We arrived just at opening for dinner and were the only couple there. We got a warm greeting and seated quickly. Our waiter immediately asked us if we would like a beverage/water. Having checked their website prior to going, I found the brewed their own beers, so I asked what types of beer they had in tap. My wife got a Pilsner and for myself, a German IPA. Bioth were excellent. We had the waiter translate the menu all everything looked awesome so it took awhile to decide. Within a half hour of arriving the restaurant started filling up quickly. Lively crowd but not too loud. An AWESOME experience and a fantastic way to cap off our last evening in Basel.

The place is located in the heart of Basel, right on one of the main promenades, so it was quite busy that day, mostly with tourists. The restaurant has a big indoor area, plus outdoor seating. We decided to sit inside to enjoy its classic Swiss design and cozy vibe. You can sense the historic charm in the atmosphere, but everything inside was still well maintained and spotlessly clean. Our waiter was very nice and helpful - he gave us tips about Swiss food and recommended a couple of dishes from the menu. The menu, by the way, wasn't very big, and it focused on traditional Swiss classics. We decided to share two dishes: Wienerschnitzel and Cheese Fondue (Käsefondue). The food came out quickly, within about 15 minutes. The pork schnitzel was flavorful and tender, with a perfectly enjoyable texture. We chose French fries as the side, and they were cooked really well. But the star of our lunch was definitely the Cheese Fondue - absolutely delicious! The cheese they used was incredibly rich and flavorful, and the fresh bread served with it was also tasty. Dipping the bread into the melted cheese made it a truly delightful experience. Both dishes were generous in size and more than enough for two people. The only negative about this restaurant is the prices, which are extremely high. The Cheese Fondue cost 38 CHF (about $48) PER PERSON, and the Wienerschnitzel was 40 CHF (about $50). Even though the food was excellent, I found these prices far too steep. The soft drinks we ordered were also expensive - 6 CHF ($8) for a cup of black tea or a Diet Coke. I'm from Miami, where restaurants are pricey too, but not this expensive, so even I was shocked when we got the final bill. Finalizing my review, I can say that I loved every part of my experience at the restaurant except the prices. It's definitely not a place I could afford to eat at every day (like I do in many restaurants in Miami, since I don't cook), but I still recommend checking this restaurant at least once for the experience - to try truly delicious Swiss food. Kabar could be best described as a cafe-bar. The menu reflects a somewhat Mediterranean flair. Among the offerings: (Spanish) tortilla, panini, & tiramisu. I also spied soup on the menu as well as pasta. The bar is well-stocked with product the we'd refer to as 'call' or 'top shelf' back home. Some favorites that caught my eye were: 12 yr Caol Ila, (3 types of) Absinthe, Hendricks and Sapphire gin. For those not interested in spirits, Kabar stocks a small but good selection of beer. There's the house brew: Kabier; Züri brew: Turbinenbräu & Basler brewers, Brau Bude, also make an appearance. We visited during the late afternoon. Kabar was just about half full with families, couples and solos. Strains of a reggae tune were heard over the speakers, but it was not imposing & we could comfortably chat. Kabar, located on the grounds of an old barracks where the annual Basler Tattoo is held, boasts an ample outside seating area surrounded by a wide expanse of lawn & paved surfaces. Visitors to Basel would do well to both visit the barracks & stop in for a nosh and a libation at Kabar. Transport: Tram 8 from the central station.

Hinz und Kunz is a nice little bar in the inside Markthalle, have been there few times for cocktails and whiskey. Unlike some other bars, it is not so noisy and people can actually talk to each other without screaming. The cocktails are fantastic (although a bit expensive). I had the gin based, rum based and vodka based ones (of course on different occasions, have normal functioning liver). I was also introduced an Indian whiskey called Amrut, who would have thought that Indians made one of the best whiskey!!
