Schmagel's is pretty great and, having visited Saint Augustine for the past 35 years it wasn't until my most recent visit that I even discovered this restaurant, tucked away across the street from Scarlet O'Hara's. Schmagels has several types of bagels, but I like their sesame ones the best. They are completely caked in sesame seeds. I noticed one reviewer who purports to say that this isn't the way it should be done. But I say, if it tastes good, then do it! There's not one way to make bagels. The bagels are all soft and doughy, and have an excellent texture. They also have numerous flavors of cream cheese, although I only went for plain old fashioned cream cheese without any added flavors. The salmon bagel wasn't the best I've had, but it was good enough. I'd probably get something else on my next visit, and I DEFINITELY will be visiting Schmagel's when next I'm in Saint Aug! Also, I should mention that the employees are extremely nice and fun to talk with. Parking is kind of difficult...I parked in the lot across the street or down by the nearby church. read more

The food was incredible! Once I saw the turkey club on their menu I knew I needed to get it, and glad I did. It melted in your mouth, with lots of layers from the turkey, to the bacon to the ranch dressing. I wish I took a picture but I was too fixated on shoving it in my face. My husband and I had a light lunch here yesterday while walking around St. Augustine. I had a BLT on an everything bagel with olive cream cheese, while the hubs had a philly panini. The cream cheese was good, the bagel was a little tough and some of the seeds tasted a bit burned (maybe too much toasting?). Overall, we thought the sandwiches were good, but the wait time was ridiculous at almost 30 minutes at around two in the afternoon, with only one other couple around. Underwhelming. I did not go in expecting some amazing meal, but my Bacon Egg and cheese was sad looking. My wife had the Scam. The ham she expected like a ham steak cut, but it was the thin slices stuff like you get from the grocery store. Overall, not bad, but not better than most can just make at home. read more

Don't let the 3-Stars fool you! Schmagels is a nice place to sit down after wandering the hot streets of St.Augustine most of the morning. Being from Jersey its hard as hell to find bagels ANYWHERE that are actual bagels and not buns with holes in them. I ended up ordering the Cinnamon Rasin Crunch, a Cinnamon Rasin Bagel with Brown and White granular sugar on top of it! Since it was after 12 when I visited the sugar had become a hard crust, making the bagel a little hard to chew, but that's very common for most bagels! They're best in the morning right when they're made, and as the day goes on they keep their flavor but are best served with cream cheese or as a sandwich (I had mine totally plain). Finally their homemade iced tea is some of the best I've ever had period! And I've had a LOT of iced tea in my 20+ years!! If you're not in the mood to munch but want something to sip on I'd grab a cup of it, sweetened or unsweetened! With free WiFi, booths inside under AC and seats outside in the shade this is definitely a place to stop by if you want to just grab a simple snack! read more

Worst service ever. It was 1:30pm when we walked in. My pregnant sister asked how the Schmizza was. The response from the brown haired mid 50s woman was "It takes 20 minutes to make, and I'm not turning the oven (or whatever you use) back on." They close at 3pm! We immediately walked out after that. We weren't going to get it anyway due to the fact that we didn't have time to wait, but my God! You don't need to treat potential customers that way. Hey guys at yelp, only one $ ? Two toasted bagels with cream cheese and two coffees $14.40. I ordered double toasted bagels they must have been confused since both bagels were warm and not crispy. I also ordered extra cream in my coffee but they gave me about a spoonful. When I complained she said they were out. This was 8:30 AM. Out of the three I got, two were stale, the poppy bagel tasted like cinnamon garlic something but not like poppy despite it being loaded with poppy seeds. Trial and error... Very hard to find good bagels outside of NY or Miami, (especially in Jax, where biscuits win out over bagels). But I had a delicious nova salmon, piled high, served open faced. Comes with capers, tomato, onion; I asked for lettuce and, although the Staff needed reminding, I got nice crisp romaine, not wilted. Disclaimer: I'm a New Yorker visiting the St. Augustine area and I'm definitely a bagel snob. The Goods: - Fun outdoor seating right in downtown St. Augustine. - The staff was friendly and helpful - The prices are good. The Bad: - The bagels are not good at all. They have the consistency of frozen bagels and an almost non-existant, slightly unpleasant taste. - We showed up around noon and there were almost no bagels left. We had a very limited selection to choose from. - The "fresh squeezed orange juice" that came in a styrofoam cup tasted far worse that what I usually get in New York and was an insult to the other great juice I had at other places on this trip. My advice is to avoid this place and take the short trip over to Everything Bagel which has far far far superior bagels. read more
