Loved making this day trip out to see this castle. The tour was very nice and informative. When you get to the castle be prepared to either walk up the road to get to the castle or you can pay for horse drawn buggy. If you're walking watch out for the horse . Also, make sure you book in advance as this place was pretty busy (pre Covid). Once you are done with the tour you can walk around the surrounding area and do some hiking. This is a nice day trip to make if you're in Munich and highly suggest it. read more

What a great day and adventure! You are able to see the reasons Disney Castles are based off of this place right away. It made me feel transported back to the time of these Kings and Queens. Learning about Ludwig II and the sketchy way that he passed was all part of the lore. The views are amazing and the town you go through to get there had all you need. The walk up to the castle can be tough for those that do not like a little work out. I walked and was fine. It did not seem worth it waiting for the horse carriage. The bus tour to the place was part of the fun. Easy to meet them in Munich and then take the trip. read more

I don't know. I mean I get why people want to come here. Disney, castle, blah blah blah. And believe me, I love castles but this one left me pretty underwhelmed. And it wasn't the renovation. The scaffolding was only at the front and didn't impede on the whole structure. It's just... I don't know, I wanted more magic. Everyone in reviews tells you how magical it is. How majestic and gorgeous. The Instagram pictures inundated my feed with it's glory. It's a grey building built on a hill with some interesting turrets with huge groups of Chinese tourists screaming the whole time. All I can say is do your research and go with your gut. If I could do it all again, I might choose another of Bavaria's amazing vistas. read more

This is unforgettable! Wear comode table shoes and be ready for different climates. If the weather is snowing or icy, the bus will not be running and creates a long line for the carriages. Be ready for a steady climb up, though it can be done at a casual pace if plenty of time to make it for the time on the ticket. Don't forget the tickets have a time and after five minutes there is no entrance. You'll have to return. Part of the way up to the castle there is a vendor with donuts and fried cheese, good on cold days, but do plan to have a snack. The buses run regularly to and from the train station making it easy to arrive and depart. Lines tend to move quickly at the ticket counter, but found already having a reservation to be convenient. The only downside is not being able to take pictures, it is beautiful and unforgettable. Don't be afraid of stairs, because there are plenty. read more

When you see it up on the side of the mountain it looks quite small, but don't be fooled. The castle truly is large and beautiful in- and outside, and I can see why it was an inspiration for Walt Disney. Your tour time is given to you when you purchase your ticket, and you have the option of a guided tour in English or German depending on your timing. Tour groups are VERY BIG, which is unfortunate, and the next tour is right on your heels. That said, the castle rooms are beautiful and the views are stunning. Is it worth the money? I think so. Other tips: while you can book a ticket online in advance, you can't do it more than 3 days before your visit. Your reservation must also be before 3pm local time the day before your planned visit. If you miss that window, you can show up the day of and hope for a good time slot. If you're driving, get there early and be sure to park at parking lot 4 (P4) since it's closest to the ticket office. Be sure to also purchase a round trip bus ticket up to the castle if you'd rather not hike up/down the mountain or pay for a horse carriage ride. Give yourself some time to get up top since you'll want to take photos while you wait for your group to be called. Also, if you're visiting during winter, note that Mary's Bridge will be closed due to snow and ice. If you choose to also visit Hohenschwangau Castle, you'll have to do this one first. If you need to kill time in between, the local sit down restaurants are always packed, so grab a coffee or a drink at the Ameron Resort & Spa's bar instead. read more

What can you say that would go it justice? It's every bit as magnificent in person as in the pictures. First of all, be prepared for EXERCISE, because, even if you take the horse-drawn wagon up (which I HIGHLY recommend), you're still going to do a lot of climbing. We did walk in & back out from our hotel (see Hotel Schwansee) but we logged 8.6 miles and 47 flights worth of climbing... but it's worth every step. There's a good number of people on each tour (even during off season) but we didn't feel like we missed anything and our guide was very good. Don't leave without making the extra walk to Mary's Bridge (Marianplatz) - the view is incredible and the sound of the waterfall just adds to the charm. read more

An absolutely beautiful castle that is a must visit just remember to get your tickets in advance if you want to enter it as they do sell out. I went via a tour group so the tickets inside where included and it was pretty amazing to visit inside but outside is where all the beauty is at. When you go to the bridge behind the castle to get those million dollar shots just expect to wait on a line since the bridge is narrow and everyone wants to take amazing photos up there. The does move at least fairly fast so your not feeling restless there. read more

This place is literally out of a fairy tale and well worth the effort to get here! I took a tour from Munich that also included a stop in nearby Oberammergau. However, the highlight of the tour was obviously Neuschwanstein - if you can, you need to go to the top of the hill to the bridge that spans the canyon for the picture-perfect view you see on all of the postcards. It is absolutely breathtaking! With the tour, tickets to the castle were included, so that made things much easier. The tour of the castle is short but also well worth it. There are a lot of great elements to the castle interior that you won't get to see elsewhere. Great site to see and a must see on any trip to Bavaria! Worth the time and $ to see both castles.

Of all the places in Germany we knew we wanted to see - this castle was a must. After all, it's the real life castle all the Disney castles are based upon. There are many ways to get here. A tour group. Train and bus. But in the end we rented a car for the day and drove from Munich so we wouldn't be rushed. Driving in Germany is a breeze and they are great drivers. No stress and it was easy to find with GPS. We barely made it in time to see both - nabbing the last tour of the day for Neuschwanstein - but we made it! You wait for your allotted time to tour the castle and then are provided with a self-audio tour in your chosen language to put up to your ear (bring your own headphones). You are free to roam around the grounds and explore until your tour time. There is a bridge and there are some trails that have stunning views if you have the time. We were there during the winter (on Thanksgiving day 2017 actually) and so it wasn't overly crowded - but apparently during the summer it gets insane with hours-long waits to get tickets and tours selling out. You can buy tickets in advance online (we didn't) and you should if you are going during the main tour season because we just got lucky. It's normally sold out in advance for days/weeks during the summer or you'll wait for a few hours in line the day of. Last tours are typically around 3pm or so and they give you tickets for 1.5-2 hours before and you MUST be ready to enter when your allotted time pops up on the screen. The castle itself is at the top of a pretty high and steep hill. You can ride a bus to the top which is another $2 or so - it's not included in your tour price. It stops running about 20 minutes after the last day's tour ends. If you miss it you'll have to walk the 20 minutes or so to the bottom. Parking was also $7. This castle is STUNNING outside - it's also stunning inside but for me - the outside was the real draw. I'm glad I got to see the inside of this castle - the decor, the grotto, and learn a little more about the "mad king". read more

The Schloss Neuschwanstein is a beautiful castle. It is well known for being Walt Disney's inspiration for Cinderella's Castle. You need a ticket in order to go through a guided tour so it is smart to order your tickets ahead of time. Tour times are very strict and if you just show up with plans to purchase tickets you will most likely have to wait for hours to get in. Once you pick up your tickets it will take about twenty minutes walking uphill to get to the castle from the road. You can rent a carriage ride if you do not want to walk. The scenery up the hill is beautiful and the trees help keep you cool. Along the way you will pass by a gift shop and opportunities to grab a drink and a snack. The tours are given in German and English. Before the tour you are asked not to take photos of the interior. It's an honor system that the majority of people appear to respect. The tour guides are loaded with information that is scripted but enjoyable. I was surprised by how well kept and clean the castle is. The rooms still have the original furniture and paintings on the walls. The tour took about an hour and left most of us wanting to see more. read more

I was excited to see this castle after finding out that Walt Disney designed the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland after Neuschwanstein Castle ( and anyone who has visited Disneyland will easily see the resemblance). So, the reason for my 4 Star review is that for right now at least, touring the castle is a bit of a hassle. Online tickets are sold out for weeks. We could have paid for a Day Tour, but that came at a cost - $60.00 each for the tour and $30.00 each for the tickets . Instead, we booked a train ticket from Munich for $15.00 & toured the area without visiting the interior castle. We didn't regret this decision, because we had flexibility with our schedule, and we saved a lot of money. It was somewhat annoying that online tickets weren't available, but yet the day tour companies had them to sell. We wanted to visit Queen Mary's Bridge, but it is closed right now. This castle, built by King Ludwig 1869-1887, IS stunning and we had lovely views of the exterior. We rode by train from Munich to Fussen, and then our train ticket also worked for the shuttle bus ride to Hohenschwangau, where the castle is located. You can't go to Germany (Munich ish) without visiting this castle. Why pass up the opportunity to see the castle that inspired Disney's Cinderella castle??! We ended up booking our transportation via a tour company (Viator) and it was well worth the money. The drive itself to the castle (and two other locations in the package) is a long drive. You also learn about the history of King Ludwig II and his crazy interest that inspiration for the imaginative and definitely over the top decor. The only down side is not being able to take photos inside the castle (like many/most of the palaces and castles you'll visit in Europe). Another plus about going with a tour group is time management. We research going by train and bus to get to the castle, which would already take most of the day. Purchasing your tickets separately and guessing what time you will make the hike up the castle seemed a bit tedious for a vacation excursion. With a tour group, you get an assigned time that correlates with enough time to plan a meal, take scenic photos, and make your scheduled tour time. The castle on the outside is breathtaking. Don't skip Marie's bridge, that's the best view of the castle (right out a children's fairytale). It was very achievable if you pay the minimal fee to ride the bus option and hike down to the castle. Whichever way you chose to get to the castle (hike, bus, or horse carriage), you will still have to walk a good ways, so bring some good walking shoes!! read more

Why 5 stars? Because it was definitely about as majestic as you'd imagine it would be. --- --- --- Review #1800 for me, and I'm using it to write about a super memorable experience! Months ago, when my wife and I were planning a trip to Europe, we knew that we wanted to visit Germany, but were undecided on which city we'd go to. My wife started researching Neuschwanstein, and decided that she was going to make it a required stop on our itinerary. Since Munich was the closest major city to this castle, our decision was made. It was about a 2-hour train ride from Munich, which was enjoyable because we had been walking so much on our trip in Europe, that we were happy to sit down for a while and stare at the mountains out the window. When we arrived, we took a short bus ride on a very crowded bus, and then hopped on another bus to get up to the top of the mountain. We had the option of walking up the mountain, but we elected to spend a few extra bucks to make our lives easier. The best photos of the experience came right at the beginning, as we stepped onto a bridge and saw the castle from afar. If you're afraid of heights, you might not love the bridge - it's crowded and wobbly, but just remember that thousands of people stand on it every day. It is quite high up above the land below, and offers breathtaking views of the castle and the surrounding area. You're not allowed to take photos inside the castle, which is kind of a bummer, but it was interesting to see. It's kind of crazy that they never ended up finishing building this castle, but you do get to see what was finished before the King died. From the outside, you'd never know that it wasn't done, because it looks impeccably nice - almost like they pressure wash it daily. The coolest room inside was the room that the King made to do most of his sitting in - it's all gold. You'll definitely know it when you see it. 1.3 million people come here every year, so expect big crowds, but it was definitely worth the trip from Munich! read more

This will assure that you will get a time slot that fits your travel plans. 2) Same day visit with no reservation means you will wait in line and take a chance as to what time your tour will start. **No photos allowed within the castle. **Best views of the castle is from the Marienfeld Bridge...quite scary if you are afraid of heights. **Ultimate best views of the castle require a small hike up a mountain (follow the trail) and capture that view. This is the famous castle in Bavaria. This is the castle that Walt Disney drew inspiration from for his Sleeping Beauty Castle. There are a ton of Tour Groups available that can take you to Neuschwanstein Castle. Or you can do it yourself by taking a train from Munich or just driving there. The train actually takes longer than traveling by road. I suggest you come without a tour. I did it with a tour group, and I didn't think it was worth it. There is a ton of stuff you can see and do around here, and you don't want to be on a time crunch. Speaking of time crunches, make sure to arrive on time for the Castle tour. Like all of Germany, they run on strict punctuality. If you're 1 minute late, they close the doors and you can't get in. So make sure to arrive 15 minutes before the actual tour starts. The castle tour was short and sweet. No photos are allowed inside. They have this phone thingy they give you so you can hear the tour guide better. I like that technology. The inside of the castle, as you expect, is pretty extravagant. I wish we could take photos inside, but oh well. None of the Ludwig's palaces and castles allowed photos. The walk up to the castle is about 15-20 minutes. So bring your walking shoes. The hike isn't too bad. An average person should be able to do it. If you're too lazy or can't walk up the mountain to go to the castle, you can take a shuttle or a horse carriage. But the wait time could be long, so I suggest you just walk up, unless you're physically unable to. During non-winter months, you also need to go to the Marienbruke. That's where you can get the iconic Castle shot that you see in sooooo many photos. From the Castle to Marienbruke is another 15-20 minute hike. The bridge is popular, and there will be a line to get on. So plan accordingly if you have to get to a castle tour. The bridge closes during winter, so if you want to get on the bridge, and I suggest you do, come during the warmer months. The village beneath the castles is Schwangau. There is a nice lake there. And there's even a Swan at that lake! How appropriate. Schwangau is your typical Bavarian looking village catered towards tourists. Bring very comfortable shoes! You will be going up a large incline for 3/4 mile (if you choose to skip the horse ride) and going up multiple flights of stairs inside Reserve your ticket and skip the 30+ minute wait in line! Reserve 2 days in advance before 3pm Make sure you arrive to the tour area early-you have a 5 minute window to enter your tour. Leave early if you plan on getting to the castle by horse ride (€4.50/person) as the carriages take awhile and there aren't a lot. In my 20 minute walk up the hill not a single carriage ever came by. About 10 people can fit per carriage. I made it up to the tour area in 25 minutes with a bathroom break, no photos and no stopping. The brouchure says 40 minutes and that would be an easy pace Bring headphones so you don't have to hold up the audio guide in order to hear throughout the tour Tour is 35 minutes long but I stayed in the area for nearly 4 hours Stay in the back of your tour group and that way you can go at a slower (but still too fast) pace There's a café after the tour ends, as well as multiple restrooms (free) and 2 gift shops. The café has fountain sodas for €3.30 and sparkling water for €2.20. The cheesecake is a reasonable price, but not that great. Definitely skip the calories. After the tour is completed there will be several things to see still. The first gift shop has postcards for €0.90 each, the second one has postcards for €0.30 with the original stamp. Additionally, there is a café and balcony with great views. The WC that is nearest the parking lots charges €0.50 for entry. Restrooms are kept up fairly well considering how much they are used. No hook for your belongings. There are coin machines in case you only have a €2 coin. Bring cash! Paying for tickets and parking:: You buy your tickets about 3 minutes walk from the parking lot. Go uphill (turn right if by the WC) and continue. On the right you'll (likely) see a huge line waiting outside. The ticket will have a tour number and time. Adults are €13 each, although you can get numerous combination tickets. I would definitely have enough cash on hand, as half of the cash registers today were only accepting cash. I really want to give this place a 3.5 but a 4 will suffice! Such a beautiful castle that wasn't fully complete on the top of a lovely steep hill ... not very pretty if you're taking the EXTREMELY steep but fastest way to walk up route *sigh. But within 20 long huffing and puffing minutes we reached the bridge, I believe it's Marion bridge ?? Or Mary ?? I cannot remember, but once you walk further in towards the other side of the bridge it's less crowded and you can comfortably take your photos of the beautiful castle. Now the castle tour ... one and done. I wouldn't do this again, because you're not allowed to take photos what so ever. Everything is really well preserved. There are millions of people coming through this place a day and it still looks brand new on the inside. Now even if you think you're going to try and sneak pictures they don't have security in every room and there's cameras watching you! read more

Do get the tour tickets early, the wait time is crazzzzzy! Super popular and quite crowded, make sure you have some water with you as you wait in line (snacks would be good too). You can take a bus up to the top to see the view from the side (I'd recommend this so you don't have to hike up too much), and take a horse carriage down if you happen to see one on the way. Quite an interesting experience. This is not too far from Munich, but make sure you buy a flexible train pass so it's easier to catch a different train back if you miss your time! read more

Schloss Neuschwanstein is absolutely incredible (and magical). This historical castle inspired the Disney castle and with good reason- it looks like it came straight out of a fairytale. WHAT TO KNOW: -Make an online reservation through their official website prior to visiting, and complete your payment upon arrival. -Many Yelp/TripAdvisor reviews state that the inside of the castle isn't worth visiting, but my friend and I personally enjoyed learning about the history of the castle. Note that no photography (even with your phones) is allowed in here! The tour is very brief. -The best and most popular spot to photograph the castle is from Marienbrücke Bridge. After getting dropped off by the provided shuttle, the bridge can be reached after a short walking distance. GETTING THERE: -Reaching the castle requires an entire day trip from Munich. I visited the real-life inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's Castle in 2012 around this time of year. Worth every single star, getting the most out of Schloss Neuschwanstein should take the better part of a day. There are many nooks and crannies to explore up and down the mountain, soooo much to eat, and sooooo much Glühwein to drink! Aaaaaaah Glühwein. Perfect in winter, it's a delicious hot mulled wine that warms you from the inside out. I miss it so much! I just came across a Yelp Event in Hamburg that made me start reminiscing something fierce. They sell it at the top of the hike to the castle and it really hits the spot! Don't go for the horse carriage, get your workout!!! There's so much to see on your fairy tale hike up the hill: small little rivulets, streams, lush German forest, small wildlife if you're lucky, and it's only a mile. It is quite steep, so be warned. You can take a trail around the Castle, as well. At least, you could three years ago. If you don't want to buy a ticket to go inside, you don't have to. Wandering is free, and the breathtaking views outside definitely outshine what is found inside. Still, I say, if you're curious and love history, take a look inside. I thought it was worth it. When in Bavaria seeing Neuschwanstein Castle is an absolute must. Built in the style of nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival, it is like no other with a setting so beautiful it defies the imagination. It's no wonder that Disney, seemingly unable to conjure up anything more beautiful or fanciful used it as the model and inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's Castle in Disneyland. The fortune King Ludwig II had in order to pay for it, not using public funds, but from his own personal fortune and borrowing staggers the mind. Though not entirely completed, of the many ornate rooms and palace areas my favorite is the grotto located between the salon and study. Based upon the idea of the Hörselberg in the Tannhäuser saga it's a complete childlike fantasy world creation of artificial dripstones, stalactites and stalagmites; a fantasy dream world found in no other palace. Be WARNED!!! If you come here to visit this castle and take any tour that it's time based. So if you come 2pm and purchase tickets, your tour time may not be available until 5pm. Like ours is/was. I think enough has been said and written about this place, so I don't need to elaborate any further. I visited Schloss Neuschwanstein on my last trip as a Philly-based Flight Attendant. I was fortunate enough to get a trip to Munich, so I made a mission to visit this place. Schloss Neuschwanstein has Picture-perfect setting and gorgeous views combine to make this an unforgettable experience. It took me two hours by train to get here, so I had to haul ass as soon as I arrived in Munich. It was a rather cold, and dreary day when I got there, but it didn't stop me from seeing the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside, the mountains and the tiny towns/villages below me. You'll find plenty of perfect spots for some great selfies and profile pics. The only downside is there's not a lot of vegetarian-friendly restaurants here, so be sure to pack your food! read more

Just amazing. No other way to describe it. This place is so cool, you can/t do anything but add it to your bucket list. If in southern Germany, do it. Spend the day and get down here! It is a little tough getting here. You need to take the regional DB to Fussen, then a bus to Schwangau but so many other people are doing it too, just follow them. The little town outside the castles has shops and food if you are earlier. You have to be there 1.5 hours earlier to pick up your tickets if you ordered ahead. I highly recommend you do. If you don't you risk getting there and not being able to get in. Their website has the details for ordering. Once there, you can hike up the hill or take the horse drawn carriages. Of course take the horses! Then you are waiting for your tour time and off you go. Its a nice tour but the views are incredible. See photos. Cool castle, Interesting history, beautiful grounds and lots of shopping nearby for touristy finds. From the town below, you can walk up to the castle, take a bus or carriage ride. We took the bus and walked down. It's a much easier walk down. The bus let us off at the bridge, which provides for a great photo opp. It's a must stop on your way up. No photography is allowed in the castle. You are provided 'headphones' so you will be able to hear the tour guide. There are even more shops in the castle at the end of the tour, but I recommend the shops down in town for a larger selection, if you have the time. It was a great day trip from our stay in Munich. Opulence loses its meaning if you happen to be a crazy king with the dreams of building a castle on the hill top since your early childhood. The interiors are in prime condition considering the place was never restored or renovated. Some of the rooms definitely leave you with an "O" face (o for omahgerd, did they really build all that). The state guided tour will be short - if you only came here for the castle, you might be disappointed. Suggestion is to make day of your trip. I am a huge Disney fan so I was very excited to see this castle in person since Walt Disney designed the Disneyland castle after this castle. We did the tour inside which was so cool and interesting. This place is magificent, and was basically the main reason why I traveled all the way to Munich. Okay, the beer as well, but this is one of those must see places because it was literally supposed to be a fairy tale castle. Well, sort of because it was never finished, but the parts of it that were are nothing short of amazing. The amount of detail that went into many of the rooms are literally mind blowing. Unfortunately they don't allow you to take photos inside, so it is one of those 'you have to actually go there to see it' sort of places. The other thing is that you need to book ahead for a tour, as they only take a few in at a time, and you also have to walk up to the castle. Still, once you get there it is amazing. read more

Definitely a neat place to visit. I visited on Whit Sunday and it was very crowded. The walk up the hill is long and steep but the wait for the bus was 30+ minutes so I walked. It's a strenuous walk. I recommend it but you'll be done with the tour in 30 minutes so you'll spend a lot of travel time for a short tour. read more

Awe inspiring day trip a 2h train ride from Munich. The castle is located high in the Alpine foothills above Fussen, and it is one of the most incredible views I have ever seen. Definitely get tour tickets in advance. The tour lasts about 30 minutes and takes you throughout the castle. Many people complain about it, and they do rush you through quickly, but a few of the experiences make it worthwhile. A lot of the rooms have amazing giant chandeliers with stained glass jewels that glimmer in the sunlight. Plus Ludwig built himself a cave, inside the castle, which has a "rainbow machine," essentially more stained glass expertly positioned to capture light and throw vibrant, colorful reflections on the stone walls. The best part, once the tour is over, you can walk down to the second floor and step out onto the "porch" area, the yellower stone piece that juts out the side of the building. The views of the mountains, the Marienbrucke, and the town/Alpsee below are mind-blowing. It looked like the heavens were beaming sunlight down straight from the castle. Photo ops of a lifetime, right there. Before or after your tour, you are free to walk around the mountainside. About a 5-10 minute walk away is the Marienbrucke, a sort of rickety looking bridge that has spanned the gorge for over 130 years. From there, you get equally spectacular views overlooking the castle. It is selfie central up there, but bide your time, and you will have a few minutes free from the crowds. At the base of the mountain, the Alpsee is a lovely body of water where you can rent a paddle boat or just hike around enjoying the clear aqua water and the ducks/swans gliding up to the shore. Schloss Neuschwanstein means New Swan stone Castle, and the town lives up to its name with swans aplenty greeting you on the water. The bright yellow Hohenschwangau castle is a very short walk away, too. Bonus points! read more

Beautiful fairytale castle to explore in Bavarian Alps! Be sure to reserve your English speaking (or whichever language you prefer) tour well in advance. Tour guides were very knowledgeable and pleasant. Our son was surprised to find out that neither Schloss Neuschwanstein or nearby Schloss Hohenschwangau had a dungeon. Tour was great for all ages as our group ranged from ages 4 to 70. Granted for those with bad knees or not up for a hike you can pay to take a horse carriage ride or bus to get up to the castle. Half of our group hiked with the young kids to wear them out and the other half took the bus. It was a little hard to find everyone to regroup at the top, but it's manageable. If your group splits up, we recommend meeting at the top castle entrance as the bus stop doesn't come all the way up so those taking the bus still have a little uphill hiking. However, the view hiking up from the bus stop was very pretty. Definitely plan to spend at least half a day of not a full day to explore both Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Hohenschwangau, which I believe they sold a combo ticket for both. Castles were a highlight of our trip especially seeing the awe in the young kids exploring these massive castles! read more

I will never forget how beautiful Neushwanstein Castle was. We did a bus tour from Munich to the castle. The tour was very interesting and we learned so much. I don't even like history very much and I thought this was an incredible experience. Walt Disney used this castle as inspiration to create Sleeping Beauty's castle. It was a dream come true to see in person. A must-see when in Germany. Definitely be sure to take the time to tour the inside of the castle. Each room is absolutely breathtaking. The precious metals and jewels used to decorate the rooms in like nothing I've ever seen before. There is also a restaurant at the bottom of the hill that serves very good food. read more

This is a really awesome attraction if you're visiting Germany. It's a bit of a pain to get up the hill via walking or bus and getting back down, but it's definitely worth seeing, even if the tours are a bit short for the price range. Be sure to bring money to tip your shuttle bus drivers if utilizing the shuttle. There are a lot of really awesome restaurants nearby with traditional German street wursts...seriously some of the best "hot dogs" I've had in my entire life. If you aren't fairly active, I would recommend taking the shuttle to and from the castle. As someone else mentioned, we tried getting to Mary's bridge for a photo and it was PACKED. We were really limited on time, unfortunately, so we had to skip that part. It seems a bit overrated, so don't feel too sad if you don't get a spot in the horde of people. read more

It's no wonder Neuschwanstein is Germany's #1 attraction, it is stunning!! My fiancé and I came here on a day trip from Munich a few days ago and we had such a great time. If you are staying in Munich, and don't feel like taking a group tour, you simply hop on a train going to Fussen. It takes just under 2 hours to get there. Simple and so worth it! The grounds are amazing. There are actually two castles there, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Neuschwanstein is the original castle, but King Ludwig didn't live there very long, therefore, the interior of Hohenschwangau, his main residence, is much nicer. However, the outside of Neuschwanstein is far superior and the main reason over 1 million people visit this place every year. There are shops, restaurants, and horse and carriage rides below the castles. A very romantic place! read more

Amazing!!! This is the most beautiful castle or palace I have toured... and there have been quite a few. You must make a reservation for a guaranteed entry time. This will also expedite the ticket purchase process on your day to tour. Be sure to splurge for the full package... both castle. It is worth the price for the experience. To get up here, you will have several options: a healthy hike (on paved trail), bus or a horse drawn carriage. Whichever choice you make, there is still some walking. Have no worries, it is shaded and was comfortable even on the hot day we were here. This place attracts the crowds so plan your day to start early. At the time of our trip, there was maintenance/ restoration taking place so one side was encased in scaffolding. This blocked part of the view but didn't diminish the magnitude of the structure. As you tour, pay attention to detail. It is breathtaking and beyond my wildest dreams. From floor to ceiling, there is so much to see. The influence on Disney's vision can be found in multiple place through the interior and exterior of this castle. I wish I could have taken pictures but that is not allowed. The tour guides will keep you moving so don't blink. lol If you are anywhere near Bavaria... this is a must! read more

In all fairness I am not super interested in castles, We came here as apart of our Globus tour and the bus took us most of the way up the hill and we paid to have a horse carriage take us down. The carriage ride would have been nice but they pack too many people in so that the romantic ride I'd hoped for. As for the castle they are doing renovations on it which was unfortunate visually. It looks large but they don't take you to many rooms ... I gather not many rooms were finished ... LOTS and LOTs of steps .. the rooms were ok but expected more. It REALLY aggravates me when they don't allow non flash photography. Id asked our Globus guy if they allowed photography and he didn't know ... well the answer is a BIG FAT NO. It's prettiest from a far and the view from a far is free and you skip all the steps and you can take photos. theres a bridge you walk out on that gives a good view if we were going by ourselves I'd have preferred to just see that and skip the rest. The view of the mountains and lake are very pretty from the castle .. that was pretty much the highlight. read more
