Trails are very well maintained and marked - almost too well (less of a wild feel). Only the very start is paved, don't despair, it gets more interesting. Decent circuit trail routes, can be added together for more mileage. I did a variation following the water which made my completed route 3.14 miles. Various bits of history tucked away in the young woodland- read up about the quarries and railroads if you're into local history. That's what those massive granite abutments (with no bridge to match) are all about. Lots of riverbank access. Decent number of toads on and near the trail at dusk. Road noise from I-95 on the western side but overall surprisingly peaceful escape from suburbia. This sort of open space is a major perk of living in Maryland.

We traveled down along the stream and at one point we took advantage of this beautiful backdrop and got some great pics. Beware, on this trail there are a lot of tree roots and rocks peeking from the ground and waiting to trip you. I know this because we tripped on more then one occasion:) The route is a loop and there are red and blue markings throughout the trail. At one point we were a little turned around, but the red markings and the "P" with and arrow directed us back to the parking lot. We truly enjoyed our hike and if you do the entire trail it's about 3.5 miles. Also, expect some elevation at points, but all in all I would say it's an easy to moderate trail to walk depending on your fitness level.

We chose the Cascade Falls…read moreloop trail as it seemed easy for beginner hikers which were a lot of members of my group and like it would not require any extra supplies. We came on a Sunday morning, parking was $2 as our shuttle was an in state vehicle ($4 for out of state!) and when we arrived around 9:30, there was already a decent amount of people at the trailhead parking lot, but we were able to easily park. There is a bathroom located nearby that is clean and has running water. I do think it is relatively well maintained and looked after, though there was 1 stall missing toilet paper. The hike itself was lovely, with fall foliage still around in sight. We did not come across any big wildlife like deer but given the amount of people this made sense. We did use bug spray on our shoes and bottoms of our leggings / ankle area to prevent any ticks. The trail itself was beautiful, there are 2 water crossing areas where you could get by on rocks but I have waterproof hiking shoes and just walked straight through. I would recommend this trail to beginners!

CYCLING THE B&A TRAIL…read more The B&A trail is about 15 miles long and easily accessible via the parking lot on Route 450 (about 2 bikes north of the "old Severn River Bridge). The trail can get on the weekend (starting at 9am) and has a number of stop signs at the entrance to neighborhoods and at road crossings. This will interrupt your rhythm if you're a fast road bike. This is a multi-use trail with joggers, dog walkers, skaters and cyclists. It's easy to share this train with 2-way traffic .. 2 can cycle side-by-side and easily pass others. Plenty of places to stop for food and drink, especially as you near Severna Park.

While riding the BWI airport loop last week, I saw a sign for the B&A trail, so I knew I'd be here next. I still parked at the Thomas Dixon Observation Area and took the trail backwards (well, there's really no right way to take the Airport Loop, but the connection to the B&A is towards the end of the loop). Once I made it to the B&A connection, I had to ask myself, "Where have I been?" I could have been riding THIS trail the whole time! There's so much nature along the trail. Wetlands, native flowers, tons of bamboo, farmland, horses, etc. I love. Also, the trail is nice & flat with few bumps from raised roots. AND the areas that are raised are painted red so you can see them and prepare for the bump. WINNING! AND, there's a bathroom along the trail with a water fountain and bottle filler. The bathroom is air-conditioned, and I even had room to take my bike inside. It was spotless. It's a cute little orange house with benches in front & grass. Many people rest there. At that same spot there's also a contraption that has tools to fix your bike and an air pump. There are several rest areas along the way in the form of benches in the shade. There are also shops in the Severna Park area that cater to trial-goers. I saw a B&A Acai and Smoothie shop, The Bean Co, which I assume to be a coffee shop, and little sandwich shops. The trail is on the back side of the strip mall, but they have tables & chairs back there for trail patrons. I even saw a taproom if you'd like to stop for a beer. My mileage from the Thomas Dixon observation area to the end of the trail in Annapolis was 16 miles (32 roundtrip). You can get some good speed on the back half of the trail which seemed to be less populated. And I'm sure it's also less crowded during the week versus the weekends. It's a nice trail!

A county-managed natural preserve right in the middle of the county. It's over 1000 acres and has…read moreseveral miles of trails. The official parking location right off Trotter Road looks more like a national park facility than one of our humble county ones- lots of spaces, landscaping, informational signage, and bathrooms. There's an educational nature trail (grab the brochure on your way onto the trail), a good place to bring a family you're teaching to love the natural world. Lots of lovely old poplar trees. The north end of the park has "deep woods" vibes since unlike other local parks, there's no mountain bikers, no horses, no picnicers, and the river is a good walk away. Plus a large buffer zone extended north from there. Until a jet on final approach to BWI roars overhead to break the spell. There's riverfront access along the Connector trail. Respect the signage regarding closed areas. Most of the trails seemed suitable for runners. Note the trails around the Meadow on the map is mowed into the fields, which makes for a different experience underfoot (not my favorite personally). The parking lot is gated with signage saying it closes at sunset. However, the gate is powered and gave the impression it's the kind that won't lock you in- but best to check with the county to verify that. The trails here weren't my favorite (PVSP trails are more interesting to hike), but having such a substantial greenspace and nature preserve right in the middle of the county is great, and having it quiet and natural is even better. We in central Maryland are lucky to have so many of these kinds of spots.

I also really appreciate that right next to the parking lot are clean bathrooms with running water and water fountains. The trails are fairly well marked and there are also maps available. There were also pamphlets of a list of all the different species of birds that live in area which was a pleasant surprise! My favorite part is the meadow area with really tall grass. But there were a couple of bird houses and once we saw many swallows (I think?) flying in the area and perching on the bird houses. Parts of the trail also go alongside the stream (I think the middle Patuxent river) and it's a very serene area and walk. We have already came here to hike a handful of times and plan to come back in the near future for more relaxing hikes!

The dirt paths are heaven though. Here you may encounter a mountain biker or two, but for the most part it is pure peace and quiet. I walked about 12.5 miles on the paths just yesterday. Every hour I am here, I feel like i am shedding months of stress.

Alot of the other parks around are close to highways so you do not get the level of peace and quiet that comes with provinces park. They have 2 playgrounds.
