This dark period in Germany's history still plays a part in German culture today. While in Cologne, I wanted to make sure I visited NS-Dokumentationszentrum. What a mouthful! We stopped by this war museum for a couple of hours. There were some things I liked, and some things I didn't like. One, it's affordable. I'm always going to appreciate that. Two, they have an audio guide. When time allows, an audio guide is a great way to get the most out of a museum. You'll see a bunch of pictures and information on the rise of the Nazi party, the World Wars, and the eventual collapse post-war. The museum is actually on the site of some Nazi activity. On the flip side, there's no A/C in the museum. Not easy for an American (we love our air conditioning). I also would have appreciated a little more sophistication in the presentation of all of the material in the museum. It wasn't bad by any means, but it could have been better. Nevertheless, it's well worth your time when visiting Cologne. It's an important part of world history, and you're getting it directly from the source.

The most heavy moment is walking thru the basement cells and seeing the hopeless scratchings on the walls from former prisoners.

The exhibition varies and thus inform yourself before hand it it suits your interests from my point of view it is definitely worth visiting.

Interesting to see Roman ruins underneath a German city, but since Cologne was a provincial…read morecapital, there they are! This is an underground excavation of the governor's residence, and if you're a fan of ancient history then it's worth the €3,50. For that matter, even if you're not a huge history fan, it's a unique feature of Cologne and probably worth it. There is only one small room of displays, and they are almost all in German, but they appear to be quite professionally done. There is also a stretch of Roman sewer tunnel you can walk though; while interesting there aren't any displays or anything in it, it's just a long hallway. The ruins themselves are in a huge room with a walkway running around and through it. The signs in this area are in both German and English. Not someplace you should expect to spend hours, but if you like this stuff you should probably upgrade to the €10 ticket that includes admission to the Romisch Germanische Museum (next to the cathedral) that has a lot more displays.

It was the military and civil administration department of the roman province "Niedergermanien". Today you can look at the ruins that are located under a house in the " Kleine Budengasse". Probably that is only interesting for people who are interested in roman history and/or archaeology. I think all other people can save the EUR 2,50 for the entry...

Even with the audio guide, there are some parts of the museum that you will just have to squint at intelligently, take pictures thinking that you will translate when you get home (you won't), and move on with the other children to the big tank. Big tanks require no translation. Neither does the life-sized canoe crashing through the wall with life jackets pouring out of it (bet you're going now, aren't you?)

This is one of the best museums to visit if you are at all interested in contemporary German…read morehistory (WWII and on). While it is a bit frustrating if you don't know German (only the major captions on signs are translated into English, though I heard you can ask for an English guide), the fact that it's free more than makes up for it. Regardless of my utter lack of German language ability, I still managed to spend hours in this museum. The best part? Admission is absolutely FREE. Definitely a must-see attraction in Bonn. Go with German locals if you can; it'll likely make your visit much more meaningful. Note: You will be asked to turn in your personal belongings at the coat check. Also, there is a direct entrance to the museum from the Heussallee/Museumsmeile U-Bahn station, on the western side of Friedrich-Ebert-Allee -- going through this entrance will actually allow you to see a neat car and train.

So many intricate details on this building. Love the gothic age structures and how it's aged over time. Nicely organized with signs for parking and elevators. Free to tour, the Cologne Cathedral is a must-visit while in Cologne. The size alone will take your…read morebreath away. Looking closer at all of the details, it's truly amazing. You could just stare for hours. The inside can be overwhelming, walking amongst crowds of people. The interior takes 30 minutes or so to check everything out. There is so much to look at and take in. Admission is free but keep in mind to be sober and dressed decently modest. We did watch people be turned away.

Like the towers of the cathedral and Martin Luther's church, the tower of the Historic Rathaus can be seen from most parts of the city, however the impressive nature of the building only comes to the for when you actually get up close to it. Basically the tower is covered in statues of various celebrities of the city. I have to be honest that I don't know who precisely the statues represent, but apparently one of them is a witch. However, even though I don't know the identity of the statues, it is still pretty cool to spend some time admiring the architecture.

If you're the sort of tourist who likes to learn a little about the social history of the places…read moreyou visit, and if you speak German, then I recommend popping into the City Hall. There are a couple tapestries and paintings to view that will give you insights into the city's history, and often art exhibits and such that will give you a sense of the current state of affairs in Cologne. There is also an atrium explaining the legend of the mayor and the lion. However, you need to speak/read German, as virtually nothing is written in English.

Located in Cologne, I spent a good three hours or so exploring this museum of fine arts. When it comes to museums, I look for several different things, and Wallraf delivered on all fronts. Logistics: museums are typically large. There's a lot to see. I like when a museum is easy to navigate. Where you don't have to use a lot of brainpower to make sure that you don't miss anything. In addition to a map of the museums, the way the museum is laid out makes a difference. It adds to my comfort, along with A/C which you have here. And which is by no means guaranteed in Germany. More importantly, the artwork. Wallraf has an impressive collection of international art spanning various periods and styles including French impressionism, pointillism, and much, much more. You'll find paintings by Monet, Rembrandt, and many other famous artists. I've been lucky enough to learn a lot about art history since I was a kid. I know I'm at a good museum when I'm snapping pictures left and right. This is what happened here. Wallraf-Richartz Museum is one of the top attractions on TripAdvisor in Cologne. Don't miss it when visiting!

The museum is set on three levels, with the upper levels having the older works and the lower levels having the newer works. I do admit that I liked the museum, but it didn't come across as great as some of the other museums that I visited. However, there was a pretty decent selection of art from across the centries, and it was an enjoyable visit. Also, it isn't that huge so you can complete it in an hour or so, depending on how fast you breeze through the rooms.

Kolmbia shows the art collection of the archdiocese..and this is something I thought would be…read moreinteresting to see. I have to admit, the collection that was on exhibition when I went was quite boring. But from my understanding there are a number of different exhibitions shown throughout the year, and I would hate for one bad curation to ruin a recommendation for someone to visit here as these kinds of things are so subjective. The reason I say this is the architecture of the building is spectacular, and for me the highlight of the experience. The building is the creation of Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, and incorporates the remains of St Kolumbia which was destroyed in WWII with a spectacular and modern exhibition space for the arts. The way in which this is done is seamless and the building maintains a sense of serentiy and sancitity that you would have expected to find in the church which once stood there. Perhaps the most sobering part of the experience of Kolumbia is visiting the small chapel on the side of the building called Madonna in den Trümmern (Our lady of the rubble). This chappel was built in the 1950s around a madonna figure that survived the bombing of Cologne and was venerated as a sign of hope.
