It pains me to write this (lengthy) review having worked with Sandra for over a year for Spanish lessons. As you'll see from my previous Yelp reviews, I usually only leave positive reviews (I've written 14 reviews, all 5 stars). I tend to not write any negative reviews in order to not impact anyone's business. This one, however, is warranted. I found Sandra on Yelp, and saw all her glowing reviews. She has great energy, so I got sucked in. There were some red flags, but I ignored them because she was so personable and complimentary during our lessons. The red flags: She immediately asked me to leave her a positive review on Yelp after about two lessons. When I hadn't by the following week, she asked me again. I felt pushed into leaving her a positive review. She's extremely pushy. At the end of every lesson she reminds you to pay her in advance via Venmo for the following week's class. I understand she is a freelancer, and this is to avoid people from cancelling on her, so I completely understood and respected this. That is why for over a year, I immediately paid her after each lesson for the following week's lesson. I never missed a payment, yet she ended every lesson by reminding me to pay her on Venmo. Her lessons were via Zoom/Skype for about 55 minutes, and the last 20-25 minutes consisted of a writing component. During the writing component, she would shut her camera off until the end when I'd read her what I wrote. It seemed odd to me to pay someone $60/hour, when for about 20-25 minutes of that time she wasn't participating in the lesson. Thus, I eventually asked for our lessons to be solely speaking lessons for the full hour. During many of our Zoom/Skype lessons, she was interrupted by someone on her end. A few times she was vaping but tried to hide it by covering the screen with her hand. I never said anything, and that's my fault. She was very personable, I felt bad saying anything or discontinuing working with her. Multiple times she would email me last second, asking to change the date/time of our lessons. No problem. Except the one time I had to change our lesson to the following week due to needing to fly to the east coast for my mother-in-law's funeral, she didn't give me a refund. I told her since it was less than 24 hours' notice she could keep the $60 and I'd rebook for the following week when I returned. I never thought she'd take me up on the offer, but she did. My fault. I then told her via email I was going to switch to every other week lessons instead of weekly. She said she understood. Until our next lesson, when she tried to see if I would book for the following week. Extremely pushy. At that point in time, I realized enough was enough. My husband, friends, family and other language tutors had been telling me since about month one of working with her that I was being taken for a ride by her. I finally no longer felt bad in discontinuing working with her. Despite that, I sent her a very kind email (see picture) telling her I'd be discontinuing my lessons with her, but that it had been a pleasure working together and I'd be happy to refer people her way. I asked her on a Monday for my $60 back for the Wednesday lesson I had pre-paid for. She replied (see picture) saying she doesn't issue refunds. First of all, it's not a refund. I never had the lesson. Second of all, it was my understanding she needed 24 hours' notice. I gave her over 48. I replied to her (see picture), and she never responded. After over a full year of working with her, that's how she chose to end it. I hope she feels great about getting to keep that $60 for the lesson I never had. I truly mean it when I say, find another tutor to work with. She will make you feel as if she cares about you, but she only cares about the money. Sandra - please do not reply as you have to others about why you have your "no refund" policy. I've addressed that above. And the end of the day, you know I was a very reliable and respectful student, and you know not giving me the final $60 for a lesson I pre-paid for and never took after over a year of working together wasn't the right thing to do. As I said in my email, it was actually despicable. read more

Before finding her I was using Preply online virtually with two different teachers, it was not comfortable for me and I dreaded it. Since finding Sandra I can see the way she teaches compared to others and it is a teaching style that feels way more relaxed with a natural approach other than so by the book. I have no idea how she is as a tutor, but when I called to inquire about lessons she was pretty short and abrupt on the phone. She asked me no questions about what I was trying to accomplish, and just launched into her rate information and the fact that she only does virtual lessons. I've been taking classes with Sandra for a little over a month now. She brings good energy to every class, punctual and communicative. I've seen so much progress and one of them is being comfortable to verbalize words and sentences without being shy. Sandra is the Spanish tutor of my dreams! I tried three tutors previously (two on Preply) and I felt that I wasn't being forced to speak. Sandra actually has an understanding of the English learner's conceptualization of Spanish grammar so can explain why sentences/ conjugations/prepositions work in the way they do. She also makes use of every minute of the hour and mixes dynamic exercises together to turn your brain on right away. I took intensive Spanish during my junior and senior years at Yale before taking a two-year hiatus from formal instruction. I sought Sandra out to refresh what I learned and improve my conversational fluency. Sandra exceeds all of my expectations. She is supportive, warm, punctual, and communicative. She structures the one-hour lesson impeccably so that the student practices all aspects of oral and written Spanish (verb conjugation, translation, first-person narration, third-person narration, and description) in digestible chunks. Her extensive teaching experience informs her presentation of the material, making every minute beneficial. I work full-time and don't have a lot of time to study, so I feared that working with a tutor for one hour a week and watching Spanish TV wouldn't be enough for me to improve and therefore wouldn't be worth the cost. (I don't have a lot of disposable income, so the decision to take private lessons was significant.) To my surprise, I have progressed noticeably and rapidly. I am very happy with the investment and will continue working with Sandra. Having studied Italian, Chinese, French, Spanish, and Portuguese in formal classroom settings, I confidently affirm that Sandra is the best language teacher that I have ever had. I highly recommend working with Sandra! I started weekly Zoom classes with Sandra about 5 weeks ago and she is helping me make a lot of progress. I had 4 years of high school Spanish but that was 15+ years ago so I've forgotten much of it. She has great exercises to keep the lesson relevant to what you want to learn to talk about in Spanish, and she is terrific at explaining the grammar and different usages. She asks great questions that are at my level so I can respond in Spanish, and then gives writing prompts to practice writing stories and speaking sentences. She also will show pictures of different paintings and ask you to talk about it in Spanish. All different ways of practicing listening, speaking, writing, and creating conversation. She has also recommended two shows in Spanish on Netflix that I'm now watching with the subtitles on to practice my listening, and combining that with our lessons I am starting to recognize some short sentences without reading the subtitles. She also recommend Duolingo which I'm using and listening to their Spanish podcasts which are great for listening practice also. I had to create an account to write my first Yelp review - and it sucks that it's not a great one. I'm not so sure if Sandra is considered a great or a professional tutor. She has great energy for sure... but nothing more. I had scheduled my first lesson two weeks prior. A couple days before my lesson, she requested me to switch my session 2 hours earlier. Things happen, I completely understood. I had also asked if there's anything I should bring or prepare beforehand. She said nothing was needed - so simple. During my very first lesson, she didn't care to ask what my exact needs or what I'm seeking for. She jumped right in to "test" my skills. Her methods(?) of teaching in vocabularies & narration seemed very basic. A great tutor would've catered more towards individual's needs. She also mentioned how she can suggest books & movies that I could read & watch to help my study. She was to share some of her suggestions over the week - nothing. She cut my 1 hour lesson 10 minutes short - she charges $50/hr. Before we ended, she requested that I should Venmo another payment to arrange my next schedule. The only "policy" she informed me was that I needed to notify any cancellation/rescheduling a day in advance. Two days before my scheduled lesson, I shared that couldn't make it & wouldn't be able to reschedule for the remaining month - she seemed understanding. Because I wasn't sure when I'd be able to reschedule, I asked her for a refund. She said that wasn't allowed. I called her to explain & inquire over the phone. She didn't have any good reason but abruptly hung up the phone followed by "Well, that's just the policy and what can I say?". Who would want to go back & reschedule after that? I don't think I'd want to reschedule for another lesson with her EVER. My experience did not come even close to such highly professional & competent Sandra as these reviews say.
