As of April 2026 they use the new EES system making international travel easier and faster. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in the airport which is a plus especially if you arrive early or have a long layover.

The airport is gigantic. Flying in from a European country and getting your luggage and then out felt like it took nearly as long as flying in from the US and having to go through customs. The walk to the baggage claim from the FinnAir terminal was incredibly long and the baggage took what felt like forever. There are tons of restaurants and shops here. Unfortunately if you need to eat gluten-free, this airport really doesn't have options. They do sell the cheese that is for sale at all the gift shops around Netherlands here after security and at a cheaper price than many tourist shops and even the cheese factory itself in Volendam. Security and immigration are definitely a hassle here with their questions. Be prepared for Dutch bluntness. You have to be blunt right back with them. I had a new in box water filter in my carry-on because I went to a remote cabin in Finland for a week. Security tried to give me a hard time about why I had a water filter as if that's somehow contraband. Just be very direct to the point it comes across as rude (for Americans) when responding. I had a mini mental hair clip the size of my thumb print go off and I had to get a pat down and they almost made me take it out of my hair to get scanned. Some issue with the new European passport and fingerprint scan thing (EES) flagged me so I had to talk to immigration. Naturally the line for everyone who got flagged happened to be the immigration officer trainee line so it took 3-4x as long as the other immigration officer lines because staff was walking the trainees through what to ask and type. I was seriously worried I'd miss my flight. My husband didn't get flagged and had time to order food and eat it at a restaurant downstairs in the terminal, that's how long a passport check after security took. Flying in isn't bad but omg flying out is a hassle and you'll need to give yourself extra time with the new EES system implementation. Latest visit: June 2026

We waited about half an hour and were still three cars back when we decided we'd rather pay 22 euros a day for street parking in front of our hotel. Who knows when the next 4 cars would leave allowing us to park. In 90 degree heat, I'll take convenience over price. If you do decide to wait, they apparently give you tickets for the bus/tram/train to get you to your destination in the centrum. Sounds like a great concept when the lot isn't full. We didn't get so lucky this time.

This is a huge parking garage near the Elandsgracht. It has to be one of the least attractive…read morebuildings in the area. It's too bad it's not underground. With all that it's still a landmark in a way. Whenever my flight is near the city I can easily see where my home is based on this monstrosity. Underneath is the Waterkant bar and also a bus stop for the Connexion buses. It's not cheap to park here, nearly 500€ per month on the monthly program.

Parking rates are between € 1.60 - € 2.75 for every 15 minutes, so can generally cost between € 6.4 and € 11 per hour, which seemed crazy for me, even for such a good location, as the car park wasn't too clean and was unstaffed. The one positive about charging for 15 minutes at a time, rather than hourly, is you could end up paying less, if you just go over the time by a couple of minutes, but the rates are so expensive anyway, it feels like you won't be saving much at all. They have public toilets here, but they come at an additional cost whether you are using the car park or not. I can totally understand them wanting to make some money out of tourists not using the car park, and keeping them out of the toilets, but if you're using the car park, you're basically paying twice. I did use the toilets and was unimpressed at having to pay € 1 to enter a dirty toilet, which was cash-only, to make matters worse they only had freezing cold running water, it felt like washing my hands with a bunch of ice cubes! 2* - Straight-forward and easy-to-follow car-park in a good location, but high prices, poor cleanliness and lack of staff pretty much make it an advertisement to use public transit.

INDEED: Mercure Hotel staff tried to prevent our leaving our own suitcases in our own family room, using nasty threats against us, even after we had a serious accident at Schiphol as well. BEWARE THESE RUDE, UNCARING HOTEL STAFF -- THEY ABUSED US GUESTS! THE MERCURE HOTEL AT SCHIPHOL AIRPORT IS TOTALLY UNTRUSTWORTHY!
