We had a wonderful dining experience at Schilling from the moment we walked in! The space is quaint and beautiful, resembling an Austrian chalet. The service is warm and friendly. We opted for the Restaurant Week menu - what a deal! $45 for 3 courses. We both started with the Schilling salad which was delicious! I could eat it every day. For our entrees, we both opted for the Wiener Schnitzel (pork), which came with one of my favorite things of the evening: this incredible dill cucumber salad! The schnitzel was excellent (although a huge portion!) It also came with lingonberry jam and potato salad! Finally, we both tried the chocolate dessert as well as the apple strudel and while both were great, the strudel truly stole the show! Came for a team lunch with 9 people. The service and food were impeccable. This restaurant is quite small and it looked like only 2 people were working during lunch out front but our orders for apps and entrees were taken quickly. The schnitzel and the spaetzle were large portions. Schnitzel was crispy and the Cucumber Dill Salad, Potato Salad, Lingonberry jam were great accompaniments. The spaetzel was creamy and rich! Visited at lunch time for the NYC Restaurant Week menu. It was $30 for an appetizer and entree. It was relatively empty when I arrived so I was seated right away. Waitress was really nice and served me really well throughout the visit - I didn't find myself sitting around waiting on her, which I appreciated. The restaurant itself is lovely, it's nice but not too fancy. I only had tea, but I am curious about their happy hour/cocktails. For my meal, I started with the broccolini which was fried in a tempura batter. From a technical standpoint, the dish was made really well and I liked the bits of seasoning sprinkled. I, however, don't think broccolini has strong enough of a flavor on its own to work with this dish. I found myself searching for some sort of flavor to hold on to throughout. They may need to use a different sauce, cause I think the one offered was too neutral. I followed it up with a pork Wiener Schnitzel. The waitress told me that's more traditional than chicken. It was fine. The three sides it came with added a lot, especially in terms of sour and sweet which I think were necessary additions. My experience was fine. I unfortunately didn't find it very exciting but if you prefer that, I do think this is a nice restaurant. read more

Coming here was like going to a first date with low expectations and being pleasantly surprised by how....good....everything turns out to be. First, could this spot be any cuter? The cuteness is all the more noticeable because this restaurant is in a forgettable, nondescript slice of FiDi. Blink and you'll miss it. Second, the food delivered. Both our Heirloom Tomatoes (farm fresh with huge portions and tasty homemade dressing) and the Spätzle (creamy and comforting) were scrumptious. Having just visited Germany again earlier this year, I was craving some good Deutsch carbs, and I loved what Schilling did. Then, there's the Happy Hour wine, which at $8/glass is too good a deal to pass up in these inflationary times. Esp. when the wines on offer come from the German-speaking parts of the world. The appetizer I chose was the heirloom tomatoes. This was delicious. They brought it out and poured the vinaigrette. It was too much for me. Overpowered the dish for me. The flavors were on point. The entree was chicken Wiener schnitzel. Love that you can choose between pork and chicken!!! The thinnest and juiciest chicken I've had in awhile. Both had good seasoning. I couldn't have either restaurant week desserts because of my allergies. Both had nuts!!! They offered vanilla ice cream which was a perfect ending to the meal. Super cute restaurant in a converted garage. There's no sign, but when you enter, you discover an elegant dining room with rustic decor. We were lucky to walk in with a big party spur of the moment, before attending a show nearby. Hearty, delicious food with a plethora of vegetarian options. Portions are generous. Service is very welcoming and efficient. We enjoyed a special of potato leek soup with cheesy bread. Crispy skinned salmon main course was my favorite thing -- delicious, balanced plate. Popped in on a chilly night for some schnitzel and it was the perfect little meal. I opted for the pork. It was crunchy and crisp and had great flavor. The light acidic salad was a nice compliment to the dish. I also loved the trio of sides that paired well with the schnitzel; berry sauce, potato salad and cucumber dill salad. I also randomly decided to get the farmers cheese which didn't have much flavor aside from the toppings. I'd skip this dish. I still loved my meal and the experience. A hidden gem in Fi-Di that must be explored if you are interested in trying a new cuisine outside the usual NYC Italian, French or Japanese styles, why not go Austrian! The Schnitzel is calling, and it truly delicious being lightly breaded, pounded thin, and generous portions to enjoy dinner with. The salads were fresh and the cheese which came out as an appetizer was definetly very different, a mild brown cheese. The buttnernut squash was also delicious and the bread was drizzled nicely in oil. The ambience gets pretty tight, so prepare to be intimate if you are a party of two, or if you have a big party they have a long table where everyone can sit, very european. All together, a nice spot for dinner and I give it 4 stars. read more

So...this is a sad report that I don't enjoy sharing. I've enjoyed Schilling many times over the past decade. Well executed simple Austrian/German food (at a premium) has been enjoyed by my friends & myself here for some time. However... things appear to have changed... They offered a holiday special "dry aged Long Island Duck menu". I bit the bait. The duck was presented whole. I remarked "the skin looks quite dark?" The server didn't reply & took it back to the kitchen for slicing & RE-presentation. We were served duck meatballs that I'd best describe as Thanksgiving style? There were two, each atop mashed butternut squash & surrounded by cranberry sauce & gravy. ‍. The 4 sides were then delivered with the sliced duck. Poached celeriac overpowered by a sour cream sauce, spaetzle in a whole grain mustard sauce, sautéed collards (way over salted) dressed with a vinaigrette and an avocado topped green salad with freshly cut slices of radishes rounded out the 4 sides. As you can see from the photographs, the dry aged Long Island duck was cooked too hot & fast. The skin blackened & the fat beneath it never had a chance to render properly. The duck breast flesh was tender & moist but the skin was clearly burnt & the fat was not only evident but unappetizing. The waitress inquired about our meal. We let her know we were disappointed & didn't enjoy the duck. She removed it. When she returned she informed us the chef said "he thought it looked right" and would we like a different main instead. My wife declined but I opted for the Wiener schnitzel. The schnitzel was excellent. Crispy & unctuous. However, we were billed $85 pp ($170) for the duck "experience" & ate Wiener schnitzel ($25) for supper which we were not billed for. The duck was kept by the kitchen (they didn't ask if we wanted to take it but we PAID for it). We took the celeriac salad & green salad with avocado & remaining schnitzel. The creme filled napoleon was quite wonderful. We were gifted two limoncello shots along with our bill that included everything but the schnitzel & limoncellos. We left knowing we won't return. $200 for what we had could & will go further elsewhere. I miss the Schilling we used to know. I also miss the Blaue Gans Austrian restaurant on Duane (Kurt Guttenbruner still of Wallsé is deeply missed). read more

What a delightful restaurant addition to the financial district! This hidden gem is a great spot for delicious food and drinks. To drink, the Elder Rot is a refreshing and not too sweet cocktail that comes with a nice grape bundle so you can convince yourself you're being healthy by you getting some fruit in. Portions here are wonderful for the price, and I definitely recommend trying a few dishes. For starters, the tempura fried broccolini is a winner in my book, and the honey nut squash with fresh burrata is a lovely, sweet and savory-ish that tastes very fresh and served with warm buttered bread. Yum! I had the Spatzel for my entrée, which is tasty but I admit could've used a little bit more salt and spices. I think my favorite dish of the evening was the side of brussels sprouts, which were perfectly cooked and drenched in a delicious, sweet and tangy sauce. I couldn't get enough of these! The service was wonderful. Our waitress was happy to get us seated even though we arrived a little bit before they had opened, and was very attentive to our needs. This is a great place to go to after work and/or to catch up with a friend! The ambiance is really cozy and warm and super inviting. The hostess was not as kind to us as the ambiance but it's ok- I understand that you have reservations but there were seats empty for 1+ hour and instead of seating us she just didn't offer any help so we just sat at the bar to get some drinks. Thankfully the bartender was so nice and I enjoyed my company and there. I asked him for a table and he talked to another waitress to get us a seat at the communal table (which was empty for a while) and we found out it was open all along. We then had dinner and had a great time through the night here as their drinks are really tasty but strong in alcohol content! Beware of drinking too much haha. The garden of eden cocktail was so good I had to order another and another. I ordered the internacional to begin with since I love green chartreuse but the garden of Eden was just so simple and easy to drink I would highly recommend that one. For food I had the Viennese chicken sandwich and my party had the cream of broccoli soup. The food was not bad and I really enjoyed the mustard more than anything actually since it's Austrian-Mediterranean food and they do an amazing job with the mustard. I would definitely come back here again and order something else with my new favorite drink. I guess the point of this story is to reserve in advance if you want a better experience with getting a table! read more

***3 1/2 stars*** Schilling has been on my radar for a few months, and somehow manages to be off the beaten path while being only a block or two from the 9/11 Memorial area (part of that is because it's on a street with limited car traffic and is submerged by a lot of construction/scaffolding right now). My Skipper and I came by for lunch yesterday a little after 1pm. Despite its subtle location and some atrocious weather (rain in the 40s is my least favorite of all time), the place was surprisingly hopping, with more than half the tables occupied. The interior space is adorable, and we were both fans. There's a lot of barn-like wood, and the Skipper noted a very cool ceiling situation - it has slated boards with lighting underneath them, so it looks like there's someone up in the attic. Not sure I've seen that before. And while this is definitely not the kind of place that promotes its bar area above the more formal sit-down crowd, it's also very pleasant to look at. It reminded me almost of a manger. I'd studied the menu pretty intently beforehand and settled on the Spätzle ($25) as my entree. Delicious. I was a little apprehensive about the inclusion of broccoli rabe but it didn't deter from the dish. I loved how cheesy it was; it was almost like having an edgy/exotic mac and cheese. The texture was excellent - the fried onions on top give it a nice crunch, and I think the Spätzle overall would have been almost too squishy without it. Nice touch. And despite appearances, this wasn't a giant meal; the skillet it was served in was very shallow, so I could have eaten the entire thing easily. We ran into an issue though when we tried to order drinks. Schilling should definitely fix this on their website (their social media pages are clearer), but the menu page on there indicates that on Fridays and Saturdays, the wine is half off. It turns out that what they actually mean is that the wine is half off IF you buy an entire bottle; it doesn't apply to glasses. That surprised both of us, especially since by the glass, this place is very overpriced. Even in this neighborhood, it's not hard to find a decent glass of wine for $11 or $12 (and often cheaper than that). However, Schilling charges around $16 for theirs. Once we realized that there weren't discounts for the glasses of wine, we shifted our focus to the cocktails, which were also overpriced. There's no way you're getting me to purchase a cocktail for over $20 unless it's an establishment that's exclusively selling itself as a high-end mixology place; this is a restaurant, and there were several drinks on the menu that were $22 or so. Since the wine was so expensive though, it wasn't hard to justify paying $18 for their cheapest cocktails on the menu. That turned out to be moot though - the waitress apologetically told us the specialty cocktails weren't available until dinnertime. It wasn't clear if that was simply part of the business model or the bartender called out, but that was disappointing. The service was honestly mediocre. Some of it could have been chalked up to inexperience and/or cultural differences, but our interactions with the waitress were very uneven. She initially lingered at our table for a noticeably long time while we were still looking over the menu (which is awkward but not really a negative, per se; once you know what you're getting, you want to relay the order as soon as you can), but then would disappear for long stretches when we were looking for the check and for my card to be picked up. Part of that was because she was the only one working the front, handling probably six to seven tables, I'd guess, but the two times her absence was significantly felt? She was just hanging out behind the bar on her phone. I literally had to walk around the bar to personally hand her my credit card. Again, if we were waiting for a long time because she was overwhelmed with her tables, that would be one thing, but that's just lazy and inattentive service and hampered the experience. That was unfortunate because solely based on the food, this was very positive. I'd also mention as an aside that my Skipper was a bit uncomfortable throughout the meal. She was seated on the booth side, which is on the left when you come in from the street. There was a noticeable cold draft coming in from in-between the back and bottom of the cushioning, which I tested out as we got up to leave. Hopefully they get that insulated before it gets really cold. I'm glad I tried this one but the solid food can't ultimately make up for the price point and substandard service. read more

This restaurant feels squarely meh to me. I came here for restaurant week where they have a $45 prix fixe menu. There are about 3 options each for appetizer, entree, and dessert. We tried the heirloom tomatoes, fried green tomatoes, the noodle dish, the Wiener schnitzel, apple strudel, and chocolate cake. The food tasted great -- the serving size was good for the price and the flavor was on point for most of the dishes. However, the prices are where I get hung up. On their regular menu, an entree can run you $30+. That feels incredibly too high considering what you're ordering. Not to mention, cocktails are $18+ and most wines are $18+ for a very modest pour that wasn't even 5oz. Those prices are just too much to actually consider visiting this place again. I was excited to see this place on restaurant week as I've wanted to try it for a while and it was near my office. I went in after work when they were opening. I sat at the bar, ordered a glass of happy hour wine and also asked for the RW menu but they said it wasn't until this week. I showed them the banner that came up on their site saying it began the day before I came and they couldn't understand what happened. Since they weren't ready in the system they couldn't give me the meal but they were kind enough to comp me the appetizer of the cherry and gold coast tomatoes. I went for the Spatzle instead of the schnitzel I really wanted because it was pricey. The tomato appetizer was absolutely amazing especially with the charred bread to dip in the juices. This was perfect as the spatzle was extremely rich. The bartender and the lady I assume was a manager were so extremely kind and apologetic about what happened. I will definitely be back here to try some more dishes as I was very pleased not only with the food but the hospitality and charming decor. read more

I was here with several others. The service overall was friendly albeit a bit pushy. As they oddly don't have Grüner Veltliner, I went with their dry Riesling which was good though the beer selection is a bit disappointing with two generic Austrian beers and Radebeger and Hoffbrau which I'm not the biggest fan of. The menu also has some interesting spelling issues at least online which is odd for a fancy place such as "carraway" and "carmelized" which should probably be fixed. Appetizers Frikkadellen: Pan-fried Austrian Veal and Pork Meatballs, with Braised Sunchokes, Green Onions and Mushroom Gravy. There were four big meatballs meaning that this appetizer can easily be shared and the mushroom gravy was also quite good. This dish is also found in the Netherlands apparently and if it's this good here, I am not surprised. Warm Honeynut Squash: Lightly Smoked, Local Burrata, Whiskey-Brown Sugar Agrodolce, Caraway Streusel ​I was surprised to find such a good vegetarian dish here at an Austrian spot. The burrata went well and the bottom part just mixed in with everything. This was an excellent hearty dish and I would also recommend it. Smoked trout tartare: Apple, Dill, Horseradish, Pumpernickel​ This was the only disappointing dish of the evening. The smoked trout completely overpowered everything else was mixed in there with no help from the other ingredients. The portion size was fine though I wish we got the broccolini instead. Mains: Homemade Spätzle: Rutabaga, Caramelized Broccoli Rabe, Farmhouse Cheddar More specifically Käsespätzle due to the cheese, this was a good version of this classic. The portion size was big enough to share with others though this is expected due to how rich the dish was anyway. I would almost recommend ordering this and splitting it along with their excellent appetizers. Wiener Schnitzel: Heritage Pork or Organic Chicken, Cucumber Dill Salad, Potato Salad, Lingonberry. We got one of each and I can't exactly remember which one I liked more but both were good. My only complaint is that the sides that come with said schnitzel are puny compared to the dish. Käsekrainer: Austrian Style Cheese Sausage, Kartoffelschmarrn (hash browns,) White Cabbage Salad, Mustard. As with the other dishes this was very rich and quite tasty. The sausage had a nice texture and flavor from the cheese and the stuff that came with it was also good though it didn't exactly help the richness. The massive piece of dried cheese on top was interesting and also tasty. Desserts: Apple strudel: Walnuts, Vanilla Sauce, Homemade Ice Cream, Whipped Cream Outside of a tiny portion, this was an excellent strudel with a great texture. I'm personally used to having raisins in apfelstrudel but this might be a German thing more than in Austria. The ice cream was also very good. Viennese Chocolate Souffle: Homemade Ice Cream, Whipped Cream This was a good souffle; not too bitter or too rich. I would also recommend it perhaps more as the tiny portion is a bit more worth it with this dish as it's a lot richer. Coming with the same accompaniments as the strudel, the sides were yet again good. Even though the prices are pretty high, the food here is definitely a lot more worth it compared to a lot of the other places in the surrounding neighborhood. Sure the sides that come with the dish are tiny as are the desserts but overall the food is worth it. I wouldn't expect massive portions around this area. This was a very good Austrian spot and pretty comparable to the food I had there and in Germany. read more

I'm back! I never left because it's one of my frequent neighborhood eats. I'm just genuinely here to review this season's dishes, as they rotate. I'm just late to the party. I enjoy Saturday supper (it's kinda like stewed beef? I think it's called tafflespitz) and the crispy asparagus (good crisp, but the condiments made in house are really always the star of the show here. I need that aoli on every sandwich I ever eat. Every vegetable I ever consume. Except fries, for that we do curry ketchup but I digress) & blah blah everything was good and all but that's not actually why I'm here. CAN WE DISCUSS THE SEASONAL DESSERTS?! The Napoleon, perfect flakiness. But not my thing. Very photogenic. In its defense, I have not found a Napoleon I like. Located on a quiet street in FiDi, you would only ever know Schilling existed if you lived in the area or if you read about it somewhere. It's a small and charming restaurant that feels very different from the other restaurants in the area, which tend to be more flashy. When we arrived for our Friday 6pm reservation, the dinner rush had not yet arrived, so we were able to be seated and enjoy some quiet conversation. The service was excellent. After ordering my drink (Paper Plane, $15), which I found to be too tart. When the waitress noticed I gave my drink to my friend, she was really sweet and repeated multiple times that she could bring it back and I could order something different. My friend liked the drink, so we didn't send it back, but her gesture was very much appreciated. I ordered the Westside ($15) which was similar to a mojito, which was more up my alley. We shared the white asparagus appetizer (small, $19), which was so unique and tasty. Loved everything about the Schilling! I walk by it everyday and for the most part since I moved to The neighborhood, it was closed. It finally opened recently and my boyfriend and I went in one rainy evening. First of all, the ambiance walking up is so romantic and inviting. It's got the modern, rustic, chic vibes...not to mention a pretty funky playlist (hello Curtis Mayfield) and fresh flowers on each table. We went in and picked a table near the open garage door to be partial outdoor. The staff was very friendly, spacing was observed and everyone worse masks. I ordered the chicken schnitzel and the bf ordered the kaesekrainer. The chicken schnitzel was crispy and thin cut and soooo delicious. The cheese sausage so so juicy with the FA cabbage. The Sunday dessert was also something different, and we thought there was a taste of liquor in it...can't quite put my finger on it, but it was both light and rich in taste. Had an amazing meal at a Michelin starred chef's restaurant in the Financial District! We had amazing looking drinks which were the Hugo Ahumado and the Mary's Secret. I loved the cinnamon apple flavor of Mary's Secret. For appetizers we tried the Frikadellen, the Smoked Trout Rilettes, and the Winter Greens. The salad was my favorite and my boyfriend really enjoyed the trout. For our entrees we had the Wiener Schnitzel which was massive and came with cucumber dill salad, potato salad, and lingonberry. We also had the Spätzle and the Crispy Brussel Sprouts. I absolutely loved the schnitzel and the brussel sprouts, and my boyfriend loved the Spätzle. For dessert drinks we had The Royal Nussbaum and the Brandy Maximillian. Both were definitely strong, but delicious! At the tip of Manhattan lies the Schilling Restaurant, home of the best Wiener schnitzel I've had outside Vienna, Austria. I got the pork Wiener schnitzel and an order of the golden tomatoes. The resort of the table for spaetzl, fries and crispy Brussels sprouts. All yummy and filling. The Wiener schnitzel is cut thin, lightly breaded, not overly fried and not greasy at all. Schilling is the most cozy cute spot down in FiDi. My friend and I went to wine Wednesday to try several Austrian wines & their extensive menu - boy were we impressed! I know I will spend several weeks thinking back to how delicious the schnitzel & Apple strudel were. Truly outstanding. Schnitzèl was too tough to eat. Couldn't chew it or even cut it with a knife; potato salad was swimming in vinegar. Unfortunately, both my money and the food ended up in the garbage. read more

We had brunch at Schilling today and it was wonderful! First, outstanding service by Maeve, attentive and efficient and she's super nice as well. We went for the asparagus tasting menu and it was just fabulous. We had two kinds of asparagus, both were excellent. We also shared the hash browns and added burgers to the meal. Burgers are gorgeous and cooked perfectly to order. Great fries accompanied the burgers. Beautiful place, quiet and welcoming. We'll be going back soon! read more

Came here for a big work event, so the space was a bit tight. Regardless, the place is well decorated with a rustic, chic atmosphere. Despite the large tables, service was prompt and friendly, and servers were quick to come by for drink orders. The fried green tomato's and chocolate soufflé were amazing. I may skip out on the seafood next time as the salmon and trout we got were a bit fishy, but the schnitzel had a good flavor and crisp. read more

Stopped in for lunch to try the restaurant week menu and was blown away. The atmosphere was cozy and the service was friendly. My boyfriend and I both tried the sweet corn bisque and the fried green tomatoes. I underestimated how much I would enjoy the bisque. It's creamy and full of wonderful flavors. For our mains, we had the pork wiener schnitzel and the spatzle. The star of the schnitzel was the potato salad that accompanied it. Holy moly- this ain't your Aunt Barbara's potato salad. The portions are huge and had to take half of it away. Even after resting in a hotel mini fridge for a night, my boyfriend and I couldn't stop eating the cold leftovers.
