We built a custom 4200 sq ft Satterwhite log home 35 years ago and still live in it. They were very helpful with design to get us exactly what we wanted. Over the years we have called with questions about maintenance etc. It is VERY comforting to know they are still there for us and always very helpful. It was scary for me (not my husband) not building a conventional house. Get the large logs. We didn't stain the inside walls and used Aspen wood for the Great Room ceiling. My husband and I just attended the bi-annual log home building seminar put on by the fine folks at Satterwhite Log Homes. Y'all, these are some truly good people!! We thoroughly enjoyed the seminar. Very informative for anyone planning to build a log home, or just curious about what alternatives are out there. This is a 2 day seminar. You spend the first half of the first day listening to the presentation by the owner/founder Sam Satterwhite. You get the history and rundown of the process. This is a completely family run business, mom, dad, kids and grans:). Everyone is very involved. This is a super group of people. You can see the pride in what they do in each and every one. The second half of day 1 is spent touring model homes. Some under construction and some completed. They have a fantastic range of homes to see, from small cabins, to large custom homes. Day 2 begins with an awesome buffet breakfast, then tour of the main office location. Thus is where the magic happens folks! We attended our choice of small "mini seminars" where we were able to learn about a variety of topics from financing/insuring a log home, to designs/land preparation for your dream log home! Catering was awesome!! Breakfast, lunch and dinner day 1 and breakfast and lunch for day 2. They have personal relationships with the catering companies, supporting local business owners. bought a previously owned, 1 owner, Satterwhite home-FANTASTIC! The previous owner has not maintained the home but it was still Solid. Slight maintenance needed to bring it back to full beauty but SOLID! Satterwhite staff in Longview, Texas were wonderful and helped with info on needed supplies to bring her back to her pristine beauty. Very well built homes. **DOT NOT USE SATTERWHITE** Brett was horrendous to work with. We ordered an awning package in May. Brett told us it would take 4-6 weeks. It took 15 weeks. I understand wood shortages; but the communication was non-existent. I would call for periodic updates. He would tell me that he didn't know what order I was talking about or wouldn't go look for it. He said on at least 7 occasions over the last 4 months that he would call myself or my contractor back with an update. He never called. We always had to call him and deal with his attitude. He was always short and rude on the phone; like he doesn't enjoy his profession. He was given the measurements of the awning. He assured my contractor that he had an equation to figure the amount of material needed for the T&G roof decking, to include waste. It was a 540 square foot deck. He sold us 1300 square feet of decking. I was overcharged $864. After talking to him about HIS mistake, he was still unaccommodating. He told me to drive the remaining decking back, which is 6 hours round trip for me. He then told me he would schedule a truck to pick up the remaining decking. He then emailed my contractor telling him that it was my contractor's fault that Brett doesn't how to do math. I haven't heard from him for a week. With that I contacted his supervisor, Sam. Sam, while much nicer than Brett, was also unaccommodating, saying that I would have to spend a day and $100 on gas to drive the remaining lumber back to Gunnison; which is not worth the $864 refund. In addition to the horrendous customer service; half of the T&G decking had been left in the sun for sometime; as it was warped. We had to fight it the entire time during assembly. Satterwhite Log Homes were absolutely horrific to work with. The amount of unprofessionalism and obtuse ineptitude was disappointing and stressful. I recommend no one do business with them. read more
