Nagle could not offer me any suggestions,referrals personal experience or insight that helped my situation. It was clear he doesn't have any real experience working with addicts. I left this visit feeling hopeless and Dr.Nagel went out of his way to make me feel as if I was guilty of something and made me even question my self worth for a moment. My first visit with him was very different but he said something I will never forget. I was shocked anyone working in Health or Human services would say. I apologized to Dr. Nagle for being a few minutes late. He told me not to worry, he was glad I was not one of "them". When I asked him what them meant he said "You know, hospitalized, out of jail" He went on to say that he was "Paid the same" for the easy ones like me. As a probation officer and counselor in this town for nearly 20 years I will air my medical history to all to save someone from an interaction like I had with this guy. Dr.Nagel is going to hurt someone that needs help and doesn't have the resources I have. Doctor here's my suggestion: Stop the front bro. Your going to hurt someone buddy. Dr.Nagel will also tell you you need to be seen monthly for suboxen. That also is not true. You need to be seen Quarterly. He's doing this addiction doctor thing to fill his schedule and monthly visits are more money. If you're considering this treatment you need to see a real addiction specialist. I left my visit with Dr. Nagel questioning my self-worth. I have never felt so hopeless in my life. Fortunately I was seen later the same day by what was clearly a doctor with experience working with our population. And the next doctor I saw looked at the same report , and had a very different idea of how to treat me. First of all like a human. Again, she would put me on hold and each time would drop after 25minutes. She finally said she could help me after the third time, asked my name and then said she would transfer me to her co worker and I am now on hold again and it's been another fifteen minutes. Instead of wasting both of our times please just communicate to your patients a better time to call opposed to them being on hold for an hour all over a phone call that normally would take five minutes. I just needed to make my first appointment as I'm looking for a new primary doctor and now I am looking elsewhere due to the simple lack of communication.

My first session with Dr. Culver went well. He asked a lot of questions and took adequate time to…read morelisten to me about what I was experiencing. I had already tested positive for a marker that can indicate a specific autoimmune disease, but Dr. Culver sent me to the lab for additional tests. Those additional tests came back normal but I was battling some really debilitating symptoms, so I asked Dr. Culver for a follow up visit to continue the discussion and search for the cause of my health problems. His demeanor in the second visit was completely different from the first. I sensed right within our first interaction that he had written me off as imagining my symptoms, and that by having advocated for continuing the discussion, I was somehow challenging his authority. He acted curt, dismissive, and condescending. Every time I would say, but what about this symptom? What's going on with that? He would reply on the defensive by telling me that it was very rare to be associated with an autoimmune disease so I probably didn't have one. As the months passed after this visit, my symptoms worsened. Then, I ended up in the hospital as a result of these very symptoms. The doctors and nurses told me that I almost died, it was so severe. I was so frustrated that Dr. Culver had not listened to me. I did the only thing I could, which was to keep persevering and advocating for myself. I messaged him to tell him what happened and request another visit. He responded saying that he was sure it was unrelated to anything he could help me with. He refused to even meet with me unless I fulfilled certain conditions-- that I had to meet with multiple other doctors first. I knew I did not need to meet with those specialists and no one at the hospital had thought so either. But I had no choice but to jump through the hoops, so I met with them. It was a complete waste of my time and money-- they both were not quite sure why I was referred to them and couldn't do anything to help me as it was not in their field of speciality to do so. When I met with Dr. Culver the third time, his demeanor was again dismissive, curt, and condescending. He refused to acknowledge any relation between my hospital visit and the autoimmune disease in question, although it was beyond obvious, even to the doctor in the hospital where I was admitted in my emergency visit. It was clear to me that at this point, Dr. Culver didn't care for my health so much as he wanted to "win" in this battle his ego constructed against me as the patient. This story ends with somewhat of a happy ending in that I now have a doctor who helps me, treats me for my condition, and listens compassionately. I wish the same for everyone else here in Santa Cruz looking for these kinds of answers. That is why I have chosen to write this review as a warning. I think this may be especially true if you are a woman-- I sensed that he was especially dismissive of me because I was a young female, though perhaps he is like that with men as well. Overall, I would caution against seeking care from Dr. Culver and instead find it elsewhere.

When I was first diagnosed, I was in tremendous pain and clueless with what was happening to me. Dr. Culver educated me with what RA is and discussed my lab results and what options I had. My health future is a collaboration and my doctor made me feel safe and that he really cares about me. My health is complex and treatment for me is challenging, Dr. Culver understands this and collaborates with my other doctors. He is compassionate and he listens to me. There was an incident, unrelated issue from RA and he visited with me at Dominican Hospital to check up and see how I was doing. I was very touched by this. The impact Dr. Culver has had in my life is he wants me to feel better and live my life with as little pain as possible. I am fortunate that Dr. Culver is my forever rheumatologist. Also, his staff are professional, and friendly and Graciela is attentive and personable.
