All of the drinks were imported from Portugal, they even had Super Bock for £1.75 a bottle. I felt like I was back in Portugal, even the TV was in Portuguese. The service is friendly and professional, and it's nice that I had the option of a few different teas, as many coffee shops simply offer "tea" as well as the coffees. The coffees available sit on a big set of shelves in large kilner jars, and a chiller by the main counter shows the sandwiches and snacks available, as well as a cake stand on the counter to tempt you! The decor looks fresh, new, chic, understated and has that grey wood varnish touch that seems to be quite in at the moment. It's a bar but also a restaurant although it still has that pub feel but the new era pub feel. We went for the food and the cocktails - on a Friday night! This is the real time to test a new eatery. They did surprisingly well. We didn't wait for ages, had fun with the cocktails and discussing the place. Cute little notes were hung from table decorations and writing on the walls. Selection: Starting sharer platter - Italian meats, rocket, olives, mozzarella Soup and chips Random I know, but it worked. All of the food was tasty and fresh. Even through the renovation, it still attracts a lot of the old crowd. We were sat next to some people who didn't stop saying the F word through our latter part of the meal. I decided to pop in to try their new "Toffee spiced latte" range. I ordered ahead via the mobile app, and I waited at the pick-up point, when the staff member brought my drink, they didn't acknowledge me, not even a simple "Enjoy" or "Thank you", they just seemed to go back to the counter, even though the store wasn't busy at all. I wasn't impressed with my drink either, It didn't have the topping which was advertised and it looked nothing like the photo, I think they did add a little too much ice for a "small" drink, as it was watery and had little flavour. Slightly overpriced compared to similar chains too, especially considering the size and quality of the beverage. 2* - One of the few places to grab a coffee in Walkden which isn't a fast-food chain or supermarket, but still shouldn't be an excuse for mediocrity.

Wherever there was a Starbucks, a Costa Coffee shop was opening up nearby or next to them. It first happened at the service stations on the motorway. THEN the petrol stations all had coffee stands. THEN all of the shopping malls/centres suddenly had one. EVEN if it was a Starbucks dominated area, they TOOK THEM ON! From this I reckoned Costa was a force to be reckoned with. (I also reckon they pop up near every Tesco, like Starbucks pop up next to every Asda... I have not enough evidence or time to prove this) ANYWAY So Walkden redesigned and built a new part to their Ellesmere centre (which looks like the Hive from Resident Evil) and they're attracting new business. Costa being one of them! I walked in the first time to be greeted with smiles and a warm atmosphere of happy staff, music in the background and... OHMYGODLOTSOFGLUTENFREETREATS!!!! Seriously, the Starbucks places I have been to recently now only do a gluten free chocolate brownie. COSTA DO MORE! Gluten free bakewell tarts, chocolate brownies, fruit and nut bars and more. I know it's a chain, but this place has made me smile. The drinks are not half bad, they come in colourful thick cardboard cups and a big smile from the staff.

My regular Flat white, £2.50, is always spot on. Smooth yet strong and 9 times out of 10, they nail the coffee art on top :) One thing that I think Costa need to look at is the cost of the food they sell, it's very expensive. The toasted teacake or pannatone are about the best value @ £1.75 and £1.90 respectively. Recommend to grab a table before ordering if you're with company, as they disappear fast!
