They sell small empty containers to fill with the Holy Dirt, but we left it at a dab or 2 on Bob's knee and Gayle's neck. So far, the hoped for miracle has not yet occurred. This time around there's a Visitor's Center that I don't remember from before. I stopped in and was greeted by a very friendly volunteer. They also had a bunch of religious art on sale by local folks, which were well done, but not really my style. The Main Sanctuary and the Side room (with the Holy Dirt) in back were what I remembered. The "dirt" found at the well (pocito) in the room is considered holy because in this spot, the crucifix of "Our Lord of Esquipulas" was found in 1810. All that being said, Laurie and Gayle remarked that the Spanish depiction of their Catholicism here was behaps too dark, somber, and bloody. I guess the portrayal of negative consequences does resonate with some folks.

With clean adobe lines and huge buttresses, it is an architectural and spiritual gem. Built between 1772 and 1816, it is the only original church which remains intact in the Taos area. As an active place of worship, the parishioners and the community members gather annually to re-plaster the historic adobe church. Known as "The Enjarre" or "The Mudding" of the church, volunteers mix an authentic blend of clay, sand, straw, and water into a thick mud paste. Layer by layer, the paste is applied from the top to the bottom of the church and then buffed with a sheepskin to reinforce the walls to be a resilient barrier to withstand the elements for another year. A bit tricky to find as the church is tucked away off the main highway, but definitely worth a visit.

That's why you'll see the Hebrew for God at the entrance to the Basilica. Apparently, the statue of Bishop Lamy was also an espionage meeting point during the Manhattan Project. There there's the La Conquistadora Chapel: the only surviving portion of an older church destroyed in the 1680 Pueblo Revolt. It houses a 30-inch wooden statue of the Virgin Mary brought from Spain in 1624, making it the oldest representation of the Blessed Virgin in the United States. At the entrance is the statue of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American canonized by the Catholic Church. Rather than traditional Mohawk attire, she is depicted in Native Pueblo style. And there's more, and something to discover for yourself as you wander in. Helpful docents were available just into the Church during our visit. There's also a pretty good gift shop just as you come in.

There is a gift shop, very much worth visiting. One can also spend overnight if planned ahead in their guest house which is powered by solar panels. BUT there is not cell phone service, at least I had none. They have their own cemetery and bury their residents upon their death, by the next day at noon. Quiet and peace was all about us, I will go back to spend some nights and eat my meals with the brothers

The Chapel is a very close walking distance from the Santa Fe Plaza. The cost to enter was $5.00 general admission and $4.00 for seniors. Inside the Chapel beside the staircase there is a beautiful alter. We had a nice visit but 10 minutes is all you need to see everything. Will return.
