It's a reminder of another battle between the Confederacy and the Union that took place here, about half-way between Richmond and Petersburg. The marker reads, "To the west of the road here at Proctor's Creek Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler's Union Army of the James attacked the outer line of the Confederates' Drewry Bluff defenses on 13-14 May 1864. On the first day, Union Maj. Gen. Quincy A. Gillmore struck the Confederate right flank, commanded by Maj. Gen. Robert Ransom, Jr. Ransom's troops crumpled under the onslaught, rallied and counterattacked, and finally fell back to the main lines at Kingsland Creek. On 14 May, Gillmore and Maj. Gen. William F. Smith launched coordinated attacks that drove through the first defensive line but stopped short of the second. The Federals then entrenched." [Review 11969 overall, 1751 of 2019.]

On June 16, 1864, Longstreet's Corps of Lee's Army cross the river there going to the defense of Petersburg." The second marker is S-15 and it reads, "A mile east is Drewry's Bluff, James River fortification of Richmond, 1862-1865. Earthworks remain." It reads, "The Craig House, perhaps Richmond's second oldest structure, was built between 1784 and 1787 by Adam Craig (b. ca. 1760-d. 1808). He was clerk of the Richmond Hustings Court, the Henrico County Court, and the General Court. To save the house, a group of Richmond citizens in 1935 formed the William Byrd Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1864 and raised by her mother Elizabeth Draper, a former slave, Maggie began to make a change as a teenager. Ms. Maggie Walker was an African American entrepreneur with a vision to make tangible improvements in the way of life for African Americans. She was a bright woman of many firsts, who dedicated her life to making positive social change within the community, especially for African American woman. Ms. Walker was the first woman bank president in the United States. She was also known as a writer, teacher, activist and speaker. If you are in the City of Richmond, I would strongly encourage you to check out Maggie Walkers' National Historic Site, located on E Leigh Street. I believe the National Park has done an exceptional job being able to tell the story of Maggie Walker and reliving her life. Maggie Walker is truly a woman that has accomplished a lot in her life, despite her disability as well as being an African American woman, and deserves to be remembered for her great achievements! Although this statue is located on the main street in Downtown Richmond, I still truly encourage to check out this memorial plaza.

What a difference 200 years makes. There was a time that the United States and the United Kingdom…read moredid not always get along. Well before the "special relationship" came to be, there was war between the two countries. More than one. This marker remembers that time. It reads, "On 4 Jan. 1781, British troops led by Brig. Gen. Benedict Arnold landed at Westover in Charles City County and began marching to Richmond. Learning of the threat, Governor Thomas Jefferson directed the removal of public records and military stores to safety before evacuating the capital. On 5 Jan., Arnold's troops easily dispersed colonial forces arranged on defensive positions here on Church Hill and Shockoe Hill and occupied Richmond for twenty-four hours. Before returning the following day to Westover, the British burned some private buildings and public storehouses containing military supplies, and destroyed the foundry and some public records at nearby Westham." A sad story in the Civil War days, the Richmond fire that took place as the Union army captured the…read morecity. It took place shortly after President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet fled to the south. Much of the city was already abandoned by this time. The marker reads, "After midnight on 3 April 1865, Confederate soldiers set fire to several tobacco warehouses nearby on orders from Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell, as the army evacuated Richmond and marched west. Two distinct fires spread rapidly throughout the commercial and industrial sections of the capital. The core of the burned-out area, some 35 blocks, extended from the James River in some areas as far north as Capitol Square, and from 4th St. east to 16th St. Frightened citizens huddled in Capitol Square while looters rampaged and firefighters battled the fires. The Union army, which occupied the city early on 3 April, finally brought the fires under control in the afternoon." This small, short bridge has been around since the 50's! It was once pretty worn and bumpy, but…read moreit's since had quite a facelift! The reconstruction was completed in 2013, is much wider, and includes a pedestrian walkway and an emergency lane. The bridge connects south side to the near west end of Richmond. Once over the bridge heading towards Richmond, the road changes from Huguenot Rd./Route 147 to Cary Street and continues downtown. It's a straight shot, smooth and breezes by quickly over the James River but has some beautiful glimpses of the water. Under the bridge had some lovely scenery too. Along Riverside Drive and Westham Station you'll see some sprawling estates, Pony Pasture Rapids, Huguenot Flatwater and John Smith Trail and cool railroad tracks. Lovers of nature and hikers will love to visit these spots by the bridge. I'm glad this bridge named after the Huguenot French Settlers, got an upgrade from VDOT, making it a much safer structure. They have my full "support"!

Located near Gambles Hill and the Tredegar Iron Works. It reads, "Imperial Airlines Flight 201/8, carrying 74 US Army recruits to Columbia SC, crashed southwest of Richmond on 8 November 1961. All of the recruits and three of five crew members perished. At the time, the crash was the worst in Virginia history for a single civilian aircraft. At fault were poor airline management, substandard maintenance and crew error. The tragedy resulted in an investigation of the charter aircraft industry that revealed many violations of safety standards. In 1962 Congress mandated that all supplemental carriers reapply for certification by the Civil Aeronautics Board and meet stricter insurance and financial requirements."
