Started with the whites.

This was the first place we visited for our own personal wine tour. For the start, it was pretty good. The staff member was very friendly, knowledgeable and ready to answer any of our noob questions. We were able to sample around eight different wines, all for free. Came with cheese, crackers, and dried fruit to cleanse the palate. The building felt very comfortable, and the surrounding scenery was truly beautiful.

Opens at 9am.

Review Highlights - Scarborough Wine Co.

Out of all the wineries we visited in the Hunter Valley, Scarborough is one that made a lasting impression, so much so I have to write about my experience.

Uses more traditional method to make wine, with the owner being a chemist himself basically constantly trying new mixes, you just constantly get new surprises from them! Honestly, know you won't believe me just by reading. Go try it yourself! Love it that they will walk through all wine when you go for the free tasting/sampling at their estate!

The space is beautiful, with an open and airy tasting room overlooking the vast vineyard (one of the few wineries in the area that grows its own grapes). There's a little something different about the wines here--the flavors are something of their own. I brought back a bottle of their oaked semillon, which was light and refreshing and stored in California Oak barrels (I'd get the same thing back here in CA if I could, but you certainly don't see a lot of semillon around here), as well as a bottle of their shiraz, which had a peppery kick to it. The lady who led us through the tastings (we had come with a tour group) was very sweet and seemed to love her job. We ended our visit with a tour of the wine cellar and the lovely outdoor area of the building, which reminded me of being in Tuscany but is apparently modeled after Southern Spain. I loved all the little details of the decor. Definitely worth stopping at!

Beaumé Restaurant at Ben Ean

Wood tables, greeneries, open kitchen, this place has everything of the trendy and relax places I love so much. This is a five stars! The staff was so adorable, providing a lot of advices and was not pushy at all in terms of consumption. They even recommended us to order not too much at once as the portions were big. Five stars again! Then, let's talk about the food: splendid! We ordered the truffle porcini mushrooms arancini and the prawns to start with. Instead of the arancini, we received the squid. I was so confused because I did not know if it was because of my French accent or because the boss wrongly took my order... But anyway, he told us to eat the squid as an additional complementary starter and that the arancini will arrive right away. Five minutes later, we had the arancini on our table! What a great service! And the 3 plates were delicious! Even my boyfriend, who normally don't like squid, found it delicious! For the main, we chose the rib eye on the bone with the figues salad. The beef was perfectly cooked (rare as ordered) and the salad delicious with plenty of figues. Portions were indeed enormous, we had no place left for the deserts. Too bad, we'll need to come back. Again a 5 stars for the kitchen! And I forgot to mention, this place is also part of the Ben Ean vineyards. Therefore, there were a lot of options with different wines grapes and prices to choose from. The wine we picked that night was delightful and really affordable for its quality. Overall, this restaurant offers an impressive ratio quality to price... ! We ended up with a $ 128 bill for two including 2 starters (+1 for free), 1 salad, 1 main and 1 bottle of wine. This place is absolutely to be recommended! We even came back the next day at lunch time for the wine degustations!

We were led into a private room and our wine guide was excellent and super friendly - she knew shit out of some wines. They had water out for us to sip and even had a cheese plate to nibble on. Here are some of the highlights 1. We sipped semillon (semi-ee-on) which are sweet whites, made from grapes in the Hunter Valley cold micro climate. 2. We sampled their Sav Blanc which is an easy drinking wine and costs about $20 per bottle. 3. Their Verdelho pairs well with spicy foods and curries :) 4. Their Reserve Chardonnay is made from grapes grown in volcanic ash and while it starts off with some oaky flavour it finishes fairly dry. 5. One of the favs was the Rose which took about three sips to really get your brain to taste. They make this using the French style using Shiraz grapes and the skins are left on for a few hours. 6. Another popular win is their Pinot Noir which is made using a wild ferment rather than controlled it is a Pouters favorite. Another bit of knowledge I learned at this estate is that it is illegal to add sugar to wines, but the longer you leave the grape on the vine - the sweeter the grape! Highly Recommend!!!! We also left with quite a few wines.
