It was one of the few shops in Scarborough that could feed my Sylvannian Families addiction! As a child the shop had a sort of magical atmosphere, going down the windy staircase to look through all the treasures down there. Sulmans doesn't appear to have quite the same uniqueness nowadays, they still sell Sylvanian families but so does a lot of other shops now. They don't seem to have anything unique about them as they used to. The upstairs 'gift' section is more aimed at adults but is not particularly inspiring and the same stuff is available in many other shops across town. Downstairs is still an Aladdin's cave of toys but only the same as any other toy shop and quite expensive. They do have quite a nice range of fancy dress outfits (angel and devil outfits perfect for a girly night out!!).

I've added Venus Trading to my 'goth shops' list as they do sell some goth-style clothing at the back of the shop. They tend to increase the stock of goth clothes during the Whitby Gothic Weekend (and it seems they also increase their prices too!). If you're looking for a gift that's a bit different for someone then this is the place to go. They also have some amusing greetings cards which I always check out when I visit. The clothing they sell varies from 'hippy' to 'goth' so you can definitely buy something that will make you stand out from the crowd here! I tend regularly visit to buy incense, make up and jewellery from Venus Trading but not clothing. They have some great clothes but they're all a bit out of my price range and, as it's not a big shop, they don't have a good range of sizes.

Boyes in Scarborough is wonderfully diverse! you can literally get anything here…read more The ground floor has a small food section, where you can pick up basics such as milk, tea etc and bizarrely, situated next to the 'grocery' section, is the furniture department. This furniture department isn't like any you'll find on these out of town shopping centres, at boyes that pack it and stack it high and theres often lots of remnants of packing materials over the floor. A lot of the furniture seems fairly dated, but who knows, maybe there's a market for old fashioned future as a lot of people chose to retire to this old seaside town. The next floor up, again, is a mish mash of what I can only describe as 'stuff' from toys to nail varnish remover - it's all here and generally, cheap cheap cheap! Upstairs there is the clothes department, in all honesty just keep walking as the clothes although are cheap, look cheap and are fairly badly made. The one Super duper (did I just say super duper? oh goodness I did, oh well, I'm going with it) the one super duper thing about Boyes is come December the Grotto arrives and the pull out all the stops!! It's located on the ground floor and to get to Santa you go through a beautiful winter wonderland that enchants the kiddies before they even meet the man himself! The second thing is the sheer range of things they sell -- every time you walk round a corner you think Oh, they sell those here too!. Having said that, despite having wandered through the store on a number of occasions I've hardly ever been tempted to actually buy anything -- somehow all the plastic kitchen gadgets and china ornaments and garden stuff and are all things I seem to be able to do without. But it's an excellent place for browsing!

It has a large range of cards…read moreand gift wrap, it also sells a lot of arts and craft material and then is has an extensive range of toys. They also sell newspapers and magazines. I suppose it could fit in lots of different categories quite comfortably. The range of toys is brilliant and they have some different items that are not available in a lot of other stores. I personally go in to Wrays for the arts and crafts items they stock. They have clay, paints and many other things. They are one of the best local shops for this sort of thing because of the range and value for money. The shop has quite a lot of parking immediately in front of it and also in surrounding streets.

Ther are several charity shops in this street so you can try them all. Someone I know travels from…read moreScarborough to Whitby specially to do the charity shops. This one has some nice gifts for animal lovers but for others too. They have a small but nice window display and I like the fact that the books are well displayed. They have some nice bric a brac and some unusual household items. I do have to be firm and remind myself that I have no space to spare. If you want a charity shop that gets unusual stuff given this it or at least that is what I have found.

We have often taken a detour to drive through Hunmanby and have a look in the hospice shop.It is a…read moregood sized shop and nice and light with its big windows giving a good view of the stock. They often have some unusual and good quality household items. I like a look around the counter area as this is often where you see something a bit different. The clothes are mostly good quality and well displayed. There is nice area with lots of books.I haven't been able to get for a little while but writing this has whetted my appetite.
