Seafood Shack. Summarizing it in 2 words. This spot is located right across the waterfront in West Haven on the side closer to New Haven. It is pretty easy to find off of exit 44 on I95. It is a very small locale with indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor area consists of picnic tables and inside it is quite small but perfect for that quick lunch. Very friendly staff, the restaurant is quick service. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a hello and I ordered a lobster roll. It was fantastic. Great lobster to roll portion. It doesn't come with a side so if you want something make sure to order it. Really enjoyed my meal, I'm glad this place isn't a seasonal restaurant so you can it enjoy it year round. Was really in the mood for seafood and searched seafood near me.. I've been to most of the restaurants in my area so I thought I'd give the sandbar a shot.. I got the calamari lunch special served with fries and marinara sauce. Food was ready in about 10 minutes, it was very good my favorite had to be the fries! The only thing I'd change was a little more calamari meat then breading.. but other then that I will definitely visit again. This is based only on delivery. I know seafood isn't always the best food to order delivered, so please take that into account when reading this- I can't speak to how different my experience would have been if we had eaten in. While nothing was bad, nothing was really great (or really more than OK) from our delivery order. We tried the wings, which were OK, but went unfinished in a house full of wing lovers. We also had the calamari, which was OK, but a little chewy (possibly would have been different fresh) and a buffalo chicken sandwich, also OK. The lobster rolls I would say were really good, because they were served full of fresh delicious lobster, with very little mayo, which is how I like them. If I was reviewing only the lobster rolls I would have added another star. I would definitely try this place for eat-in if I was in the area, but I wanted to give an honest assessment of my delivery experience. read more

Can only agree with the rave reviews. Delicious lobster roll! The sides we got (fries and onion rings) were good too. The real winner was the scallops, though. We got them grilled, not fried, and they were cooked very well. Not too raw, not overcooked. At $20 they weren't cheap, but fresh seafood isn't and this was worth it. If you are fussy about where you eat versus what you eat; don't bother coming here. It is the pure "Hole in the Wall" great food for a fair price. One of the better lobster rolls I had in New England. Also tried the Fried FRESH scallops and homemade cocktail sauce; they were SO ONO! The food was really good, we had the lobster roll and the platter which had a ton of fried seafood and fries. The wings were mediocre but they're priced right so no big deal. The only misleading thing being from out of state was their location. On the map it seems like they'd be right by the ocean but looking carefully you see it's really off a busy street and you can't really see the water. They only have a few places to sit so I wouldn't suggest coming with a big group. read more

Amazing little seafood place! Thanks again yelpers. We found this spot after a couple hours of shopping at nearby IKEA called to make sure they were open in December, so glad they were. My 1st experience at this establishment was a disappointment...I decided to give it another try & I was extremely pleased with my selection ( lobster roll ). My husband kept hearing about how great this place was and finally stopped in to grab the family dinner one night. This is not a fancy place, get your food and go sit at the beach! Lobster roll... yum! Shrimp dinner has A LOT of shrimp, kids loved the fries. WAAAYYYY better food quality than Chips with the same idea of a menu. Had an unbelievable experience here just now. Unbelievable as in unbelievably BAD. Read on. I literally just got back from the restaurant to pick up my food, which was an entire ordeal because they can't keep track of their orders and customers. I placed an order for the lobster roll platter through Yelp, which I guess is partnered up with a company called Eat24. Anyway, I pay online and place the order for pickup, and they send a receipt to my email. The estimated wait time is 45-60 mins. After 40 mins, I head over to the place. I walk in and tell the cashier (a young man) that I placed an order to pick up for Yesenia. He checks the computer and looks confused. He asks me, "did you order online?" I said yes, and he goes to ask the cook behind him about the lobster roll. The cook looks confused for some reason (don't know why, considering he's the one making the food), so the young man goes to the back and asks an older guy about it. The older guy comes out to the front with a piece of paper and receipt, and tells me "He already took it". WHO already took it? I had no idea WHAT he was talking about. I thought that he meant that maybe a delivery guy took it out, so I said "No, I ordered it for pick up, not delivery". The guy says, "I know but some guy took it already". This is when I start getting short. I tell him that I don't know what guy he's talking about, but my name is Yesenia; Yesenia is a woman's name, and I am here to pick up what I ordered. He's obviously never heard of someone with my name, but now I'm wondering, how did they just give the food away to someone else? Did they even ask for this alleged man's name before giving him the food? There was a young couple sitting behind me and a man behind me in line waiting. I was starting to get very frustrated and embarrassed. They turn around and see a brown paper bag sitting on a rack over the grill, awaiting pick up (which I didn't even notice to begin with). The older man tells the young man to grab it, and brings it to me. The older guy says "that's it, here you go". I tell him I'm opening the bag and checking it before I leave, because I want to make sure it is correct. I check, and it's exactly what I ordered. I thank him. The guy then had the audacity to say, "Next time I'm going to ID. Do you have your ID?" I can't believe after all of this, he has the nerve to embarrass me further and ask for identification. I show him my ID, and he takes a nice 30 seconds staring at it. Then he gives it back to me and tells me I'm all set. I haven't even tried my food yet. Honestly, if this is how they operate, I DON'T CARE how good their food is. I will never be coming here again. Unless you order in person, do not bother giving this establishment your business. read more

Great classic divey New England clam shack. There are a few sparse tables inside, and some picnic tables facing the water (and street) outside. The location is also a lot more convenient to the major highways that a lot of other shacks along the coast. The prices here (especially the lunch platters) are very reasonable compared to other similar places nearby. We ordered whole belly clam lunch platter, and a lobster roll. The lobster roll was $15 at the time, and was generously filled. It was pretty good, a dedicated lobster roll place would do better - if you are only looking for a lobster roll. The clams (after adding a few packets of salt) were great, expertly fried, and tasted fresh - a generous helping came with the lunch platter. The fries were excellent, and the best I have had in a while! There are also option for non seafood eaters, and our dining companion was pleased with their cheesesteak. Overall, it's not mind blowingly amazing food, but if you are looking for a decently priced variety of good tasting seafood, this is a great option. read more

A bare-bones, classic seafood shack, the food was fresh and excellent ! Upon reading YELP recommendations, we decided on The Sandbar. It was VERY GOOD ! I had been craving the whole belly clams, which are largely unavailable in upstate NY. They did not disappoint, nor did the hubs fish sandwich. 3 big pieces of sole, fried to perfection. In the photo's, the clam basket looks sparse, that's because they were so good, I forgot to take a picture until I was over half way done !! I got the clam side ($20.50) with the cole slaw. They yelled at me for being on my phone even though I was in the middle of conducting business with another lawyer. The food has changed and is no longer tasty or good. You get enough fries to count seriously in the lunch special and the clam strip or shrimp are very few. There was also a big chunk of a sponge particle or dust under my fish. When I called to complain they said I could bring it back so they could look at it. They know what I was given why look at it. Made a quick stop here on our way to Providence to meet the funniest comedians out, Desus and Mero; why do I mention it? Because that definitely creates a good bias as I was already in a "happy place" mentally!
