I had written a review for the voice-over school, Voice One, where Sarah Kliban is an instructor - and I wanted to share it here as well: "I have had an incredible journey thus far at Voice One! On a whim, I started taking classes in February 2016, with the intention that it would only be part-time and mostly to "scratch an itch" that I'd had for many years -- I have a BA degree in speech communications, and also people were ALWAYS telling me that I had a unique voice and should do voice over. About a month after I took my first class, I was unexpectedly laid off, and I decided to use the opportunity to dive in full-time for about six months. It's now been five months, and I am sincerely amazed at how much I have learned and accomplished. I am planning to record my demos in about six weeks, and I am feeling very confident and excited to produce some evidence of my hard work. I have shared this background of my personal story because I think it has greatly influenced my journey. Most students also work full-time while attending Voice One, and therefore cannot attend 3-5 classes/week, like I have been fortunate to do. The more classes you are able to take, the more quickly you can progress. And I think this is important to mention, because while I have been able to acquire a monumental amount of skills in those five months, it was because I was able to dedicate myself to this full-time, both in and out of the classroom. I want to emphasize how supportive I have found everyone to be at Voice One. When I first began, I was so nervous every single time it was my turn at the mic (...and I still am a little). But I didn't let myself get frustrated when I just wasn't getting it, and my instructors never got frustrated with me either. In fact, the direction that I have received has always been fair and constructive. They are not there to make you feel good about a crappy performance. They are there to get you to realize your full potential by teaching you tried-and-tested techniques, and to push you to incorporate those techniques in every single one of your performances - until you not only get it, but you get it right consistently. Some of the best advice I ever got was from Elaine Clark, the owner and often-instructor at Voice One. She knew that I was struggling because I had taken most of the core classes, and I had studied and knew most of the technique, but it was all stuck in my head. She told me that I needed to just let go, trust myself, and let it flow out of me. And that was a huge breakthrough moment that made all the difference in the world. She not only took the time to give me careful instruction during class, but also to take the time to really see where I was getting hung up, and to coach me away from my trouble spots. I also want to give a huge shout-out to another instructor, Sarah Kliban. Her class, Narration Simple, was incredibly insightful. She is a no-nonsense instructor, who can seem tough if you are thin-skinned... but if you want someone to teach you how to really get inside a script and make it sound like the words on the paper are thoughts in your head, rather than something that you are reading, this is a must-have class. I found her approach to be so helpful, especially with the emphasis on how both sociological and psychological behavioral patterns affect our interpersonal communication. That was the focus of my BA studies, and I found it super helpful when applied to these narration studies. If you, like me, have never been a performing arts student before, and tend to have a more cerebral approach to things, this class is instrumental. It opened a door for me, that allowed all the other classes to make sense. I know everyone's journey is different, and mine is just one example. I didn't apply to or send my resume to them. They found me by posting a casting call on Beau Bon Casting. When I submitted myself they gave me a call and arranged an audition for a documentary. I got the part and the gig paid $150. Everything went well and they were super nice. They also kept my resume and headshot in their files. If you want to have your profile added I think there is a $15 charge, but you get entered for free if they cast you in something. I don't know how often or if I will hear from them again, but they are a legitimate casting agency and maybe worth the $15. If I do hear from them again, I will let you know. Today I took an Auditioning For Film class taught by Sarah Kliban at Voice One. What an incredible class. The credibility and authority she brings on the subject is without question, as she is both an actor and a casting director. There was a wide range of experience in the class, from the beginning actor to the 20 year theatre veterans. Sarah's information was useful for everyone and practical. The curriculum covered the basic do's and dont's when auditioning, but spent the majority of time honing the actors skills in making strong scene choices, "designing" your setting and delivering the the most believable and interesting audition. Stressing the importance of relationships, risks and imagination. Every student received 3 different audition sides to perform. Sarah's teaching style is direct. She isn't afraid to push you, even if at times it means stripping away at someone's defenses. Sarah's motivation is clear, to teach an actor how to use there own personal experiences to give their best performance. My intention in taking this class was to increase my value as an actor and feel better prepared for auditions and camara work. Sarah's guidance did just that. read more

I have worked with Sarah as both a student and a voice actor. She is great to work with and in each situation brought professionalism, experience, skills and a terrific attitude. Sarah teaches a couple of classes that I attended at Voice One in SF. Her Narration class is full of VO techniques and acting skills, but one of things I found most useful was her way of teaching you to listen to what you recorded. By involving the whole class in describing (not criticizing) each student's read, she teaches you what you should be listening for in your own recordings. When you get home and start using it, it becomes fundamental. Now I listen for technique and acting skills, but I also ask myself, "How knowledgeable did I sound?" Like Rossana S., I recently took an Auditioning for Film class with Sarah Kliban at San Francisco's Voice One. And like Rossana, I took the class to increase my value as an actor. I probably would have taken the class even if Sarah didn't teach it, but knowing it was offered under her tutelage could have easily been the only impetus needed to get me in the door. Sarah brings a unique perspective to her coaching in that she's an actor and casting director--it's not often that someone's able to advise you from both sides of the fence. Her feedback is genuine and honest, and she tweaks all actors, regardless of their tenure, to bring out performances that are better than the last. I was fortunate enough to take a class led by Sarah through Voice One, and my goodness was it worth every penny! She told our class upfront she had a reputation for being tough, which I understand, but that isn't how I would put it. I realized quickly while watching her instruct my classmates and I that she deeply cares and wastes no time cutting to the heart of your issues. I have an MFA in theatre, 15 years in the acting business, have taken countless classes and workshops AFTER getting my degree, and Sarah Kliban is top notch! Seriously. It was such an awesome experience having Sarah as a teacher - She is so specific and has so much practical and heart knowledge to share. Sarah Kliban is AWESOME. I'm a relatively new filmmaker (made a bunch of short movies in my teens). I just finished my first 14 minute short film, "Loaded Paradise." (www.loadedparadise.com) I knew that I needed to not mess around when it came to casting. One bad actor can ruin a whole project. (For that matter, so can one bad director, but that's not what we're talking about here. ;) While I do take some credit ("ahem"), I absolutely attribute an undeniable part of the film's success to the casting work of Sarah Kliban at International Talent Casting. She's the real deal, folks, and absolutely worth every penny. She won't give up on you, or your project, until she's got the folks you need. The themes in my film were a bit out of the ordinary - okay, a lot out of the ordinary. We had cast everyone, through Sarah K., and were very pleased. Then, one of my key performers called me up and said he couldn't do it, two weeks after being cast, and only about 6 weeks before the shoot! I was worried, as you might imagine. I needn't have been. My experience of knowing and getting work through Sarah is a positive as it gets. I'm a SAG-AFTRA actor finally though here efforts. After auditioning for quite a few things through Nina Henninger Casting over the years, I hadn't quite landed a role through them. I was already a Taft-Hartley (must join) level actor, but that elusive national gig hadn't come. Sarah was always frank in her feedback on auditions - especially if you wanted to redo it! She reminded me that the actor never calls 'cut,' the Director does! And, so after the latest audition (for Chance - Hugh Laurie's HULU series), I finally decided to ask Sarah for 5-min of her time via telephone -- essentially, I left her a message, about my frustration and wanting to hit my career to a higher gear. Well, low and behold, I landed the 'Chance' day-player gig. Sarah did eventually return my call, and with her cheerful reply reminded me that it was my perseverance that landed the work. My daughter SHAWN CRAB got her first ever film here.. thanks Sarah her casting director.. we went here October 6, 2014 it was my daughter's first time doing this kind of thing and I am so happy how it turns out to be so perfect. I like how Sarah handle the scene at first I am very nervous as I am not how my daughter will react if she's not acting with me now acting with a STRANGER but yeah she did a good job and got a Call back after a week, this time with the Director of the Film.. OMG sooo excited just giving her a better chance of getting the role and yes she did it...
