A few tips and tricks for those visiting: They ask you leave your backpacks and purses downstairs in the provided lockers. The elevator system isn't great, and will always stop at the lobby, no matter what you push, so it's a time consuming process to use it. The restrooms look like they should be pull doors, but they're actually push. It's the oddest thing and the honey and I were both tripped up by it. Overall, we both really enjoyed the museum, much more than the famous Prado, and would highly recommend stopping in if you're visiting Zurich, especially if it happens to be a Wednesday.

My expectations were met and I was able to see the exact sort of art that I absolutely love. The galleries are spacious enough that you can get as close to or as far from the art as you like. The audio guide (free! sanitized!) was easy to carry and listen to without being a struggle. Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Gaugin is my favorite sort of art. And then I enjoyed van Gogh's Roses, a Monet lighthouse, an early Picasso portrait, a Munch crowd, a Bonnard landscape and so much more. The museum also has a "Swiss Painting before 1800" gallery that engrossed me. Lots to see and you can expect to spend at least two hours touring the exhibit halls and getting just a little bit lost. The gift shop was very good and I'm happy with the prints I bought though I would have loved to see more of the art in relatable sizes. Not everyone has room for a full sized poster at home. Technorama is a nice science museum, but it is pretty pricey. It's 28 CHF a ticket but if you use…read moreyour student ID, you can save 3 CHF. It's about a 20 minute train ride outside of Zurich (which if you're not a tourist with any form of Swiss Travel pass, the train ride will cost you about 25 CHF round trip) They have many different exhibits and lots of hands on activities. I would say you need two to three hours to explore everything, not including the shows. We were only able to catch one show, which was the gas one. Although the show was in German, which we don't speak or understand, we were still able to follow along. Tip - they have lockers by the entrance that you can put your belongings there. You just need a 2 CHF coin for deposit (which you'll get back).

It is about. 30 minute train ride, however, double check which stop is the closest to the science center. We chose to get off at the main station in Winterthur and took a 45 minute walk from there, but there is a train stop MUCH closer. The center is 3 floors of exhibits based on light, magnetism, optics, electricity, water, and much more, and even more wonderful is that the exhibits are all interactive in which visitors can touch and do. In fact, there were as many adults as children participating, doing things. It is EASY to spend an afternoon there for sure and not notice the time going by. The museum is a large space, hence the peculiar location, on the edge of town in Winterthur. The center also has workshops for children to participate, however, they are in German. They also have a demonstration, and this too is in German, but they have placards/booklets to explain what the speaker is saying. It is a neat place to visit, and especially if you have kids of ANY age....they will all enjoy being here, really. A few people reviewed this place and included comments about the food. Honestly, it is fine, but again, you don't come here for the food...it's cafeteria food, European style. We did take the bus back. It is the #5 and it goes to the main train station. Unfortunately, from there we couldn't tell it went since it didn't indicate it , meanwhile the Technorama ends/starts there. Overall, a 4.5 for sure. My one critique is that it isn't well noted on the "tourist boards" which point you in directions of different spots compared to other things from the main station.

This is a wonderful museum, family-friendly and a must see for anyone interested in energy,…read moresustainability and transportation. We stopped by unexpectedly after our hiking plans were rained out, and were very glad we did! We got discounted tickets with our Swiss travel pass and decided to check out the main museum. We spent most of our time in the energy, train, and car sections of the museum. For a weekday afternoon near closing time, it was not crowded at all so we were able to see everything we wanted. Some of the highlights are the various railroad cars - it was so interesting to see how the appearances differed across centuries! The huge model trainset would be a lot of fun for kids. We were also struck by the wide selection of cars across centuries, and the machinery that brings them up and down so you can see them more closely. The simulation experiences are really cool for all ages, we learned a lot about the different forces at play during the crash test. The museum of mirrors was also a hit - it was so much fun trying to figure out what is mirror and what is not. All in all a great experience, I only wish we could have spent longer there before it closed to check out more of the ships and aviation sections of the museum. It is a delight for all ages and very educational.

The best free museum in Zurich, which isn't saying much as most museums charge a fee…read more Place is like the road to Hana, where getting there is a big part of the attraction. The main pedestrian route leading to the museum has 180 stairs next to an uphill cobblestone road. Not sure if the road is wheelchair accessible. You would not want to climb these stairs when covered with ice in the winter! Museum has tons of exhibits on insects, mammals, reptiles, fish, and extinct animals. One exhibit features a full size mastodon of the stone ages, while another shows a modern day narwhal with a huge pole like tusk. Modern day armadillo versus an ancient armadillo ten times as large, the size of a refrigerator. Lots of interactive displays, especially for the insects, with magnifying gasses. To get the most out of it, you have to understand German. Clean and free bathrooms, unlike some places in Switzerland which charge the equivalent of a $1 to use, and a cafeteria. Great views of Zurich and the river from the university where the museum is located. Oh, and make sure the brakes on the wheelchair for granny are functioning, when going downhill on that block long cobblestone road!

Free is good, especially when you are in Zurich…read more Zoologisches Museum was nice and quiet on a Thursday afternoon. Sure there were the usual tourists with their screaming kids. I think I would be screaming too if I was a kid and seeing all these huge specimens and models of animals. If you do want some peace and quiet, going to the lower level might be an option. The specimens looks so life like and I did have a "Night in the Museum" moment. Worth dropping by if you need a time out as one cannot eat and drink the whole day!

This is a museum about the history of the city of Konstanz. It costs 3 euro to go through. You…read moreenter through the gift shop that has a lot of random stuff for sale such as kids ceramic owl piggy banks and dinosaur puzzles. My 3 year old daughter and I were the only ones in the place. There were very few things on display. A random mannequin of a woman in 14th century garb holding a fish, some paintings of medieval men and a skeleton are stand outs. I couldn't tell you anything about these pieces because everything is in German. There is also an old wooden sleigh that my daughter believes belonged to Santa Claus. There is a movie with English subtitles which was helpful and gives you the rundown of the city. The museum mostly covers the 1400s, then, randomly, on the 2nd floor there is a whole display with photos of the city during WW2 and Hitler/Nazi rule. It looks more like a celebration of this moment in history. Very strange. What is also strange is I was followed by an employee the entire time I was in the museum. Remember, my 3 year old and I were the only ones there. I am not sure if they thought I was going to take photos of their Nazi shrine or what. In any event, nice way to kill an hour while learning about Konstanz circa the early 1400's. Fun fact, in addition to their weird pride of their time with Hitler, they also love and idolize prostitutes. The cement statue by the lake that slowly spins is actually that of a prostitute or rather, courtesan.
