Gavin and his crew did a great job of staining my fence and gazebo. The back fence was tricky to do but they managed to work around it. They were professional, explaining exactly what was required to do the job right and were always on time. There was a delay in timing to start the job but they kept me informed and up to date on their progress and cleaned everything up and helped put back the yard to what it was. read more

I will now never use this company for painting as they have bad environmental and ethical values. They also dissobeyed my mailbox which read "No Advertisements and No solicitation". HAHA! Opposite day; Scholars Edge wanted to desperately find new customers through poor environmental ethics (i.e. ignore someone else's attempt to lower thier eco-inprint) but yet, they have turned me off and not only will I never use this company, I will tell everyone I meet not to use them due to thier lack of understanding other's wishes and ethos. Besides, like what idiot is sitting at home going, 'geeze I sure wish I knew about a painting company, but wait, no one ever dropped off paper slips in my ailbox and so therefore I do not know how to look through a phone book or google search to find painting companies. Then, if Scholars edge had good reviews online, I would certainly have booked their services. Then told others to use them based on their eco-values and potential good job. Instead, they got the opposite. Next time i catch them not following my directions i will come down to their business and give back their garbage. read more

We had 3 decks that needed some tlc. Two of them 3 years' old, the other just 2. It was time for them to be prepped with varnish to keep out wet Victoria winter weather. Shaan was recommended by our amazing painters who had worked on our renovation a few years' earlier. What an efficient and thorough young man he is. So happy with the recommendation and the work done. It took the expected amount of time, 3 days start to finish. They even skipped lunch one day which made me feel bad. Two workers, both good people, thoughtful and considerate, also incredibly hard working and efficient. Great tidier uppers too at the end of each day. Shaan would be along a few times a day, most days. He always has his finger on the pulse. And a working team to manage which I'm certain he does admirably. I'd think he has a pretty contented staff too. He has an approachable manner, is a good communicator and definitely a touch of humour under all that! It rained the day after they left. It did what it said on the tin and we now have water beading on each deck rather than absorption. Would 100% recommend this particular SE Painting outfit. We'd use them again in a heartbeat. read more

May 2023 I hired Scholars Edge to paint the exterior of my house, little did I know, that would be the biggest mistake and nightmare I ever made since purchasing my house 14 years ago. My biggest mistake was giving them twice the down payment required. I wanted to assure I was going to be at the beginning of May/2023. So much for the extra money on the down payment guaranteeing an early May start, they didn't even start until 10 days after the promised date. Oil primer everywhere, and poorly applied where it was supposed to go. In fact, my Scholar wanted an extra $500 to come back after I fired him for the second time to finish the soffits, oh yes, leaves included, they didn't even take the leaves out of the soffits when they were up on the ladder. I had injured myself and my knees were shot and I couldn't climb ladders anymore, otherwise I would've done my house myself. That was the only reason I hired them. They destroyed my place, they were never coming back to my house if I had anything to do with it. There was no painting whatsoever, Not one drop of actual paint made it onto my house, what a terribly incompetent company. The pictures and video speak for themselves, hopefully, I can get a video or two on here. My scholar was very young "18" and had no painting experience whatsoever. As well, neither did his younger helper "17". He had one employee who eventually quit and then had to hire more as the job got busier, and half of them quit after one day, this company does not support its employees at all, in fact they aren't even employees of S E. They are young students, that pay a very high % of their quote to S E, SE gets paid before anyone else, yes that's how it works. Anyone that goes through the S E training program is only given one day painting training at head office, and that was according to my Scholar. The same person that boasted about having 20+ years of painting experience behind him. Well, that's because the owner was a painter for 20+ years and they were riding on his experience coattails. Very deceitful and dishonest, as well they did not provide most items mentioned in the contract, especially drop sheets which I provided and then my Scholar never even used them while on my property. He knowingly took them with him to his next job, haha. I found out one year later by the person that came to my door soliciting the business to paint my house, that my Scholar was fired after the disaster at my place. So I never did get my drop sheets back. The oil primer drips and paint brush strokes and spills went everywhere. On my clear cedar decks, cedar railings, cedar post, stairs, also went all over the concrete walkway around my house, my asphalt driveway, and the stairs leading to my front door. I spent almost the entire month of June cleaning up their mess, I had no contact nor support whatsoever from the owner. In fact, I had sent pictures and videos of my job and never heard from the owner until the last day of the season just ahead of the Labour Day long weekend at 4:25 PM, he called me up and he said, he was on his way to a campsite with his trailer and I had five minutes of his time, "that's exactly what he said!" He asked me what I want it from him. I said, I want my job completed or my money back and he said, well that's not gonna happen, the season is over. So I said so you're telling me that you're gonna do nothing for me! You're gonna leave me in the lurch the way my house is. He paused, and said well, let me address this in the fall. When I have more time to look into it, I never heard back from him. The only time I've ever heard back from him was when I file a complaint with the BBB. He insulted me with a $500 refund and asked me to take my complaint review down from the BBB. I received no apology. I receive no compensation and I did not get any satisfaction, only grief and disappointment. I would not recommend Scholar's edge to paint my garbage bins. Don Coulson Victoria BC read more

The painters did an extremely poor job painting our front door. They used the wrong product and when we discussed this they fixed a small portion of the door. So now we have a door that is half matte and half glossy. We ended up signing off on the job just to be rid of them and hope to never see them again read more

Scholars Edge recently painted the cedar siding exterior of our house under Laine's direction. The contract stated the precise scope of work to be done, the project cost & proposed start date. Prior to starting the work, Laine provided several paint samples to ensure that we got the exact colour we wanted. The painters, who arrived promptly each day during the 5 day work period, were very personable & efficient. The quality of the work was excellent & Laine visited the site regularly to ensure that the project was on schedule & all our requirements were being met. Rheana and her crew were a delight to work with. Her quote was quick and more than fair. Scheduling was a breeze and Rheana was very accommodating. Communication was incredible. They showed up on time, kept a clean jobsite, and worked hard to make sure I was happy with the completed job. Faced with correcting a previous company's work, as well as multiple mid-job colour changes (that each required sanding off the stain they just finished applying), Rheana and crew were super easy to deal with and never made me feel like I was being a pain. Bad company. They painted our house and we had to have a professional contractor come and fix it after all was said and done. All the company did was send people to talk our ears off about how good they were and how much they train the kids. Including the owner. Galen and his team recently completed painting our 1930's heavily stucco'ed house in Victoria BC. Overall we are very satisfied with the job they did. They kept our property clean and tidied up every day and did a thorough job. Our house is old and not in the greatest shape and they did a very good job on the heavily textured stucco and peeling windows. But most of all I was extremely impressed with Galen's communication, time management and reliability. He was on time every day and an excellent communicator on all aspects of our project. He gave me great confidence that our job would be done correctly. He is also very hands on and open to feedback and doesn't stop until you're satisfied with the work. The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars is that a little more attention to detail could have been taken during the initial prep work, although much of this was caught and completed in our final walk though. While he and the team are not 'professional painters' I would certainly recommend them if you are going the 'student painter' route. I hired Student Edge Painting to paint the interior of my home after having FIVE painters come to my home for a bid. Two of those never actually submitted a bid. The reviews I read for Student Edge were good (other sites) and the price was right. However, the price increased $500 after they didn't estimate the job appropriately (forgot primer and not enough paint). I would have done better doing the job myself. I had the trim/baseboards painted, and all rooms except the kitchen. There is paint on the carpet, paint on my brand new pergo flooring, wall paint on the trim, trim paint on the wall, paint in my sinks, on the toilet, bathroom mirrors, drips on the trim and walls and just a very poor attention to detail. The paint is still very uneven in many places. The group did come out to fix the issues and fixed some of them, but during the "fix" it became apparent that they just didn't know how to paint and it would never really look fixed or close to professional. I was so frustrated, I just finally paid them so they would leave. I do NOT recommend hiring students to paint the interior of your home. The guarantee is not real when the painters don't know how to paint. read more

We had (my initial post) an issue when the house was first painted with the quality of the job, but I wanted to update to say that the owner reached out and went above and beyond to redo the work to a great standard and stand by their work and company. We had some ups and downs there, but I definitely appreciated a willingness to do it right. We had our two fairly large decks painted by Scholar's Edge, in Calgary, and the work was done as they'd specified, thorough scraping and cleaning, then two coats of high quality deck paint. It took them three or four days (not sure) working full-time, and we were, and still are, a year on, very happy with the results, and the price, which we found reasonable. Will not refer. Primary concern was safety was not efficiently practiced and equipment not proper for the job eg: leaving tools on steps overnight and ladder safety against 15-17 ft walls. In addition, the work was very sloppy that it is costing me more in cleanup (eg: paint spills on carpet and hardwood) and re-doing the work (edge cutting, rubbed off ceiling). I speak as engineering business owner having mentor-ship programs, safety training and certification is critical practice to the business (or any business). Scholars-Edge has good sales; but training skills including safety and operational supervision of young 'inexperienced' employees very lacking. read more

Don't be put off by the name STUDENT EDGE. This is a professionally run organization. The employees, I believe, are for the most part students, but they are supervised and trained by professionals. Student Edge was recommended to me by a friend. The representative, Leon Voorhees, was on time, listened to my concerns about painting my house, did a wonderful job explaining the process of safely removing the paint and disposing of the old paint that would be scraped off. They tested it on site for lead and as it showed positive, they will follow new guidelines for its safe disposal. Leon met with me the following day to explain the quotation and options for painting the matching garage. I'm very happy with the process so far. His quotation came in the same as one other painting outfit I had previously contacted and way lower than others. I decided to go with Student Edge based mostly on cost and professional conduct. The work will be done when when the rain starts easing up here in Seattle. Look for my report as the job proceeds. I am 100 percent happy with Student Edge and would recommend the company to anyone looking for a painting outfit. read more

Although you may be worried of the fact that the painting of your home will be managed by students, I assure you they provide quality work, are always on time, and get the job done in a timely fashion unlike many other painting companies out there. Our house is big, three floors and it is painted several colors, plus we have a conservatory across the front of our house and we also needed the glazing to be redone. Student Edge said no problem, they can do anything! From the very start there were problems. They simply bit more off then they could chew. They made many attempts to do the glazing, and it was very clear after the third attempt, that not one person knew anything when it came to glazing. They took forever painting, & most of the painters had no idea what to do or how to paint. And about half way through the paint job, the dog walks into the house with paint all over her paws, the very same colors that the house was being painted in. I was furious because I didn't notice the dog right away, until she got paint all over the house. I went scouting into the yard to find what she had gotten into. To my surprise, the painters had been dumping the left over paint in the woods along the side of my house................................. I was shocked to say the least, (pictures are available of the dog and woods.) They did come over and try to clean up the paint in the woods; however, they tried to make light of it, when their whole company philosophy is that they are "GREEN." They kind of finished the work, for we never really knew what they had painted and what they didn't paint. Months later, we found numerous areas & spots that were not painted or like today, I washed the car and there are so many paint spots on my car, they never covered it, when they painted. Boy what a mess they made. If you don't look real close @ the glazing or paint job, it looks good from a far. Again, they simply were not prepared, so if your house is small with limited colors, and no place for dumping paint, they should do a fine job on your house, otherwise, I wish you the best of luck when it comes to Student Edge painting. read more

We did not have a good experience at all. The manager who came to our home in leduc showed up 1/2 an hour later for the initial consultation to begin with. Once they began work they doubled booked and the 2 day project turned into a 5 day project. They sent only one person the first day and they didn't tape anything off or use a drop cloth on our brand new carpet!!! They also didn't bring any ladders to begin with, and my wife caught the worker standing on our chairs. After complaining to the manager they finally got more people to work on the house and they managed to get paint on our brand new base boards, cut in with a different colour, paint on our newly capped trusses, and did not properly sand or fill the holes discussed in the initial quote. After they completed I phoned and complained to the owner and he was understanding and assured us he would make it right. However the same crew came back and fixed a couple things, and managed to get paint on our carpet, even more noticeable paint on our trusses and missed half the screw ups from before!! Can't speak for the entire company but the group in the edmonton area was not great read more
