour, drove with me over the bridge and unloaded me in the new place in no time. While they were unloading I ran and got us a bag of burgers. Loaded them back in the truck and took them home - 4 hours total and all moved by 11:00. Fantastic work at a great price and not having to ask friends for help was well worth it. I'm not one for writing a yelp review, but my experience with SFDLP was so positive, that it is worth helping the cause. Past Yelpers mentioned that it would be helpful to be specific when calling their office to describe the job requirements. I was moving a two bedroom apartment in a 26-foot truck that needed be packed with care -- not just slammed in there. I got two of the most kick-ass movers that made the whole experience almost pain-free. These guys spent the whole day in high-gear helping out where ever help was needed. When we rolled by the paint store on Divs and Oak with all of the laborers outside waiting, we talk about how this program offers them a safe place to get work. read more

It makes me sad to write this review because I really, REALLY wanted to have a good experience. For so many reasons this is an awesome program and I'd encourage folks to continue to support it, but my experience just wasn't great. We hired a couple of guys to help us with our move. They arrived on time and all seemed to get off to a smooth start. It soon became apparent, however, that one of the guys just wasn't pulling his weight and was forcing the other to do the (literally) heavy lifting, which understandably wore him out to the point that he started moving really slowly halfway through. They also got into constant arguments about how to pack things, how to get things around corners, etc., and as a result our move was way behind schedule. We actually had to call some of our friends to help out. Most annoying, however, was the fact that the not-as-hard-working guy simply wasn't careful and gouged our otherwise-pristine walls in a number of places. Luckily our landlord didn't charge us for it but I was concerned it would end up costing us a ton. I felt awful for the other guy, who did a great job. In retrospect I wish I'd paid more and hired some real movers. read more

This program helps so many people on all different levels. I know that the people who use this program really want to work and like me need help. I was moving, I don't make a lot of money and wanted to find a way to spend my money usefully - not on some large moving company who treats their workers poorly. A friend recommended this program and the guys who showed up were so awesome, they worked really hard. I have moved a lot in the past 5 years and these guys really kicked ass and I feel good about where my money went . To me it was a win-win situation! Use this program, you won't regret it! They will work in your yard, paint, do construction or anything else you might need. Some of them have very particular skills and can't get jobs here for one reason or another but can do the job. One of guys I hired worked on housing foundations in Honduras. Just ask at the SFDLP and they'll find someone for you! No job too big or too small. read more
