At least this time when I asked "how old is the steak" I didn't get, "It's fresh in every day"…read more What I did get was, "I don't know, never been asked before, I'll ask the chef". That was fine. However, you'd think having found out they would come back tell you the answer. As I said that if it was 21 days or less, then cook it medium, if over 28 days then cook blue. They took the decision to cook it medium rare. It turns out that the chef didn't know as he wasn't the one that placed the orders!!!! An experience chef should be able to tell. Moving swiftly on...... Starter: Smoked trout fillet, horseradish potato salad, beetroot - £5.50 - Very nice Main: 6oz Rump Steak, garlic butter, hand cut chips £13.25 - The thickest chips I've been served. There seemed to be two pieces of steak. One which was quite tender, and the other very tough and grisly. I washed it down with a Rioja, which I thought was 100% Tempranillo, but the bottle revealed that it was blended with Garnacha. This rather detracted from the taste, but you have work pass these things and force the wine down your throat. Would I return? Yes, and sample other fayre. Charming staff, and friendly. I did request a VAT receipt. It was only when I returned to the office and found that the VAT number was missing. I couldn't get hold of them until 15 minutes before opening time.

Just half a block from our B&B, the landlord recommended this restaurant and we enjoyed it (food…read moreand atmosphere) so much that we had lunch there the next day before we hopped a train for our next town in our journey around the UK. We started with a tapas plate to share, and it was superb. S. had a seafood pasta and I had pork belly, which was define, once you cut the rim of fat off. Tender and delicious. For lunch after touring Shrewsbury Abbey and the Castle, we stopped in for the cheese board--which consisted of smoked applewood, brie, stilton, mature cheddar, and a smoky cheddar, which grapes, crackers, and honeyed walnuts. Perfection. Wait staff was great--attentive, friendly, and prompt. One of the highlights of our short stay in Shrewsbury.

We loved the Corn Mill so much, we came back twice, bringing friends the second time!…read more Recommended to us by a local shopkeeper, and were we ever so grateful! Both times that we came, the food was bursting with delicious, fresh flavors. The halloumi fries had the squeaky bite they're known for. The fish and chips had a light and crispy batter and flaky fish. The cheese and potato pie was creamy comfort. Both of these dishes were recommended and ordering twice. The steak sandwich was tender and meaty. Desserts were sweet, satisfying, and left us all feeling quite content after the savoriness of our meals. We had the same server both times and she was fantastic! She was friendly and attentive, making sure that we had everything plus any extras that were needed. It's got to be said that the view here is phenomenal! The Corn Mill hangs above the River Dee, which gives spectacular views. The patio area makes one feel like they're floating above the river, while the dining room's spacious windows give a full view. Before you leave, take a little walk outside and head on down to see the mill that gives the restaurant its name.
