Today it hosts fine dining, a gift shop, and events. We stopped in for an hour to enjoy some drinks and appetizers. The host graciously allowed our party of 8 to put together some tables. The weather was raining so not many guests were coming for the view. Enjoyed some beer and a couple of pick plates. This host was friendly and the ambiance was spectacular.

It is the largest and one of the most magnificent castle ruins on the Rhine. The parking is available at the castle site for .50 euro per hour. You'd need about two hours if you tour the castle for 5 euro per adult. Limited English tour is available, but you can always go on a self-guided tour (without a tunnel part). You can use your imagination to see yourself in the Middle Ages, explore fortifications, towering towers and halls and passageways cut into the rock. The importance of the fortress in military as well as cultural area is clearly presented to you in the museum of local history in the former chapel. If you are limited with time you can spend here, you can forego with the exploration of the ruin inside, and enjoy an excellent view of the Rhine from a vantage point--I'd give about 30 minutes to accomplish this with a quick visit to the gift shop.

The set up lets you wonder around with a map and you're able to explore the castle at your own pace. There aren't many items behind glass which really surprised me, it but made the experience much more authentic. The hotel was great, the breakfast in particular! The room was very modern and comfortable, the only thing that I would change would have been the pillows, they where almost too puffy. The only other down-side I can think of would be that over the summer there isn't any AC to cool down the room.

Just grab some stuff from the grocery store before you go and don't forget champagne and plastic cups which makes anyplace special. If you have walked here or taken the nerobergbahn, you will see a few taxis to take to the bottom of the mountain or ask the restaurant to call a taxi for you. Better yet, do as I did and walk to the bottom - it didn't take long at all and the area real estate is nice to see.

Dinner at the bistro had very pleasant staff but i wasn't a huge fan of the food itself, and it had awesome views from the windows. museum was interesting, and had an awesome view from the very top. stairs are very steep and weathered, especially coming down so be careful. Lots to explore. A garden only for people staying that was super pleasant with a little pond, trails, and many indoor huts to use for free (you just walk in) and some of them had AWESOME views. Best views for a beer break, and this almost seemed like an "accidental surprise" to us, as we didn't know exactly what was located at the top of the hill. I now understand when people say, "you're on the road to Stahleck" as you literally begin the…read moreascent hiking up the mountain (literally) to get to Stahleck Castle. We happened to be in Bacharach for the Game of Thrones Tourney, so we decided to make the journey to see the castle for ourselves. The castle is truly the focal point of the whole town; even upon arrival from the train station, Stahleck is standing proudly to greet you. Looking at the signs pointing to the stairs, I thought, how hard could this really be? We're two average fit Americans; we'll be fine! Well! We were! Make to bring some good hiking shoes with some good traction, and a good camera to take in some of the amazing scenery! The first initial steps up the mountain have a sturdy railing and sturdy wooden steps - nice and easy. But, as you go higher, the steps go away, and you're walking on a dirt path that I wouldn't dare walk on if it was covered in snow. Making it to the top is definitely worth it, and the view is really impressive of all of Bacharach. We should've gotten a beer or something to celebrate making it to the top, but it was getting dark rather quickly, so we had to make our way back down again. Go inside and get a coffee or hot chocolate before heading back to town!
