I was pleasantly surprised when I visited the campus... everyone was really friendly and the campus has a lot of wildlife roaming around. Kerrville is a nice size town and an easy drive to San Antonio. read more

The environment: The Texas Hill Country is a beautiful area with much to do outdoors. The campus is situated off of the "city center" where you would find the markets, shops, etc. While this is a beautiful place, there's not much in terms of activities in town for students. (There's only so many times you can go to the river or bowling before you get bored.) So, you have to mainly rely on the campus to provide for any and all activities unless you want to take the drive out to San Antonio for some fun. The food: Schreiner has one main dining hall, and one eating area that serves things like burgers, wraps, etc. The main dining area serves food from Chartwells. While their chicken fried steak is a favorite on campus, the remaining food leaves much to be desired. The eggs, butter, and other products used a lot during cooking are some sort of food alternative. (powdered eggs? I don't even know what the "butter" is.) There are many surveys taken throughout the year on what should be changed, but oddly enough, I never saw any real changes. Furthermore, if for some reason you need to eat at an unconventional time, you are all out of luck. Even though the dining hall is open "all day", food is only served during the peak times. (9 AM breakfast, noon lunch, 6 pm dinner) If you need to go get lunch at 2:30 because you were studying, and forgot, I hope that the welted lettuce from the salad bar is okay. If not, there may be some leftover pizza slices under the warmer. With that said, the kitchen staff is the nicest faculty you will meet on campus. The staff: Let's talk about tenure. There are several professors that have tenure at Schreiner University. This means that they hold a permanent position on campus. (and essentially cannot be fired) Do you see where I'm going with this? This means that several of these professors do not care what they teach throughout the semester let alone what you get out of the class. And, seeing as though this is a very small campus, the odds of you getting one of these teachers is high. Good luck. The "Schreiner Promise": The school has a promise that they "follow". This promise states, "Schreiner University is committed to the advancement of learning and service to society. This is best accomplished in an atmosphere of mutual respect, concern for others, and academic integrity. By choosing to join this community, I accept the obligation to live by these common values and commit myself to the following principles: 1. I will commit myself to the pursuit of knowledge with personal integrity and academic honesty. 2. I will support a culture of diversity by respecting the rights of those who differ from myself. 3. I will contribute to the development of a caring community where compassion for others and freedom of thought and expression are valued. 4. I will honor, challenge and contribute to the scholarly heritage left by those who preceded me and work to leave this a better place for those who follow. 5. I will enter with hope and leave with achievement." How lovely, right? If only this were something that the faculty and student upheld. There have been very open (think mass campus-wide emails) anti- gay remarks from professors, extremely inappropriate sexual conduct from students, and a very slow response time from those who should be monitoring these incidences. ALL students should feel welcome and safe on their college campus. Students should not be holding competitions for how many girls they can sleep with before the end of the first week (resulting in a very large spread of STIs). Lastly, these issues should not be dealt with AFTER they have become an extreme issue on campus. If you "break the mold" of the status- quo from the 1930s (i.e. are of the LGBTQ+ community, are a woman in a professional field like business, or want a very open-minded and caring environment to learn) then I'd think twice before applying. read more
