Very cute general store with large variety of snacks, homegoods, candles, books, clothing, and souvenirs! Unfortunately, they have a limited coffee menu. they do have pastries and toasts. Another detour coming home. A great find off the Cabrillo HW! The San Gregorio General Store- An awesome historic old west general store , classic country bar, that sells picnic fare, clothes, books, gifts, curiosities AND live music friday-sunday. Only one mile from San Gregorio State Beach going up towards the mountains. I honestly could spend lots of time here. Had some live folk music playin' while enjoying one of the best Blood Mary's I've ever had made the way they're supposed to be made. No mix, made with just delicious ingredients by a friendly bartender. Took some bread pudding home for my parents and would definitely return. Something about General Stores having scrumptious pastries, a one room library with a bad ass ceiling, various curiosities for sale, live music, full bar, and friendly locals and tourists. I ride with one of the local cycling clubs and we regularly come over the hill and down 84. We love stopping at the San Gregorio General Store, to get coffee and a scone and relax for a few minutes before heading out. The place is super friendly and welcoming. It's such a contrast to the similar store in La Honda, one of the least friendly places ever. In contrast, we bought coffee and pastries this morning at the SG General Store, and hung out for the minutes outside chatting with a car club that was doing the same. Any time I am in the area, whether on a bike or by car, I try to stop off here. They know how to run a store that treats customers well, the pastries are really good, and the coffee is strong. Very cute little store. We always stop here on the way to the beach! Friendly staff, good vibe.

They have an interesting selection of items for sale in this general store, which sells food, books, clothing, kitchenware, toys and also has a full bar. There's also a post office. They have live music on the weekends. I had a great time looking around and came away with some nice gifts and a teacup and saucer for myself. On a weekday afternoon it wasn't too crowded during my visit. The bathrooms are clean and spacious. Parking is available out front and across the street. This is a nice spot to stop in for a rest, to have a drink and perhaps something to eat. While it's fairly close to Half Moon Bay this seems to be a store for locals and tourist alike. read more

My brother brought us here to check it out. Great historic building with wood floors and tons of great products. Lots of local artists sell their wares here, other items are brought in and coordinate with the "feel" of this store. I loved the little book nook and all the amazing pottery. I ended up purchasing a couple of sun hats. My Dad also bought a sun hat. My brother bought a beer to drink while we shopped around the store. The ceilings are so high and they have lots of items displayed on the tall part of the walls. There is a piano that people can sit down and play, which my brother did. There is a little bit of something for everyone here. I wasn't too impressed with the "register" people, didn't seem to know much about the products that are carried. I asked about two different specific things and only got the response that what is out there is what we have. While probably true, that is kind of a blasee answer. There were several people milling around behind the "bar" and I couldn't tell who was working there or not. This is definitely a hangout for locals, especially the bicyclists who stop in for a cool drink or a snack while out riding their bikes on the local trails. The locals who were in there definitely got paid more attention than we did. My brother and a friend went back the next day because there was some live music playing. He had fun for his birthday and that is what counts!! I would definitely come back here, especially if there was something artistic I was searching for. I should have taken a video as I walked around the store so I would know what they have for future visits. Next time I will ask what is under the trap door and what the story is with the dead fish on the fenceposts across the street where you have to park!! read more

We just love this place but haven't been here in several years. A lovely historic building to sit, sip and listen to local music. The vibe is relaxed and chill. I'm not sure what to say about an atmospheric emporium that combines a bar, a bookstore, and a variety store in a building that feels like the middle of nowhere. It's actually on Stage Road, which winds its way to another isolated hamlet, Pescadero. About a half-hour south of Half Moon Bay, the store is just a few minutes off Hwy 1 on Hwy 84, a two-lane blacktop which eventually leads you to La Honda and then Woodside where you finally see civilization in the form of 280. Like I said, the middle of nowhere. Apparently it attracts crowds on weekends when the laid-back place hosts live music from local bands. However, I was here early on a random Saturday morning when it was mainly just me perusing the wide array of comfort apparel and vintage housewares sold here. Really a gem of store that has seen some nice improvements. Unfortunately it has been overrun with tobacco smoke that is inescapable on the patios, inside the store and in front of the post office. We have tried 3 separate times in the last 3 months and each time we have been inundated with a profuse amount of cigarette smoke. San Gregorio Store: Please post some no smoking signs, if needed designate some place away from the patio and doors where smokers can partake without affecting the other patrons and will gladly change the review and rating. Still a great place. I have been going to the San Gregorio General Store for nearly as long as I have been alive, and it's still a staple and a treat for locals and now cyclists and tourists. Live music still happens Friday nights and Saturday and Sundays, with a new outdoor stage and patio added. While it's no longer a speakeasy gambling spot/whatever and there's no need for a gun behind the bar anymore, it's still a wonderful blast from the past. The post office is in the building as it has been since the area was settled. The full bar is mostly as it has been for 100 years (longer on the site - the original building burned down). But the really raucous days have passed for the moment - the owners live next door and above the store in what used to be a casino. Truly a General Store (still selling hardboiled eggs, cast iron pans, and long underwear), but now with a bookish, global, clean and labor supporting vibe. Locally and globally sourced items from India, Mexico, and wherever the hippie raised culture conserving owners find great stuff to sell. Food? YES! beautiful local cheeses, wines, pastries, and Store-made salads and soups on weekends. Beach blanket? Yep. Sunscreen? Yep. Snacks and puzzles and toys for the kids? Yep. Wonderful antique little oddity in a seaside town south of Half Moon Bay. It's mostly an old-timey (authentic) general store with an amazing bar and fun snacks. The building is very beautiful old historic building. It has a very nice bar. One can sit outside on a nice day which I did today. I walk in a try to find either a menu or ask; no menus I try to get the attention of the guy behind the bar no luck. There is a woman cooking in the kitchen, she looks at me an ignores. Not able to get any help, I simply select a unlabeled sandwich some chips and a drink. Sandwich was some kind of cheese & cucumber thing. Perfect for a vegetarian or vegan. It is that kind of place and the posters and books there are all reflective of that point of view. Staff not very friendly or helpful. Sandwich small and not very good. Total bill was $12. Not too bad but I should have had lunch at Alice's. Will not be going back either for the food or the "talks & seminars" they hold there.... At least I did not get treated rudely like some other visitors. read more

It's a two-star rating because of the explicitly rude staff member (details below). If it weren't for the incident, I think this place is decent pit stop. The high prices are understandable given the location and inflation. The pastries were delicious. Live music was playing outside, you can sit and drink/snack. The bathrooms were clean. Purposefully rude staff: there was a display case of pastries at the cash register/bar, and I asked what they were since there was no label next to each type of pastry. The bartender who was serving me (not like he was in the middle of something else and I interrupted him to ask a dumb question) said "you can read the sign" referring to a general menu. Except I did read the sign, which didn't align with what was being displayed, hence my question. I calmly called him out, and upon realizing I wasn't a vulnerable POC who was going to take it, he backed off with the hostility. read more

To the recent review claiming the race card. You are ridiculous! I used to work at this amazing store and I can reassure anyone visiting the store will see right away there is no racism. This store is totally inclusive and accepts all people. Bicyclist's come in constantly and there was always an issue with getting them to remove their shoes- most times with unnecessary anger or attitude. The floors are ancient as is the store. The cleats literally ruin the floor. Next time don't pull the race card- it's really horrible for people actually experiencing racism. read more

I absolutely love this place! What a delightful eclectic experience. Live bluegrass / country / folk bands on the weekend! Interesting knick-knacks abound - I particularly like the beautiful hand-carved wooden treasure chests tucked away in the back. They were surprisingly high quality. Lots of clothing on sale, and a couple rows of books for sale too. They serve great coffee, have a full bar (!) and serve snacks. Interesting characters mill about, and it's quite common to see bikers around (and as an added plus I didn't see any squids). There are plenty of tables and seats, so feel free to bring a book and relax with a coffee or a drink for awhile. It's a very relaxing atmosphere. It's also just a great place to relax and stop if you're driving up Highway 1 and enjoying the coastline and the views of the sea. Bathrooms are relatively clean. Pro tip: take the road less traveled and plan a stop here before going to Half-Moon Bay. Also, this avoids the typical stress inducing traffic on 92 west for the common approach to HMB. 1. Start off in Saratoga, or alternatively use 280 for the next step... 2. You can direct your GPS to Alice's Cafe in Woodside, then... 3. Direct it to the San Gregorio General Store, and then... 4. Half Moon Bay! You won't be disappointed with this strategy! Treat yourself to a delightful back-roads adventure that ends near the sea. It only adds about 20 minutes and it's usually totally stress-free compared to the 92 west to HMB approach. Lots of love for this place. Will definitely be returning! read more

This is possibly the best place in the world. I stumbled upon here on pure happenstance, and I am so thankful that we turned the car around to check it out. After making our way towards the coast on 84, we passed by this little gem and made a U turn. Then waited 10 minutes for it to open, no idea why, but I think it was the universe telling us it was worth it. What started out as a "cute shop, let's check it out" turned into "there is pure magic in this bloody mary and we cannot leave until the extremely talented musicians are finished." We ended up lucking out getting there so early because by the time 11 rolled around, every seat in the place was full and most of the standing room by the bar was taken up, too. This is clearly a local gem and it is completely worth the drive. I think we left with stars and hearts in our eyes. read more

What a great place, I can't believe I've passed by it for so many years. Today was a hot one ugh , so we stopped in to get something cold to drink. What what a great place! When you enter There is a bar on Your immediate right with maybe a dozen stools. On the left are a bunch of tables and chairs. While we were checking out the place a man and a woman set up and started singing. Hopefully the short video I took comes through ok. Check out the two signs too, they cracked me up! They have an amazing selection of things in the store. Maybe you'd call it eclectic! Books, dishes, clothes, stuff for kids, fun things for adults. My wife bought a purple jar for her canning and fermenting of veggies. A lot of the products they sell are from Spain and are very well made. This place sucks. You might think it might look like an oasis in the middle of nowhere - you might be right, because you'll get crappy or no service. I came in here for a break during a moto ride with Doc Wong's motorcycle skills clinic. The service sucked. I walked in here and noticed a bar, and also a band playing some old time music. That was kinda kitschy. They have tons of little old general store type knick knacks for sale, drip pourover coffee... it looked promising. With so much potential, I walked out empty handed. I went and grabbed an overpriced turkey sandwich from the cooler, and went to the cash register and waited. and waited. and waited. I looked around to see if anyone was working here or can ring me up. I saw 2 guys standing by the cooler just hanging out and chatting. They saw me waiting. I guess they were just other customers. Maybe they thought I was an alien because I was in full leathers from the moto ride. I got so fed up with waiting, I put back the overpriced sandwich in the cooler and left. Right when I put the sandwich back in the cooler the guy walks back behind the counter! The jerk works there? WTF. He didn't even acknowledge me, and just hung out. I wouldn't have been mad if he said "I'll be with you in a second". I'm glad I didn't give any of my money to this store, and I'm glad I used the restroom here. It's kinda funny though, I could have gotten the same service from any tree or random bush along side the road. read more

A store with genuine unique personality, a bar, live music, a liberal feel, and a random assortment of products with fun and thought-provoking themed sayings. What's not to like?????? Highlights: - Atmosphere: eclectic with a we can change the world, open to everyone, liberating feel, but not over the top. It's like a place you would expect to find in Austin, TX where the theme is a proud "keep Austin weird." It felt like I was on vacation somewhere far away from Silicon Valley. - Bar: supports that challenge conventional ways feel. Fun being able to hold a drink in your hand and shop around. Only other place I've done that before is New Orleans or Las Vegas. ;-) - Live music: adds to the local vibe and actually was really good. It isn't just annoying loud while you shop background Abercrombie-like noise. If seats were available, I would have tried to stay for a while just to listen and watch them play. - Products with smart sayings on them: from buttons, to postcards, to bumper stickers, to t-shirts. Things like "I think therefore I'm dangerous," "Without deviation from the norm progress is not possible," " Invest in America: buy a congressmen," and "US health care plan: don't get sick." I consider those opinionated message items like pop-culture art and eat those types of thing up. Went home with a few items to say the least. - Book selection: everything from save the environment green themes to Jack Kerouac to James Joyce to cookbooks. Cookbooks range from California artichokes to Austin cookbook with George W. Bush featured in it... - Overall random selection: in addition to the above they have: cards, clothes, mugs, cowboy hats, piggy banks, posters, sodas, local wine (and surprisingly good ones), etc. Their posters highlight people from Harriet Tubman to Albert Einstein. Even their magnetic poetry collection is large and ranges from movie lines to horse lovers to wine lovers. There's a few large collections of mini themed card decks with various topics like lost insults or cocktails. Lowlights (my flip side to highlights): - It's one of a kind and I probably can't swing a trip there every weekend ;-) - If you take the less traveled hill route from Pescadero, you may have moments when you are concerned your friend who's driving is taking you out in the middle of nowhere to leave you for dead. :-O Nothing is out that way--with the exception for a rare house every few miles. I didn't know what to expect when my friend--our fantastic Pescadero area guide who did get us back safely--mentioned a store with bar. I was thinking maybe a sterile 7-11 that's only cool cause you could drink there, but this is so much more. It's like it's own little community and free personality in itself. It's in middle of nowhere but in the small town of San Gregorio. Unique and interesting shop. It's a coffee shop , an antique store, a bar , a bookstore and a general store all in one. Sometimes they have live music. The floor is original from 1800's. Cool gas fireplace inside. It's worth a stop if you are in that area. People who work there are really nice and helpful. This place is adorable! Perfect stop for drinks during a trip to Half Moon Bay with some local friends. Stopped here to meet some friends of theirs, and had some vodka tonics to bond over. While everyone was getting introduced, I got distracted by the store itself, though. I'm a teacher and a reader, and the book display initially caught my eye- several education-related books and kid-friendly texts related to the environment and conservation, etc. Good reads, though some where a little on the liberal extremist side for me, personally. Wandered more and found cool shirts and hands, and a wrap I should have bought but decided to rethink and am now regretting not getting. Lots of cute dishes and kitchen accessories/decor items, including salt and pepper shakers and various serving dishes, mostly in the shape of fish. Towards the middle, there were lots of educational toys such as puzzles, various animal puppets and stuffed toys, and the like. Also found some accessories that I liked, but again, decided to rethink them and later forgot. Oops! Drinks were strong and good, bartender was friendly without intruding on or interrupting conversation. Bathroom was odd- single stall with a non-locking door, inside of it's own room but no lock on that door, either. Entry door is behind the bar, which was cool but also a little odd. Felt wrong to be going behind the counter, but I guess that's small town trust for you. Or just a poor floor plan. Cute little space, would go back. Kind of secluded, but apparently it's a locals place- rumor has it that Neil Young lives nearby and occasionally plays here. I was a little self concscious at first, coming in here all sweaty from biking up the hill and clad in spandex, but it really is a crossroads for all types -- some old dudes at the bar, some cyclists taking a break, some Silicon Valley-type families hanging out, and some guys playing fantastic live guitar and harmonica. As long as you take off your shoes, none of the local types will give you the hairy eyeball for looking like a yupped-out cyclist. And good coffee!! I stopped at this store for the first time today to get some snacks, and was puzzled by the distinctly unpleasant vibe from the fellow behind the cash register: no eye contact, no acknowledgement, dropped my change onto the counter. This is after observing him have a normal conversation with another customer. Sometimes it's hard to tell if the person giving you the dirty looks is actually racist or merely having a bad day. After reading other reviews here, I'm going with racist. Just for future reference, the guy is pictured prominently in google map's listing for the store. read more

I'm a regular cyclist, today I choose a route just to stop by this place to get coffee and enjoy the live band . I didn't know I had to take my cleats (cycling shoes) off, my bad didn't see the sign ( but it's weird for a store to ask you to take your cleats off anyways but respecting the policy). I go in and there's this rude entitled employee telling me I need to take my shoes off, I said I was sorry and i started taking my cleats off right away, he continues "btw there's a sign go outside and pay attention if you're not blind! I don't want you to ruin our floor!", I ignored him and pretended I didn't hear, thennnn I saw another guy on my left with his cleats on , I told the guy so is this rule got everybody cause this gentleman is having his cleats on. There was a pause and he turned to the guy who seemed to be his buddy and joked "hey you too hahaha", It wasn't fair so with a smile I told him "hmm seems it's only for new customers:)" ( I had my shoes off by then) He goes "you can go somewhere else!!.." I got out and never replied back.. but ya I'll go somewhere else and never go back to this shitty place.. shame on you really I only wanted a coffee..
