We took the day off specifically to visit Schmidt Winery, hoping for a relaxing afternoon of wine, food, and great hospitality. Unfortunately, it turned into one of the most disappointing winery experiences we've had. The biggest issue wasn't just the food--it was the customer service and overall atmosphere. The food service employees were unfriendly, impersonal, and appeared far more interested in their phones than interacting with customers. We ordered a full Caesar salad and one of the most expensive pizzas on the menu. The Caesar salad was surprisingly small, and even though we ordered the full size, it was a very disappointing portion for the price. The pizzas themselves are also quite small compared to what you'd expect from most pizzerias, making the price even harder to justify. The pizza was completely unacceptable. Several slices had virtually no toppings at all--just cheese. For one of the highest-priced pizzas on the menu, the quality was nowhere near what we expected. I brought the pizza back to the counter to show the employee that some slices had no toppings. He didn't apologize, ask what was wrong, or say a single word. He simply took the pizza and walked away. When my wife asked to speak with a manager, she was told, "We have no managers working here today." That response was just as disappointing as the food. Hoping someone in the tasting room could help, I explained what had happened to one of the employees. Instead of apologizing or trying to make things right, the employee responded, "Yeah, we have to send our shit back there all the time because they don't get it right." Hearing an employee speak that way about a coworker and in front of customers was completely unprofessional and made the situation even worse. To their credit, I did receive a refund for the pizza. However, by that point, the experience had already been ruined. As we were leaving, I turned around and noticed the same employee from the tasting room and the employee who had taken back the pizza standing together, watching my wife and me leave while appearing to talk about us. Whether they were or not, that's the impression they gave, and it left us feeling even more unwelcome. What really added insult to injury was seeing one of the employees sit down with a pizza for lunch as we were leaving. Their pizza looked loaded with toppings and looked far better than the one we had just been served. I obviously don't know whether it was made differently or not, but from what we saw, it certainly gave the impression that employees were getting pizzas prepared with far more care than the ones being served to paying customers. What disappointed me most is that Schmidt Winery has so much potential. The property is beautiful, but the hospitality simply doesn't match the setting. The atmosphere felt forced rather than welcoming, and the lack of professionalism from several employees overshadowed everything else. I sincerely hope the owners see this review because I don't believe they would want guests treated this way. Sometimes business owners don't realize the impression their staff is leaving on customers. People may forget exactly what was said or what they ate, but they'll always remember how a place made them feel. Unfortunately, Schmidt Winery made us feel like our business didn't matter. We won't be returning. Fortunately, there are several excellent wineries in the Grants Pass area where customers are treated with genuine hospitality and appreciation. I hope Schmidt Winery takes this feedback seriously, because experiences like ours don't encourage people to come back. read more

This was the last stop on our wine tour in Applegate and it was an ok experience but also not the best... I wanted to do 3 stars but even with the missteps they still do warrant 4. Pros: -GORGEOUS grounds with lovely gardens you can wander in -Food was good. I mean really, really good. My dad ordered the bread and I was a little perturbed because I wasn't expecting much. Boy, was I wrong. Soft but warm and delicious -The wine is really good and they have a lot of varieties and vintages to choose from Cons: -It was so impersonal and detached. We didn't feel welcome. Worth the drive to visit this winery. Beautiful grounds with a stage for live music, quaint sitting areas among the trees & grass with a fountain pond nearby. Beautiful setting and landscaping. Lots of wood inside and a very nice fireplace. There is indoor and outdoor seating all of which is very inviting. The tasting experience, however, left something to be desired. It's all very impersonal and mechanical. You place your order at the bar. For a tasting, they fill up the glasses to a specific amount, place them in a tray with a printed piece of paper with descriptions and off you go to find a table. There is no opportunity to ask any questions about the wines. Unfortunately, none of them made us say "Wow" so we didn't purchase any bottles. On to the next winery! read more

Schmidt you need to do better! When we first arrived, we headed to the serving area to place an order for food and drinks. One attendant. Three parties showing up almost simultaneously. I get that we had to wait but the attendant did not even acknowledge we were there. When asked about the wine selection, she said that it was on the counter. Yes, it was and the other two parties were reading it. You only have two wine selection menus? Then when it was our turn, I selected a wine from the list she gave us and said we are not pouring that wine today. Here is "another" list of what we are pouring today. Then we ordered our food. We selected the cheesy bread and cheese and fruit tray. Disappointed with both. Skimpy on the items for the cheese and fruit tray. The presentation was not even attractive. Cheesy bread had no flavor with dark toasted edges. The grounds, however, are beautiful and it was a gorgeous day for relaxing. I used to recommend Schmidt as one of my "must go to" wineries in the Valley. No so anymore. read more

Okay! First off the good stuff...the landscape is amazing, gorgeous, and very nice place to sit and relax. The food is delicious. Pizzas are amazing, salad was good, and bread was yummy! The wine is great! No complaints at all and lots of varieties. Stuff that could be better....The hostess takes you to the area you can sit and we could pick any place available which was nice. However, she doesn't explain where to order and doesn't give you menus. You have to order the food outside and the wine inside. But also you have to fight to find a menu. They are few and far between. I don't mind that you have to order separate but you don't know that and have to search or ask to figure it out. The lines were long, so it was difficult to ask questions. I think the hostess could simply inform customers how to order and provide menus which would make things a lot smoother and less confusing. We ordered food and it was pretty packed, which is fine. But we got our food and then the couple we were with didn't get their food for 30 more minutes and we ordered at the same time. At this point we asked because we saw almost everyone get their food except for the people we ordered with. They told us 10 more minutes...so we ask and they just said sorry we are busy. Totally understand that but when people who ordered 30 minutes after us had gotten all their food and we hadn't we were really confused. We ask if they could take the food off, the girl got her manager and he said "would a bottle of wine make you happy?!". It was nice but we think just simple communication in the beginning would have helped. We just were confused how everyone but us got their order. We only had two small pizzas which was what everyone else in the place was ordering too. We finally got our entire order an hour and 30 minutes after we order. The ENTIRE place had their food before us and at least 10 groups ordered after us. I understand it's COVID but just telling people that there is an issue with timing would help. Now...the controversial stuff which I am not going to get political so just save it. If you are at all worried about a pandemic don't come here. They pretty much do not enforce any requirements. 60% of people are not wearing masks, the girl helping make pizza's, half the way through put her mask on her chin. You can come up and get your food without wearing masks. They are not sanitizing tables or chairs or really anything. I guess it's the culture of the area but business wise this does not make for a comfortable atmosphere for everyone. We mentioned to staff that it is an issue and she get pretty annoyed with us and went back to her coworker to complain about our suggestions. Overall this place is good but it could be so much better. It is disorganized, and almost sad because it could be an amazing experience. The wine is really good and the food is really good but it is overshadowed by issues. The customer service was not friendly or engaging. They seem unhappy to be at work. I get it, I am at times too but you can't let it how. We would come back at a time that is not a pandemic so we don't have to be worried about sanitation or masks. And yes the pandemic is real, you may not like it, but 160,000 people didn't die for fun. read more

BUZZ KILL. We came to this establishment with optimism and excitement since we were visiting our newly-engaged friends. We ordered two bottles of wine and two dishes, yet when we stepped away for a photograph on their scenic property.......... Their hasty staff took it upon themselves to eradicate our dishes and beverages from the table in order for another party to populate the table. MIND YOU, there were numerous vacancies on their grounds for patrons to sit. I feel this attitude reflects wanting to get tips based on the turnover of tables versus positive reviews of hospitality. Usually we've been met with great hospitality and kindness, however it was odd that today we were removed from our table despite a plethora of open sets on those property. Honestly, I felt embarrassed for my in-laws who expected a serene ambiance on their vacation. This is a gorgeous place with wonderful photo ops. It looks like a beautiful lodge and has a gorgeous outdoors. The only reason why I gave it one less star is because when our party of 4 arrived, the service was focused on another party for close to 20 minutes. We had ordered our tastings and she didn't even start and we were waiting outside while she was chatting it up. I will say that the bathroom was extremely clean. The tastings include a little bit of dark chocolate, oyster crackers, and complementary water/iced tea. I like how the tastings were in little test tube displays with a separate strip of paper of the description. We also ordered the Blue Hawaiian pizza was delicious and also the combo pizza which was also delicious. :) read more

NO STARS. We have never been to a winery with such poor service. We were first "greeted" with "no minors in the tasting room". We had an infant and a 4 yr old. The right response might have been, "please help yourself to a table. We'll be right over with a tasting menu for you." We had to get up and down from the table so many times--to get water, napkins, plates, utensils, food and wine. 3 people standing at the tasting counter and 3 at the pizza oven. None of these fine folks were kind enough to bring any of these things to our table. (None of them looked busy- the man at the counter was on the computer the whole time). It was self serve all the way. And...we're supposed to tip? We had a group of 9 and spent plenty of money to have to wait on ourselves. We have never experienced this lack of service anywhere in this valley. We still had a wonderful time entertaining ourselves but we will never be back and will be glad to share our displeasure with everyone. read more

We contacted the Schmidt Vineyard by phone and email 4-5 months before we were hoping to host an event at their venue. We were constantly directed to email their event manager who never returned our emails or calls for 3 months. Finally, after pleading with a hostess to give him my contact and ask about their availability, I received a call from a man named Stephen who said he would call me back next day about the feasibility of the event. Stephen did not call the next day, so I called him again. He said he would call back with an answer within a few hours and never responded. I called him again and left a voicemail to which he never responded at all. Regardless of their availability, the customer service was disrespectful, especially after communicating the urgency of our timing after months of waiting for their response. read more

Schmidt is one of my favorite vineyards in the rogue valley. Yeah, there's no real customer service as it's a fast casual experience, but the scenery is beautiful, the wines are moderately priced and delicious, and the pizza is SO yummy! Some here feel they wanted more attention, but all things considered, Covid etc we enjoyed just getting all the wine at once and going off on our own. I don't need my wine explained to me, and I don't need to told goodbye. We had a nice table all by itself at the end of a walkway going out to a pond. We tried all the reds, and with food I may have enjoyed them more. Like the nice aged gruyere we had with us but weren't allowed to bring in. All had a very similar taste. Nothing stood out. All were deep, full bodied, tannin and with a bitter finish. Meh. You get a lot of wine for $10 and it's a beautiful location with lots of seating etc. But the wine, so so. Didn't drink it all, and wouldn't buy it. Maybe the whites are better? Still enjoyed the visit and 10 bucks is fairly reasonable but then again, I didn't drink the wine since it was not good. I've been to hundreds of wineries in my days, but sadly there are so few that are good. So yet another fancy winery with less than great wine is not a surprise. Amazing how some people are ok with so so wine. I feel like bringing a bottle so they can see what Syrah is supposed to taste like and see the lights go on in their eyes. When you've had good wine, you don't need anyone to explain it to you. It's an ethereal experience when the wine is good. The family here are fun and know their wines! Entertainment on weekends, fire baked pizzas, salads and burgers are fantastic! The wine selections are extensive and make it difficult to choose. The grounds are so beautiful as every tree and plant was personally planted by the Schmidt family. A perfect location for weddings and receptions. The entertainment is free and families with well behaved children can attend and listen to music and dance. I love it here! read more

One of the most beautiful wineries in the region with its Monet-like gardens and pond, and knotty pine walled tasting room. However, I can't say the flight of wines were impressive and didn't finish each sample. Unfortunately, our server was stoic and humorless to the point of unwelcoming. PSA- Schmidt Family Vinyards no longer allows minors. For years I have gone to their late Friday nights with my children and was turned away this evening. It was no where written on their main page of their website, they claimed there was a sign when you entered however the sign said "hours 10-5 No minors permitted at this time in small print . So when I rolled in at 6 on a Friday I thought we were in the clear. Owner comes up to me and states "Didn't you read the sign? No minors allowed. During covid children can't stay 10 ft apart and we aren't allowing it." As the owner in this exchange is standing a foot from my face, no mask on, explaining to me that my kids don't know how to stand 10 ft apart even though the mandate is 6ft and she couldn't even abide by it.‍ She said we could stay tonight but my kids couldn't so much as stand up from the table. As she proceeded to walk back to her table that had children at it running around not seated. I don't complain much about covid mandates because I get it and want to support local business and the fact that they are just following rules but this was not only a breach of the rules by the owner but unrealistic mandates that aren't even required. So... to sum up here were my takeaways: My kids know Covid rules better than the owner. They would never go less than 6ft away from someone without their mask as they did. Their wine isn't that good anyway and we only came for the pizza and space for kids therefore I won't be back. read more

May I just present my bona fides. I am a National Beer Judge and ex-brewer with 4 medals from The Great American Beer Festival. I have seen most of Europe and enjoyed wines of many types. "STYLE" is a potent word for me. Almost all great wines adhere to a style which, over the years, has proven agreeable to folks who drink them. Thus, an Italian Pinot Grigio is bracing, acidic, low in forward fruit, and dry. Many American winemakers turn out what they call a PInot Grigio or Pinot Gris but these tend to be fruity and off-dry--pleasant as some may be, they violate style. Cal Schmidt and company apply rigorous stylistic protocols to their white wines and you get a true Pinot Grigio, a true Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and a lovely Rousanne.: everyone one true to the style which made it time-worthy. Add to this a very pleasant staff and locale .... does not get any better. read more

Out of all of the Applegate wineries I visited a while ago, this one was NOT impressive. The staff was distracted, venti iced Starbucks drinks littering the counters and they were constantly on their phones. Customer service was clearly not their first priority. The wines were so-so. Beautiful tasting room, with wonderful, spacious grounds...but if you're looking for an intimate, truly memorable, and delicious tasting experience, there are many other wineries to check out. read more

I was disappointed, after paying $5 for tasting, by the light pours and lack of friendliness of the staff.
