This place slaps! I've been there a handful of times and have also done group Uber Eats orders for their delicious sandwiches. Every single one I've had always ends up being a winner. My latest obsession has got to be their smoked salmon sandwiches, and I love their Francesca roll. I've had it in Dutch roll but the rough texture scrapes my oral mucosa making it all raw and sore (I think the only way to eat a Dutch roll is eating it upside down). The interior is quite small but packed with so many goodies, from an assortment of gourmet cheese to fancy potato chips from Spain... and lots of wine bottles including natural wines. Their service is friendly and never rushed. This is a must stop in Cole Valley, and I'm happy to keep these guys in business for many years to come. read more

For $30 a pound, one should be able to sample a cheese one has never tasted before. Unfortunately, I assumed and trusted the counter people to be informed and to have good advice. In Paris, specialty cheese shops will automatically slice one a sample before one decides. At this upscale cheese boutique, however, this was not the case. When I asked for a gouda, they showed me a hard orange gouda that I had not liked a few months earlier when I was in France. I asked them if they had another hard Dutch-type cheese, and they took out a white half cow, half goat cheese. I could not eat it. I initially had not considered going into the store because of some recent very negative reviews. But I overcame my better judgment and walked in. It looked quite acceptable, but no one was in it. In the next few days, I never saw anyone in it at around 6 p.m., which was a tip-off (I was staying in a flat in Cole Valley about five minutes away by foot). read more

In my continuation of the Summer stroll of Cole Valley it came to my attention that usually the opening night kickoff of the NFL season ritual is to get a pizza with cheese especially on National Cheese Pizza Day for Thursday Night Football. I decided to start a different ritual in 2024 but it didn't mean that I couldn't still Say Cheese at a boutique cheese place on Cole street called " Say Cheese". This place has some of the best fromage ( cheese ) foreign and domestic. First is the foreign cheese . Inside you will find a Fromagerie with a variety of cuts of cheese representing different countries. Then you have domestic Artisan cheese like the Detroit cheese brick , Wisconsin , and Vermont cheese. Then there is the deli which has a variety of sandwiches but I decided to get the Pate Campagne sandwich which came with Gruyère , Dijon, and Cornichon. The pate was smooth and tasty. I am particular about my pate and it was delicious and tender along with the cheese which made it a good overall favorable combination texture. One if not the best pate sandwiches in San Francisco.Then there is the wine. You can't say cheese without saying wine by design . The selection of wine at Say Cheese has some deep cuts mixed with some regional greats. I particularly liked their selection of Pinot Noir by the bottle ( pairs well with the pate). There are wines which will pair well with the cheese varieties .This is a good place to get wine and cheese to take home or go nearby to Golden Gate Park and savor the moments. The place is unassuming but the quality of deli meats, cheese and groceries are phenomenal. The two ladies are very helpful and knowledgeable. I ordered the Roast Beef sandwich and my friend got the Mortadella with Swish cheese and it was so good. The taste and fresh ingredients used made it a Great sandwich. I definitely would recommend you try this hidden gem. The Cole Valley neighborhood could get busy especially during the weekends. Here's a tip! Went in to buy some deli items - I bought quite a few things. I walked in and one of the staff working (short woman maybe 5'3 with short hair) didn't acknowledge me, I gave the benefit of the doubt as she was replenishing the shelves. As I waited for her to finish (to be kind) she was rude and asked what I wanted, in an aggressive manor. I was really taken aback as I was smiling and trying to let her know to take her time but for her to be so rude and to huff and puff, almost made me walk out of the store. I've run into this staff member a few times and every time she has been very rude, dismissive and unfriendly. Great store and great products but for a very cozy neighborhood where everyone knows everyone, a smile and being courteous would go a really long way. We've been coming here since forever and it just gets better and better. No matter who is working behind the counter, sandwiches are great. The specialty sandwiches are always wonderful but you can pick and choose whatever meats cheeses, etc. that you like. It's often missed is the great wine selection. It's all to go - there's no seating - but their choices of wines and prices can't be beat. I was just there at the shop getting a sandwich and when telling her my order and I mentioned the veggies I wanted in the sandwich she rudely said you already told me onions twice, I don't have any other type of onions. I told her the comment, her tone and rudeness wasn't necessary and she started going off stating that if I don't like her service to come back another day or another time when she wasn't there. Highly recommend the sourdough roll as your bread. Super fast service--no waiting around for a sandwich (like only took five mins!) unlike Luke's on the next block. Very reasonable price too especially since they give you so much (mine was $13.50 as opposed to $17 or $18 which is what I typically pay at other shops)! Next time I'll have to try/buy some cheeses and prosciutto. This place has been around forever and now I understand why! My new go-to in Cole Valley. The sandwiches here are really good. Maybe not quite as good as Cheese Plus on Polk, but they're in the same zone with this spot being a little more italian inspired. I've had a cajun turkey sando as well as a roast beef one, and both were great. They don't gussie the sandwiches up that much and are really relying on the quality of their ingredients. Decided on the prosciutto caprese sandwich that Moses, who was a great help, sliced fresh in front of us. The mozzarella tasted fresh and the bread was soft. You could easily share a sandwich but once you take a bite you may not want to share anymore. They seem to have a lot of local wholesome products which makes me want to support them even more. I was not ordering a sandwich or slicing, so apparently they have no process for ringing you up if you just buy something from the case. No one at the register, no numbers. They just ignore you while they argue with the customers ordering sandwiches. I've had bad customer service experiences here before (being told to wait to pay while the only guy there called in tomorrow's bread order, again after waiting a long time. Looking for burrata and being handed one that was expired with a shrug and an explanation that the dates don't really mean anything). It my fault for coming back. It is a cute shop and I want to love it but the guys who work there are obnoxious. Luckily Luke's down the street had the same burrata for $2 cheaper. read more

I hope Roger reads this since I love his cheese shop but his employees today were the absolute worst! Rude, off putting and cynical. So absolutely rude. I called to get sandwiches made to pick up and they said they could not, they were busy. I showed up not 5 minutes later to a completely empty shop, the employees complaining about people in the city being rude, which was totally ironic, and doing nothing else. When I arrived I said sometimes people in service are also rude and they immediately said they refuse to serve me. No one in the store and sending customers away. The really terrible thing is that I use their catering for work and if I did not know Roger was such a great guy, this would have definitely been the end of them getting any business from me. Tall guy in ball cap, maybe Jerry, rudest person in retail I have encountered in a long while and it was just the holidays!!!! Did I mention he told me to go to Subway???? I will be writing a letter to Roger because this attitude in someone else's establishment is really disrespectful and harmful to the business by it was obvious this was just a job for this person and he did not care about the actual business. Did I also mention he was extremely rude in the phone when I called as well and went in just to find out who was being so rude so I could let Roger know. Otherwise I would just go to Haight Street Market, which is what I did today and may have to be what I do for all my catering here on out...again, really like Roger and would hate to punished us business because he hired such a rude employee. read more

I only found out about this place because I was at the muni stop and my train was delayed, so I decided to stop in. I have to say their cheese and salami is DELICIOUS. I'm also super super picky about my butter and decided to try one they had there. Definitely worth the trip (and the money). Next time I want to try one of their sandwiches.
