This was a great place to go thirty years ago. I worked nearby, and every other Friday afternoon, my co-workers and I would get together for an hour or two of very enjoyable dining. Flash forward a decade or so, and the place was completely different. I assume there was a change in ownership and/or management. Prices went way up, quality and quantity of servings plummeted, the ambience devolved from "Charming Old World Hofbrau" to "If you're over 30, you have no business being here" and our waiter could have been the "I don't want to get Snooty" guy from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Recent reviews give me the impression that the restaurant has returned to its original form, and I'm pleased if that's really the case. Still, in a city full of restaurants with excellent food and hardworking servers, it only takes one bad experience to undo all that goodwill. read more

This is a German style beer hall-tavern/sports bar in downtown near/in the financial district. There is limited paid street parking and paid lots throughout the downtown area. There are less, but still some homeless in the area so be careful. The inside of the restaurant has beautiful woodwork on the floors, ceilings, bar, and tables. While service on our visit was very good, according to other Yelper's experiences, it is hit and miss depending how busy they are and who serves you. On our visit, we got the Bavarian giant pretzel, the sausage board, Diet Coke and two cocktails. They have happy Hour discounts on drinks and some American style appetizers currently M-Fri 3-5. We came in at about 6:00 so we missed it. Most other restaurants in Southern CA have more extended Happy Hour hours due to the fact that most working people cannot get there till after 5:00, so Schroeder's ought to consider extending it another hour or two. Of the two full priced cocktails we had, the Golden State of Mind was just ok, but good enough to get again. I almost asked them if they could make it without the "butterfly pea tea syrup," and would consider asking if they would do that on a future visit. The Orange Kush had a similar flavor to the Golden State of Mind, was also just ok, but not good enough to get again. Surprisingly, the diet cokes came in the small glass bottles and so were NOT refillable like at almost every other bar/restaurant around the country. For post-COVID and inflation pricing, it is insulting to customers to not offer refillable fountain drinks for the prices charged. As for the food, Schroeder's can only be compared to similar German restaurants in several other cities we have visited around the country--the Sausage Garden in Solvang is the gold standard in our experience. Schroeder's Bavarian style giant pretzel came out piping hot and was properly cooked, two things most other places fail to do. They probably have the best pretzel with the Sausage Garden and the Golden Circle sports bar in Treasure Island in Vegas having the second best. Schroeder's sausage board is actually a really good value at the current pricing--$45 for 5 sausages compared to $20 for one sausage with sides for each plate. The first five sausages on the current menu were included. However, only the Bratwurst was any good. The frankfurter, basically a hot dog, was just ok. The other sausages were really awful and not worth getting. We hate wasting food and so we choked them down, but we really disliked them. Schroeder's really ought to research the kinds of sausage and the food sourcing on the Sausage Garden's menu and copy them to improve their sausages. In terms of other ambiance issues, we were very glad to sit at the outer edge of one of the large shared tables--we do not like meeting other people at restaurants like this as other people do. There was only one other couple at the far inside end and we did not have to talk to them. Sit at the bar for less interaction if you are introverts like us or make sure to get a shared table if you want to meet some people. However the main issue was that there was a VERY large party right behind us and they were VERY loud. We believe they ordered some sort of large shots and maybe nothing else and left. Our waitress ran out of the restaurant chasing them and then we overheard her telling other waitress that the large party did not pay. On the one hand, this was surprising because they all looked like young professional business people, on the other hand was not surprising as we have witnessed multiple incidents of shoplifting in the area. Regardless of the reason, sad state of the country when young professionals are skipping out on their bill (and of course no tip) which must have been in the hundreds. Additionally, not a good situation because such incidents always have the risk of becoming violent and we don't want to be involved in that. On the whole, the 3.6 Yelp average is about right for this place. We would come back and they are worth a try for their pretzel and drinks, but avoid the sausages and soda. We think the schnitzel and other fried foods are probably a safe try. read more

They have a great happy hour, lots of seating, tasty food, and excellent beer selection! There's a lot of TV's and they have beer hall style long shared tables. We like the lemon pepper wings - super flavorful and crispy. It also comes with a roasted lemon to squeeze more lemon on and these shishito peppers that are super tasty and not spicy at all. It's been ages since we have been here, so we were excited to stop in for lunch last week. It was fairly quiet when we stopped in on a Friday afternoon, and we grabbed a couple of seats at the bar. This restaurant continues to feature all the fun German beers that you can't necessarily find elsewhere. Also a good selection of some fun localish beers (henhouse is always a fav). I went with the big chicken (for the high abv, I was surprised this was served in a stein, but not complaining). On to the food, love that they have a lunch special - pick an appetizer, main dish, and a cookie is included for dessert! Love coming to Schroeder's! Brings back fun memories when I came here after work. Came here for happy hour (Monday-Friday 3pm-5pm) and it's a solid deal. Tried several items from their bar bites menu - the Giant Bavarian Pretzel, Fried Chicken Sliders, and Kartoffel Tots were all good bar food options. Had their fruited sour that was from Fieldwork, which was $2 off during happy hour. The happy hour pricing makes it a great spot to grab drinks and snacks after work. Came to Schroeders and ordered the Jager Schnitzel - pork cutlet, smashed potatoes, sauerkraut, mushroom gravy, and lingon berry jam. I also ordered a side of fried brussels sprouts. The service was great, and the food was fantastic. The pork cutlet was thin and moist. The garlic smashed potatoes were from fresh potatoes, and the homemade sauerkraut was perfectly cured. My favorite drink is their Golden State of Mind - fruity and sweet. Also tried Strawberry Kush, which has a nice smokiness to it but has too strong of an alcoholic taste for me. We came in with a large party of 18 people, reserving a table from 6-8PM. First thing I noticed was the restaurant was fairly empty besides 2 tables including our own - maybe a reservation wasn't actually required Upon entering, we were seated in the middle of the restaurant in a beer hall communal table and bench. Not so much privacy, and felt very communal. Drink orders and appetizers orders were placed and served within 25 minutes, before our entree orders were ready to be taken. Maybe about 45 minutes later our entrees arrived. Tots (5/5) - no complaints. Other than the price. Pretz (4.5/5) - cheese sauce felt too curdled to be palatable. Mustard was a good addition. Meatballs (4/5) - only the mushroom gravy stood out (we ended up having to order almost 8 plates of these, in order to reach the minimum order size for our party) Fried Brussels (4/5) - good but not great. Very crispy, but felt like it was missing something. Maybe a sauce on top or balsamic? Sausages (1/5) - flavorless. I've had grocery store sausages with more flavor. The only redeeming quality was the slightly sweet Dijon on top. Dessert - we ordered the 3 orders of the Cookies (3/5) choc chip good, snickerdoodle very undercooked. Service was pretty OK, nothing to complain about, right up until the point where we were informed that because we had a large party that we were required to fit in a minimum order of $1,300. Mind you, we ordered nearly 8 appetizers and 17 entrees with add-ons, and a drink for everyone. Still didn't reach the order minimum by $300, so we were told to order food to-go and top off drink orders - so we ended up having to order 8 sausages and 5 meatballs. I understand a surcharge/added percent for a large party due to laborious service - but nearly $75 per person required? Considering one of the most common entrees are $19 (plus 7 for extra sausages) that seems exorbitant and almost exploitative. Go pretty much anywhere else and they'll not only be happy to take a large party, but won't require almost two peoples worth of food per person minimum. Overall, overpriced and overhyped. This is a cool German spot with a lot of German food specialties and beers. My suggestion is to get one of the sausages. The sausages come with garlic mashed potatoes and a mustard sauce to dip the sausage into. I ordered the spicy bierwurst which had a bit of kick to it. This is our first time to come to this place. Unfortunately Covid has really changed the dynamics of the environment. Heavy woods family style dining antique beer Steins behind glass very nice place. Not as crowded as expected. Music was a little loud and along the lines of RAP. Food selection had some thing for everyone. The schnitzel was superb as well as the sides, sauerkraut mashed potatoes and sautéed purple cabbage. We had a wonderful time. Update on my previous review. I am dropping a star because they stopped serving Pilsner Urquell in the Czech style mug and now is served in the German style stein. I still saw some Pilsner Urquell glasses but didn't get a good reason why they stopped using those. Regardless, this is the only beer hall I know in the Bay Area serving Pilsner Urquell so hope people go and support and hopefully we will get the original Czech mug again. read more

BAVARIAN CRISPY PORK SHANK: CRISPY SKIN VS CRISPY MEAT I came for lunch last March on a Thursday. That day was also the NCAA Men's Sweet Sixteen at the Chase Center. I wanted to have filling lunch prior to the tournament. I came here for one reason. In the past I was surprised that a German restaurant of this establishment in San Francisco never served schweinshaxe, which is a crispy pork shank that is a Bavarian specialty. So I was delighted when I read the menu online that this eatery served Bavarian crispy pork shank. Besides the pork shank I ordered the katoffel (potato in German) tots. When I have a chance I order tater tots over fries. At a German restaurant you can't eat a crispy pork shank without a liter of beer. I asked my server what beer he would recommend with the pork shank. He suggested the Reissdorf. I have no complaints with the tots. The beer was refreshing in early spring lunch. When the crispy pork shank arrived, I didn't see the skin. The thing that was crispy was the outer portion of the meat. I was worried that the meat inside would be dry. The meat inside was flavorful and tender - that may be due to the fat inside the meat. Sipping a beer and eating the pork shank are a fitting way to dine in a German restaurant. I had previously reviewed Schroeder's. My previous review stated that Schroeder's at that time didn't server crispy pork shank. If Schroeder's did I would rate the eatery five stars. I've had other versions of this dish. In Filipino cuisine that version of the crispy pork shank is called crispy pata. The main difference between a crispy pata and schweinshaxe is the crispy pata is boiled then deep fried whereas the schweinshaxe is slowly roasted. At one Filipino restaurant I ordered a crispy pata that had crispy skin but the meat was cold and dry. The meat of this crispy pork shank at Schroeder's was delicious. However I can't give Schroeder's a five-star rating because whether the dish is crispy pata or schweinshaxe the crispy skin is the most important aspect of a crispy pork shank. read more

I ate was a Hamburger with eggs & tater tots!!! Not only did I have those two items to eat.... I also gotta have myself a OktoberFest Beer as well!!
