Allerton Library is at the end of all the shops on Allerton Road. A busy little library that you…read morecan walk around in about 1 minute. Small it might be but 100% better than Childwall Library which has definitely seen better days. Allerton Library is modern (it isn't dated on the inside) and well equipped with a computer suite, tables to sit and work or discuss the challenges of the day at and as you would guess many many books. The library is very accessible with a long ramp up to the entrance. There is no waiting about to take your books out, as if you are registered, you can take them out via the self service machine. The opening hours are pretty good Monday to Wednesday, but go a bit down the pan on the remaining days. Longer opening hours on these days would be good, or maybe that is just me - I guess it cannot hope to be a 24hr tesco's.

Anyway, this is not aided, in the case of Allerton library, by the smallness of it and hence the additional feeling of claustrophobia. From the exterior the building looks shabby and practically abandoned. Inside, it's a little gloomy. Chances are, they've refurbished it since I last went in (at least 5 years ago) but there's a good chance they haven't. Having been somewhere I went to almost on a weekly basis as a kid, I can't imagine it being that inviting in its current state. Still, like I say, it might been brought up to date. Some of the books definitely needed replacing and a few extra staff wouldn't have been a problem. Despite all this, it's a nice enough place for small family outings, and less formidable than the huge main library in town.

If they havnt got the books you want they order them for you from other libraries and send an email or phone you up when they arrive. plenty of seats are available so you can spend time reading in peace and quiet. They also have several Pcs available for browsing the internet,but be warned these are popular and you usually have to book the day before.

It is a vast building filled to the rafters with every book on any topic you can imagine. It is the biggest library in Stockport. On the main floor you can nosey at all the books, use the internet for free (which you have to book in advance), browse the dvds and pick up information on classes and courses available in Stockport. Upstairs is the reference library which houses thousands of newspapers on film, maps, reference books, magazines and newspapers, and some wonderful historic books about Stockport. The staff are so helpful and will assist you to find any book you require. You can take out a library card and borrow up to 10 books at any time.

However I don't think the range of books is as extenisive as it could be there is a small selection of every genre but, it's never quite enough and I often find the shelves disappointingly sparse. Although, the children's section is great and very populare, which is important in a community library. There is a cafe and toilets available and lots of staff on hand to help with any enquiries. You can also pick up leaflets and guides on the local area: its amenities and centres as well as information on forthcoming events across Sefton and Liverpool

This is a really pleasant library to spend some time in. Looks really grotty from the outside but…read moreinside it's light and airy with plenty of room to sit and spend time. A good selection of books in the children's department which is where we tend to aim for with a good cross section of fact and fiction. There is a dedicated teenage section which I think is always a good idea as I don't have my children picking up age inappropriate books. There are Friendly staff who will always help you look for anything if you need it and the computers always seem to be full of children doing their homework or people researching their family tree. All in all a nice library where you would be happy to choose books.

I mean, West Kirby Library is ok as it has a few computers that you can use the internet on and a wider open community space. But really, all the libraries are old fashioned and seem to use archaic equipment. When you go travelling you notice that in other countries such as the states and Australia, libraries can become community hubs for serious intellectuals and learning. Pensby library doesn't seem to have that. They have a minimal range of popular fiction, children's books and nonfiction books. They have three or four outdated computers for community members to access the internet, and they have a dull, drab 70's style building that could do with a revamp and a refurb. The staff are friendly enough, and they are happy to ring around other libraries to track down the title that you are after. But I really wish that the libraries in our peninsula would get a bit of money spent on them for the sake of the community as a whole!

They can get any book from across the St Helens area relatively quickly and being a member there means you a member of all the libraries should you be passing them. The parking is shared with the shops so isn't great and is limited to 2 hours. They have a lot of activities on in the summer for children.
