The Schaumburg Library will always have a special place in my heart. I grew up coming here, both the old location and the current "new" one, and it has always been a safe, welcoming space for me. It's where I learned to get lost in the wonder of books and the joy of learning. The current library is beautifully designed and thoughtfully organized, with what feels like every book imaginable at your fingertips. Beyond the space itself, the people who work here are truly exceptional - some of the kindest, most caring individuals you could hope to meet. Now that I live in NYC, I love bringing my kids here whenever we visit. It's always my very first stop after landing at the airport. Support your local library! Especially when it's as nice as this one. I do want to share that they just released an app, which is nice to use to be able to quickly look at holds and check out books. I'm a wallet minimalist so not having to bring my card is great. Yes, they have books, but I've been having a great time finding out the other services they have here. I've had things 3D printed here (at a small cost), brought my kid for little social events, attended their summer concerts, enjoyed their exhibits like the arcade one they had recently, and even borrowed the occasional video game. They also have a Library of Things where you can borrow board games, STEAM kits, yard games and random entertainment equipment. Nice to know if I want to borrow a karaoke machine I can come here! They have a large kids area with toys that we sometimes take advantage of when it's not nice enough to play outside. They have dinosaur toys which is pretty much all my kid needs to stay entertained. Returning books is a breeze. They have a drive up drop off in the parking lot, another drive up connected to the building, and a drop off in the lobby as soon as you enter. Overall I love coming here and I know there's still more they have to offer that I'm still discovering. read more

The Schaumburg Library has seen impressive updates over the past couple years - it looks and feels fantastic! The layout is super intuitive: downstairs houses adult fiction, movies, music, and a large kids' section, while the upstairs is perfect for nonfiction, self-help, and educational materials. There's plenty of seating for reading or working, especially upstairs. Getting a library card is quick and easy. Plus, the location is prime - right outside you'll find a bunch of stores and spots to explore, making it a great stop in a well-rounded area. Plus they have a drive through book return. Schaumburg Library sponsors these amazing free concerts at the town square in front of the library every Monday night during the summer. Last night was the first of the season and the band didn't disappoint. "Brass from the Past" band had 15 members (full brass ensemble) and played hits from the 60's thru the 90's. They played nonstop from 6:30pm-8:15pm with no breaks. It was so much fun. Great entertainment and a fun way to start the weeks during the summer months! read more

They discourage studying at this library. If you're trying to learn as opposed to reading the newspaper, they will be very "polite" about hunting you down and distracting you. If you pull out a laptop, you probably won't be one of the lucky ones. Schaumburg is that type of place, but shop at the Target all you want. read more

We love our local library! Schaumburg has great resources: great collections, e-resources, programming (we especially loved the Korean chef food tasting--before Covid pandemic--and the one book program w author Emma Donoghue). The only reason I took a star off is inconsistent interactions with staff; depending on who waits on you at the checkout desk we've had great staff and some who were downright prickly. Recently we used the drive they window and the older woman waiting on us was rude. I get it--pandemic! People are tired of life these days, and some folks are probably not the kindest customers, but as someone who works in customer service and is also a librarian, the interaction left me w a sour taste in my mouth! If you're in the area check it out, it's beautiful inside! Before covid, it was where we took all our friends when they visited, and our nieces and nephews (when they were younger) for the cool play/magnet table. read more

This used to be a nice library, but they have developed a huge lack of seating space lately. To be honest, I am not sure what is the point of the "teen station" that was built upstairs, because it is usually empty as majority of the teens are all opting to sit in other areas of the library instead of this exclusive area designated for teens. If they can find a way to create more seating in the library, I may raise the rating up a bit. My suggestion would be to get rid of the designated teen area upstairs, and instead make it a designated area for "professionals". Just a thought. read more

Fliers everywhere for movies and book clubs and discussions. Everything is clean and nicely organized and decorated in a lovely way. You should definitely go. I came by during the pick up where you just open your trunk and check in on your phone. It was down pouring when I arrived and after waiting 20 minutes I had to get out to close my trunk. The staff got to everyone but me until I was the last car standing 15 minutes after the library closed. Nobody seemed concerned and there was no number to call. After seeing staff leaving and 45 minutes of waiting. I pulled up to the doors and honked until someone came out and I finally go the stuff I came for. The pick up system is stupid and nobody was helpful. This is supposed to be fast and efficient. The customer care was below the ground. -20/10 read more

This is what a library should be like. A quiet area where reading and studying is possible unlike the library at UIC. I've even here for a decade and a half and it has only gotten better. It's even a year since I've been here but they have added a new teen center where teens can study and also relax. There are many computers that are available for library members and an improved wifi as well. It is a very large library and has many seats to accommodate all the people who come. Also the cafe is not bad either. I might have a little biased opinion because I ate there often during high school. With a variety of sandwiches, candies, and drinks at a fair price, it's a yes for me. read more

This is the best library I have ever been to... and probaby the best one out there, after the Smithsonian or whatever one Bones works at... Digital books, readers, DVDs, order by internet... though the site and GUI could be way better, the features and functions are stellar. Nice lab with PCs for use, they should improve communication on printer processes, but otherwise, pretty sweet settup for people that need a PC and dont have one, or want to hang at the library (like my pal does) and use their free Wifi for a bit. Great place to bring the family! I'm use to public libraries that are dead. No one but kids coming in after school waiting for their rides and older people. This place was lively on a Saturday! Families were there with their kids and students. I'm not use to it. I was impressed by how big it was and the classes and workshops going on. It's very roomy and clean. There is plenty of areas to go to study and read at. They even have a large selection of games to check out! And a cafe near the entrance. I accidentally spilled some of my drink and the employee was so kind to help me out when he didn't have to. read more

After living abroad for several years and experiencing "libraries" in which the books are all out of sight and must be requested one by one, I developed a profound appreciation of the American library system. Schaumburg's library is, simply put, the best. Why? The selection! This is one massive library containing hundreds of thousands of books. Did you know library card holders are permitted to check out 100 items at a time? 100, you guys!! They have all the basics, but they also offer checkouts of books/magazines/newspapers in several languages, toys, song downloads, movies, audiobooks, sheet music, and access to online classes. What else is to like? - Many classes/workshops are offered each day. I've gone a genealogy class (nevermind I was the only one under sixty in the 20 person class), non-fiction book club to discuss cadavers, seed bomb making workshop, Meet Your Sikh Neighbor gathering, and puppet show here. - Fun movie showings and contests - Their reading incentive programs are great and so motivating. - "Book clubs in a bag" (several copies of a hot book and discussion packet that can be checked out at one time) - Small business help and resources - The cafe! Yep, that's right, there's even a cafe at this library. I can vouch for the ice cream products being delish, and I've heard the grilled cheese is worth a try. I am so darn happy that this library is my go-to library. read more

I remember this place fondly, back in the mid 90's when I used to dream about living in Miami, I would spend the Sunday aftenoons here perusing through the Miami Herald want ads... there was no internet back then. With my dream come true and now living in Miami, we do return to the area often to visit family and friends and get a fix of Winter and Christmas Spirit, and after making the obligatory stop across the street in Lou Malnati's we stroll into this place relive some wonderful memories. The place still rocks, with just about any reading material you may need, internet access, cds, and more... and also plenty of family programs for these lazy days of summer. This place used to be great for studying. until they removed their quiet room for more "Staff space". now you can't get any solid studying done without hearing people talking, eating or being really loud. its so distracting. secondly, there are never any seats available. EVER. I feel like its always Black Friday in here and I have get here right when the library opens in order to get a table. lastly, the cafe is horrendous. rude staff (at least the woman who works there with glasses). she tried to charge me 25 cents for a freaking plastic fork. and I clearly was in line before some of the people there and she took them ahead of me so I plan on complaining to the "owner" of this garbage shop. they should substitute the cheap cafe for a legitimate cafe like Starbucks. at least the food won't taste like cardboard. read more

The sour-puss old women in the library are a downer but everything else is stupendous. We just wonder what the problem is with why so many (not all, but most) can not smile and be friendly and courteous when checking people out at the checkout desk. Most look like they dislike their job and are bored to death. Other younger staff are tremendous; eager to help, friendly and able to smile without facial injury. Resources are wonderful and the children's programs and their leaders are excellent. We must give kudos to Miss Nancy for her enthusiastic leadership. She loves the children. read more

Apparently I'm the only one who has had a less than desirable experience here. The website was a bit confusing, but I figured it out and was able to call to reserve a private study room. They have large rooms for meetings/presentations and smaller rooms for groups of different sizes. They are open to the public with an appointment, or first come first served. That was easy enough. Today, I arrived at the library and went up to the reception desk. The two women were chatting, whispering in each others ears. I stood there for not too long and one of them stopped to help me. I asked, "Where is Information Room A located?" The woman said, "We don't have any *information* rooms. Do you mean the meeting rooms?" I said, "No, there are supposed to be some private study rooms. I called and made a reservation." She said, "Well, I don't know. You'd have to ask the people upstairs. They deal with adult services." I came upstairs to the information desk and told the woman working it that I had a reservation for a private study room at 6pm. She took me to the room and it said INFORMATION DISCUSSION ROOM A. Now, call me an idiot, but that looks like an information room to me. So I told her I had asked the front desk and they said they didn't have any. She sighed and told me the rooms are referred to as discussion rooms. But there was no mention that she would let the people in front know. The information/discussion/private study room for two people was cramped. It also smelled like body odor and I don't know if that is a constant, or if it was from the two people in the room before. read more

I feel weird reviewing a library but here goes... This library is just about the best library I've ever been to. Everything from tons of conference rooms to an ultra-modern teen area and a vast bank of computers. This place has everything. There is an entire section of the library dedicated to fiction as well as a kids section. The fiction section has comfortable seating and is great for just lounging around while doing some pleasure reading. How many libraries have a cafe/sandwich shop inside? Yeah, this one does and it's not half bad. Not good, but not bad either. Make sure you have your card on you because they're nazis about it. You'll have to make a brand new one if you forget to bring yours. Great place to hang out during the sizzling summer months because they are not shy about cranking the temp down to sub-zero levels. Make sure you wear shoes, pants, and long sleeves if you plan on spending any decent amount of time inside. read more

If I were just using this library for its drive-up services, or to just quickly pick up a book, I would give it four stars (minus one star because none of the employees seem happy here). But I like to linger at my libraries...savor them, enjoy the experience. And Schaumburg Library has NOT that library for us, unfortunately, despite its initial appearance. It gets zero stars for that. We've lived within Schaumburg Library boundaries for 5 years now. There was an initial honeymoon period where I thought that the clean appearance, available services, and comfortable chairs were just the best things ever, and clearly this library must be awesome, right? Until you stay for more than 5 minutes and you realize you're constantly being scrutinized on your behavior by the patrolling security guards and the librarians who glare at you from behind their desks. Now, I understand rules. Leaving your kid alone to run amuck in the children's section while you peruse adult non-fiction? Obviously bad. A happy child skipping (instead of calmly walking) their way toward the selection of books they love to read? Apparently also very very bad, and worthy of reprimand from an intimidating security guard, which the children mistake as being police officers. Yeesh. So the children's section recently got rid of 90% of their toys, puzzles, and games. They've loaded the computers with preschool programs, but the computers are glitchy and freeze and the games are difficult even for an adult to use. The security guards hover and pounce on every infraction (such as daring to slip off a flipflop and tuck your feet underneath you in a chair). The art supplies that could be checked out to use on their "craft" (a copied sheet of card stock) consisted of dried out markers. Parents are required to attend kid story time, but younger siblings that don't meet the age cut off aren't allowed. I wanted to like this library. I mean, it's gorgeous, well designed, and clearly has a good selection of books. But the employees are unapproachable, the atmosphere is cold, and I won't be returning unless it's only utilizing the drive up services. If the climate here changes I'd be happy to return. read more

Although I don't live in Schaumburg, I do have a library card from my town, and Schaumburg has a reciprocal borrowing arrangement with it (as they do with many regional public libraries; call them to see if yours is one of them). In particular, their A/V selection is outstanding. They also allow non-STDL cardholders (such as myself) to check out A/V materials -- bonus! Huge foreign film selection. Loads of audiobooks. They even have a nice sheet music selection, if you play a musical instrument. Great non-fiction and fiction sections, and the kids/teen sections also seem quite well-stocked with both classics and new stuff. Also lots of graphic novels and comic TPBs. Customer service is usually good and helpful, as well. Free wi-fi! Conference rooms! Printer access! Yay! read more

Ranked as one of the best libraries in the state of Illinois. Second in a variety of categories to Chicago's library, or University of Illinois library. Having explored many different community libraries, I do very much enjoyed this library. it's audiovisual materials is an excellent collection of nonfiction materials and radio formats from downloadable, play a ways, CD, DVD, VCR and cassette. They have a variety of meeting rooms from small groups to large classroom style. there is a café that has shorter hours than the library does, that I have not taken advantage of, but seems to enjoy many happy customers. The Wi-Fi is fast and easy to use for members. Sorry, I forgot if it works for guests as well without much effort. The online aspect of it is also very good, with access to the card catalog (It is outsourced third-party application like most libraries, so it is a little clunkier than it could be if it was developed in-house, however, since it's done with tax dollars. It's probably better to use one card catalog they can access multiple libraries). There are three locations. However, the main one on Roselle is many times larger than the secondary ones in Hanover Park and Hoffman Estates. but these secondary locations make it easy for remote pickup and drop-off of reserved items. read more

I know...who yells a library...but I just need to vent my frustration. This library is terrible when it comes to staff and computer information. You can return items and have to wait up to two days for it to get checked it, sometimes even making the item overdue. The media information desk is ridiculous. The heavy set girl in her thirties does nothing but talk...even over a cart of things that need to be processed. I watched her one day, for forty-five minutes do nothing but talk...even while her phone rang. Linda, the inter library loan lady is so bad at her job it amazes me she gets anything done. I have gone in and talked with her and her manager about how I could help with all my orders. I practically do her job for her and she still screws it up. I still get emails saying there are no lending libraries for some of my titles, but then when I order the same title and item on my husband's account, guess what gets sent to him. The check-out ladies (not all of them...but quite a few) are neither friendly or helpful. Why do you work the position where you have to interact with people if your going to be that disrespectful of your patrons. What happened to your self checkout machines? I miss those. Also, what is with the security guards? All they do is walk around the second floor and talk to the ladies at the information desk. Shouldn't you be downstairs where the people who beep are not being stopped. It's probably because they follow me around thinking I'm stealing. It actually makes me laugh cuz they're not even subtle about it. Guess what. I'm not stealing, I just know the locations I need every time I come in. I'm a creature of pattern. Let's talk about their on line catalogue. Most of the information is missing, not helping people find the correct item. Even if they find the right item (they think) the item information is not always right. They advertise certain special disc or version. When you actually get the item, it is not the same as shown. This library needs to get there acts together. Lastly, why do you not have a book sale room like every other library in the world? read more

Seriously, we're super lucky. :) If you want a legit book or resource that the STDL (the acronym maybe isn't the best) doesn't have, you can fill out a form and they'll most likely get it. There are new movies, CDs, sheet music, play away audio books, books on CD/tape, and a fast interlibrary loan system. They are organized and accurate, and if YOU aren't organized and accurate, at least twice a year they have a canned food drive where you can pay off your fines by bringing in donations. :) The website is ooookay, but they also have a bunch of really inexpensive classes you can take. You can call to book a room of varying size and with varying equipment, and at any given time there may be anything from a meditation class to a genealogy group meeting. The staff are pretty helpful, too. What you want, the STDL gots. read more

There are many classes offered to update your current computer skills, windows 10, photoshop, website building etc. I take advantage of them when ever I can. This library has very knowledgeable staff. Always very nice. Love the food for fines days, since I can't help but to accumulate some fines. Very nice place for kids to grow and learn too. Best. Library. Ever. At least in my lifetime. I love coming here. It is something like the 2nd biggest library in the midwest, or in the nation, or something awesome like that. I find myself here frequently, they have an amazing selection of books (obviously, duh, it's a library, and a HUGE one at that), movies (both DVDs & BluRay) a ton of tv show series on dvd, so incase you don't have internet or Netflix, you can get your tv show binge watch fix from borrowing from here. They have an insanely awesome limit to borrowed items, I think it is something like 80? That's stellar. They're so trusting! 80 items! Whooaaahh! They also will lend you video games, they have quite the inventory, accessories and all! We borrowed a singing game, which came with a microphone any everything, I thought that was pretty cool. They have free WiFi, and tons of space for you to stay for hours using it. They offer two stories of books, movies, play areas with magical enchanted forest for the kiddies, a pretty schweet remodeled teen area upstairs... I honestly wish I were still a teen to use their tons of cool resources in there... I tried... kinda.. and was shunned and looked at like a weirdo...sorry, I'm not this mature adult, I am still a young adult, who feels like I could fit better in there, than with the wise mature adults...and it looks really cool, so I wanted to be there... They also have loads of private meeting rooms lining the perimeter of the 2nd floor, tons of computers (both PC & MAC), with a new-ish option to rent a MacBook PRO within the library for 2 hours for us plebs who cannot afford such technology...and goodness gracious they have just about everything you could want here...there is even a coffee shop that does sandwiches and snacks too, within the entrance. They offer classes and guidance here too! The possibilities are endless here, and since we moved out of state, this place has been somewhat of a 2nd home for us, comforting and welcoming. I really enjoy the fireplace sitting area in the adult fiction book section on the first floor near the entrances, it's very cozy and inviting. They have comfy chairs, next to ample amounts of outlets for charging my slue of electronics, and a little flip up table/desk thing incase you want to work in the comfy chair and need a hard surface in front of you. I find myself wandering in here to hang out sometimes, especially now that the weather is getting chillier, and when I ride my bike here to pick up my holds, I will warm up hanging out in front of the fire before setting out again. Their reserves department must be working 24/7/365 because honestly they are shelving everything you put a hold on, and sometimes it comes from an inter-library loan, or you can suggest a purchase, and everything I have suggested, they have gotten for me (within reason of course). They are so great here, so accommodating and helpful... This has to be one of my favorite places to hang out in Schaumburg...The possibilities are endless! You can come here to escape the hustle and bustle of work, school, crazy life...and pick up a book...or 80...sit and enjoy reading it here, and dive into a whole new world, or pop over to use their internet with or without your own computer. If you borrow/sit using one of their computers there is a time limit I do believe... it is around 2 hours or something, but they are pretty reasonable here. I really love this place... Definitely worth a stop by to explore and get your library card...take a class...rent a movie, or entire seasons of TV shows, or borrow like 80 books...swing on by you won't regret it. Welcome to the best public library in America. Sure the outside architecture is a kind of frank lloyd wright meets the fuhrer bunker mashup, but don't be fooled, inside this place is a wonderland. Parking? Yeah they got parking. Free parking for days. The spots right by the door are really popular but there is no reason not to park a bit farther out and use thy legs a bit. There is also a drive thru (no really) for those super cold wintry days when you just can't deal. It's a massive two stories of books (yeah and dvd's,cd's, games for various platforms, magazines, newspapers and every other kind of media imaginable) not counting the basement archival space-which isn't open to the public unless there is a tornado or a book sale (so far never at the same time). The upstairs contains a separated teen section and the technology which here means hundreds (I'm not exaggerating. There are literally hundreds of computers) of internet access computers and about twenty non internet computers loaded with word/excel/whatever you need to work on a paper for hours and hours. There are comfy chairs, tables and desks everywhere. There are study rooms. There are printers, fax machines, scanners and even a typewriter should you need one.The children's section has a fantasy story land (again I'm totally not exaggerating.) along with a virtual aquarium ,and there is a cafe for light snacks, drinks and whatnot. Community programs? You bet they have community programs. Sure the usual reading time for children, but also basic tech classes, foreign language classes, baking, decorating, cryptography, movie screenings, and oh yeah they have book clubs as well. The staff are outstanding, they can do interlibrary (with the whole Chicago metropolitan area to draw upon) loans in the off chance that there isn't what you need at this branch. Got a fine? They do fine amnesties twice a year. All in all this is a perfect place to lose yourself in for as long as you want-for free. Of all the public libraries I have been to (and I have been to a LOT!), this is one of my favorites. They are cool about non-Schaumburgians checking out materials as long as you have an ID and library card from your hometown. The kids section is phenomenal! The play area makes me wish I was 6 years old again, and the fact that it is separated from the rest of the library encourages everyone to have a good time without annoying those looking for a quieter library experience. The AV area is great too.. so many books on CD and DVDs to choose from. The library is peppered with comfy chairs and nooks to read in, and the downstairs cafe makes this a nice place to meet up with friends. read more

Do you have "midterms" coming up?? Finals? tests? quizzes? This is the place to go study! I went here for the first time this passed weekend to study for my chemistry test and got more than I would have gotten done if I went to Panera or a bookstore. It is very convenient, there are areas of study all over the place, there are sections where you can talk and then there are completely silent sections where you can get work done. Plus, if you have the nom nom munchies going on, there's a coffee/snack shop on the first floor ps. if you're filipino, there's a filipino menu on the side! if you're looking for a shamrock shake, since mcd's doesn't have great ones anymore, this place has it year round! Oh and the bathrooms NIIIIIIICE! Way more than I would have expected from a library, and there's a fire place! Cozy, quiet, and a place to get it done (get work done that is) or just to read/check out a book, this is the place to go read more
