Even though I've been there a few times, Wendel is a place that I am still trying to figure out,…read morenamely because sometimes it feels like a dive bar and sometimes it feels like it's trying to be classy. I think it's supposed to be the former, but the prices aren't necessarily reflective of dive bars: they're not super great but they aren't over the top either.
If you come in the afternoon, it can be cozy, with plenty of seating options. Just don't sit too close to the door on cold days, because it can get drafty in my experience. In the summer, try and grab a seat outside in front.
There is often free, live music inside in the evenings. I have seen a couple jazz groups perform here, which is always interesting and worth a visit.
The beer selection used to be mediocre but it has improved a bit in the past couple years - that or I just now noticed the extra special selections on the table that aren't listed in the menu. Other than that I haven't really tried anything else, though I have noticed that the service is super slow, which is likely my biggest complaint.
All in all, it's worth catching a gig here and hanging out with friends every now and again.
