I have loved this restaurant ever since I visited it in NYC and this place was no disappoinment either. Good ambience with loads of parking. Tried the mini idli dipped in sambhar, the kara dosa and were both lovely. The medhu vada was decent but overloaded with black pepper. The chutneys and sambhar are delicious. The kadai paneer vegetable and naam were very tasty and nice too. The filter coffee reminded me back of India just wished it was a bit hotter. It was luke warm so kinda a mood dampner. We visited this place for dinner after a long drive from New Orleans, LA. Called them before arriving and they were open till 10pm. We walked in around 9:25pm and were seated right away. We got seated on a 5 person seat and we were 5. They informed us that kitchen will close in 20 mins so we placed our orders as quickly as possible. We ordered onion masala dosa, idli vada sambhar, onion uttapam, rava masala dosa, mysore masala dosa, chaas and some few dosa for to-go. Few of us wanted to order biryani and pulav but they ran out of it. Food overall is average and something that is available at other south indian restaurants. Me and hubby tasted rava masala dosa, onion uttapam and both tasted ok. The onion in our onion masala dosa was raw so it tasted kind of weird. We removed the onion and had it like masala dosa. Idli was fresh and medhu vada was crispy and we liked it. Moreover, we tasted chaas and it was too gingery and spicy so we didn't order a second one. The service is good and our server provided good service. She informed us about availability about different items, kitchen closing times, and answered all the questions promptly making the ordering process easier for us. The table was kind of small for 5 people and it was difficult to keep all the plates on the table if there were more than 5 plates. read more

We used to come here every week but when I recently came, the manager did not respect when we came and began letting people that came after us be seated earlier than us. We even told them that we had two (2) children who were very hungry and the staff did not care. When I confronted an employee, they ignored the fact that I came earlier. Visited on a weekday night for dinner and the place was packed with people yet the service was quick. Ordered masala and paper dosa which came with three different types of chutneys and sambhar. Near authentic South Indian food. Warnings for all you Texans - this place is all vegetarian. The food is quite good and I will definitely go back. I love that they dont use the disposable plates. The steel plates, cups are the way food is server in India. Very cool. The Good : The food The Saravana Bhavan Meals : Very Good . gives you the biggest bang for your buck ( or 11 bucks in this case). It comes with a Poori ( deep fried bread), Rice, a variety of Dals, Vegetables, Yogurt and a desert. Everything tasted great. The Combos : Good. Just a little pricey. They taste great though. The best idlis in the Dallas area. I realize thats not saying much but these are really good. Mixed Vegetable Parota : Never heard of this but is supposed to be famous. tastes great but a little spicy. But thats the way its supposed to be. and my Favorite.. Madras Special Coffee : This is the way coffee is supposed to be. dont be fooled by the size. This is one potent drink. Love it! The starbucks equivalent would probably be a short wet cappuccino with sugar. The Not so Good : Service. The staff is trying its best but I think management rushed the opening. They clearly were not ready during the first few days. They seem to be better now and it appears they are still hiring. Hope management gets their act together. I picked up a Grub Hub delivery here and was met by an extremely rude host, seemed to be the manager. He continuously ignored me, never checking on the order I was to deliver. I kept asking the rest of the staff and they just shrugged. They were more than busy and only 3 including himself were serving people. The patrons looked very disappointed and the food looked undesirable. After 20 minutes, he FINALLY checked on my order and said HERE. The food is okay. It's not the best but it's also not bad. The service is definitely lacking. They seem to be annoyed with having to work. We usually get the Mysore masala dosa. The combo #1 is also a good option (idli, mini dosa, sweet, and another item I can't remember). The combo is good to get a little bit of everything. Tried their parota which comes with 2 types of vegetables on the side. The parota was burnt on the outside and undercooked on the inside. The chickpeas with the parota were undercooked (still hard). Thanks GC for bringing me here, what a great find :D Right in the middle of a plaza and along a stretch of highway cluttered with restaurants, this place is somewhere I would have never thought to stop by~ they are a restaurant chain from India, and they specialize in Southern Indian food. What's that? So you know those Indian all-you-can-eat lunch buffets with curries and rice? It's not that! Instead, think bread / dough / yeasty stuff: finger foods. The menu is extensive and includes northern cuisine for good measure. I didn't even realize the place was vegetarian until writing this review; the spices and flavors keep your taste buds busy so that they won't even miss meat! The menu was really extensive, but G said the best thing offered was the paper masala dosa. Dosa! What's a dosa? A ginormous crepe-like or rolled wafer-like sheet that is crispy, chewy, light, and airy~ how they have have a pan to make it that big, I'll never know. It comes with a bowl of masala potatoes, 3 types of chutneys (mild coconut, spicy cilantro, and flavorful tomato, which was my fav), and lentil soup (which can be slurped directly or dipped). As to what you eat with the dosa, anything goes; tear or break off a piece of dosa and dip, scoop away with anything. I thought it was pretty fun to eat (*easily amused*). Spoon and fork included in case anyone wanted to pretend they actually have table manners ;) It was both crispy and chewy at the same time, and it tasted like junk food = utmost deliciousness! G got really excited, haven't seen him chow down like that, so this place *must* be good! We had no problems with service-- the food came in a flash, the waitress was nice. Also, don't come late; there was a huge crowd at the door when we left around 9pm-ish or so! This would be a great place to try new foods or introduce friends to a new cuisine. There were so many dishes that the staff was serving ("What's that? And that?") where I would ask my friend for more details. To begin we arrived to a sign stating that they had a software failure so cash only. Fortunately we were able to manage but were not expecting that issue. It was very crowded and chaotic. Once seated we waited a long time and a server never came to take our order. We had to request someone to help us and eventually placed our order but....the order was lost or never put in. Waited and waited and again no one stopped by our table. Had to ask for help again. Eventually after an hour or more we received our food. Also asked for a refill on water which we never received. So hard to give more stars because of the chaotic and nonexistent service. The bright point was that the food was very good but they are not equipped to handle the crowds or the setback with their software failure. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for close to a year now after a recommendation from a former work colleague. This is a South Indian chain with locations all around the known world. Of course they would have a hub in Irving. I ordered the lunch thali. I'm not entirely sure what all the delicious things were called, so I'll try to describe them as best as I can. One metal bowl held chunky potatoes and peas. (I'm making this sound like bland English food. It's not.) Another bowl held dal. Yet another held a lentil soup. The spiciness of the lentil soup sneaks up on you, but luckily one of the bowls holds yogurt. There were other bowls full of delicious things. Can I describe them? No. Were they delicious? Yes. My favorite was a yellow-orange paste that tasted reminiscent of pho. Maybe it's flavored with star anise? The only other time I've felt this strongly about the smell of star anise was enjoying the mussels at Carrabbas. Call me crazy if you will. I know star anise when I smell it. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness. I would have returned just for that. And I don't know if it was just because it was lunch hour, but we were the only non-Indians in the place. Its huge and all the array of chutneys provided tingles my taste buds. Again, like I said, its not the best, but you cant go wrong with 7 bucks for a spicy masala dosa. I've never enjoyed Indian food so much. Most of it is south, but you'll find variants on the menu. The paper dosa is to die for. It's crispy, fresh and accompanied by delicious daal (lentil soup), three chutneys (condiments) and perfectly seasoned potato. The red/orange chutney is my favorite because it has a little heat. My other favorite dish is the butter paneer, which I never have time to take a photo of because I'm too busy inhaling it. It's rich, creamy and flavorful with perfectly cooked cubes of paneer. It comes with the thickest, fluffiest, chewiest butter drenched naan (bread) I've ever had. We always get a second order of the naan to help sop up leftover chutney and sauce from the paneer dish. They usually have pretty fresh mithai (sweets) up on display near the checkout. Unfortunately, service is pretty slow and it isn't the cleanest location. I almost want to give 3 stars because of the full experiences mediocrity but the food itself is always going to be my main priority and it is wonderful. I would say take your meals to go, but some things are just best when placed fresh in front of you. Especially dosa, it would be a shame to take it home and let it get soggy on the drive. Otherwise I highly recommend the food here. I've heard there's another location that's more appealing so maybe check that one out instead! read more

Yummy! Hubby, kiddo and I went for lunch on a Saturday. I had the special meal and hubby had the medhu vadai/spring dosai and kiddo had the mini idlis. I loved the special meal! It came with poori, rice, sambar, rasam, kootu, paneer sabzi, poriyal (in this case beetroot), yogurt, pickle and a sweet dish (sweet Pongal). It was sooo yummy! Hubby loved the vadai which came with sambar and chutney and but his spring dosai was ok. He liked the actual dosai but the filling was so so. He loved the three different chutneys that came with the dosai. Kiddo loved her idlis which were super fresh and soft (not reheated and rubbery like we've had elsewhere)! They finished off their meal with extra sweet Pongal which they both loved! Definitely going back, but I think it is best to stick to favorites (like vadai/masala dosai etc). read more

I am really surprised about the low ratings some have given but do understand their service skills are not perfect in timing delivery of the plates. Half of my family is South Indian and they see it as normal. They don't have rules like we do where you wait for everyone to be served to eat. The food is fantastic though. We have loved everything that we have ordered and for my non vegetarian friends it is such a fun experience for them to see the giant Dosas and Poori and enjoy tasting all the dishes served in the combos and Thali. Our family favorites though are Masala Dosa, Channa Batura and the Thali and the OMG yummy coffee! My friend also never leaves without grabbing a paan at the end of his meal. It is a very casual place the second location in Plano is exactly the same only has a nicer ambiance so if that is important to you I would go to that location. read more

I did a takeout yesterday and this review reflects that experience, not the in-store dining experience. Fantastic food. I ordered a masala dosa, a Mysore masala dosa and a plate of idli. They came with three kinds of chutneys and a big container of very very spicy sambar. Loved the dosas, idlis and the chutneys. The quantity was more than enough for two people. They're generous with the chutneys and we have leftovers in the fridge. My only gripe: I was annoyed when I went to pick up the food and was told that there was a 5% discount for paying with cash. How about mentioning that when I ordered the food? Also, they weren't too happy about taking my Amex card (which is OK because several small businesses do that---something to do with higher fees I think). The food here was delicious, and the menu is huge so it's hard to decide what to get! Everything was great. However, the service was very odd and not great- our waitress asked very soon after we sat down what we wanted to eat. We didn't know so we asked for a few minutes, but she didn't come back- we had to call her over to finally order. Once we did order, she came back a couple times with questions or to clarify something, which was fine except- she only would address one member of our group of three. I ordered an appetizer that they apparently were out of, but instead of telling me and asking me what I wanted instead, she quietly told my friend who we were with. When the food came, she sat it all down in front of my friend. It was very odd and made me feel less than welcomed. This is a South Indian restaurant. The south Indian food - dosas, uttapam, sambhar, and chutneys are good. I wouldn't try the North Indian cuisine they offer - just not their core competency. The service is BAD. The wait staff is not properly trained, sometimes bordering on rudeness.. They just don't look passionate about the job they do. The whole process is very mechanical. You might experience unusual wait times even when it is not the rush hours. The whole seating arrangement is shabby and inefficient and ambience is dull. To my operations master wife, it looks like a great operations case study!! They can definitely take some professional help there!
