Brunch on a weekend. Terrible service. Not only slow (1 hour just to get our coffees) but…read moreunapologetic and rude. When we asked why it was taking so long the response was "there is nothing I can do". No smiles. No apologies. Nothing. They did not even bring water for 45 minutes. Completely unacceptable. In other countries this restaurant would close down. If there had been an apology or explanation it would have really helped. But the attitude we received was enraging. The COVID excuse is wearing thin. If you don't have the staff don't take as many reservations. Will not be going back.

I'm from Freiburg and I've always really liked the Schlosscafe. Unfortunately, today on my mother's birthday, I had an experience that changed that. We were there with 7 children. After ordering, we sat patiently at an empty table for 45 minutes without coffee or any drinks, not even water. But that wasn't the worst thing. The worst thing: when I politely asked if it was possible to at least bring water for the children, our waiter just kept saying: "I can't do anything". It is understandable that due to the lack of staff after Corona, waiting times are higher and providing good service is more difficult. But you accept a reservation and seat guests, a minimum standard of service should be maintained. The situation could have been diffused quickly with a simple explanation/apology. But the waiter's arrogant response was the icing on the cake on the service that was below any acceptable standard. When I mentioned later that we would stay away in the future after this disappointing experience, I got the answer: "It doesn't matter, we're always full anyway". That may be true due to the beautiful location. But if the service continues to be abysmal, it won't always stay that way.

In the U.S., I avoid restaurants inside of hotels. That is definitely not the case in Germany. We…read morehad one of the best meals - no, experiences - here. The interior is traditional Bavarian...and, we were surrounded by happy locals eating and drinking with smiles on their faces. The menu is full of choices for a classic German meal. I can't believe it, but they even made liver taste good. Good wine, good food, and old fashioned service. I love places where the chef (who in this case was also the owner) comes to the table to talk. When he found me (shamefully) drinking white wine with Sprite, he became determined to improve my palate. He ran back to the bar and quickly returned with a true weissweinschorle...white wine with UNsweetened sparkling water. OK...I'm improved. And, I no longer have to be embarrassed for adding something to my wine in the interest of greater enjoyment! Be sure and top off your meal with some Schladerer schnapps. It's Germany's best schnapps and the brewery is right around the corner. But be warned...this is not your American mama's schnapps. Be prepared to be warmed from head to toe.

The hostess at the counter said they had availability and asked if I wanted to see the room first before booking, which was nice, but unnecessary- the hotel was one of the suggested places to stay in the tour book we had, and it hadn't let us down yet. It was a nice, traditionaly looking German room, with a balconey and nice view of the town. It was supposed to be a non-smoking room, but we could still smell a bit of the musty smoke coming from other rooms. It was still ok, and didn't bother us too much. It served breakfast in the morning, with the typical items which was good, and we also tried the restaurant in the evening- a heavy pork chop, fresh frites, and a glass or two of local wine and we left very full and satisfied.

Horrible experience, but I guess this is what's called "German hospitality"!?!? We went to the…read morerestaurant to celebrate my mother in law's birthday. I ordered a Lemongrass soup that was on the menu, deliberately and desperately looking for a dish without dairy. Menu indicated none of this btw (which is a pretty standard practice these days pretty much anywhere else due to high allergens) and getting attention from of our server to be able to ask was really at the bare minimum. I made an educated guess. Turns out, the exotic food that I ordered (which is made with coconut milk in any other place) is made with rich cream in this joint, so I asked the server NICELY if I could have my meal replaced as I was unable to consume dairy. What followed next, I've never experienced in my entire life at a restaurant. I was SCOLDED in a raised voice for not letting her know about my dairy-free needs. Not only that, but my mother in law had to pay for both meals, because the restaurant and the server couldn't do their jobs. If I had a severe enough allergy, I could have ended up in hospital, or worse, dead! This practice MUST change before anyone gets seriously sick or hurt but as far as the overcharge goes, I guess I can forget about getting a refund for an unconsumed meal... Your business wouldn't survive a day in Canada like this.

It is on the back side of the hotel so very quiet. Be sure to use the German rouladens (like garage doors that cover the window) to block out sun and any noise. Room 6 (3rd floor) also has a double bed but with a private bath that has a bathtub/shower combo. It is on the front of the hotel overlooking the Main Street. With the rouladens down it is very quiet. Both rooms were very clean, comfortable beds, plenty of towels, hair dryer and a mini fridge. The hotel has a Michelin rated restaurant on site that we ate at one night. The menu is not in English and wait staff spoke little English so it was difficult to order. We were not overly impressed with our meals here, and the meat one of us had was very tough. We ate at nearby Kornhaus for dinner the 2nd night and were very happy. Breakfast however was good with breads and cruisants, jams, boiled eggs, cheese, meats, cereal, yogurt, etc. Parking is available onsite but VERY difficult to access...you have to back in through a windy courtyard with lots of blind spots. Ask the owner to park it for you. We had a fighter pilot driving us so were able to do it on our own, but he also had to make a few attempts at it. They also offer free Wifi but its only accessible on one device at a time, and only in your room. Would stay here again, but would eat dinner some place else. Be sure to pick up dessert from Cafe Decker and take back to your room to enjoy with the view of the castle.

They were very professional as they offered us a table that had later reservation. The food was of good quality as we had the "uncle Hugo's favourite meatballs" and the beef with the gratin. Omas Küche is a decent restaurant -- one I certainly wouldn't mind visiting again, but not one to…read morewhich I would feel especially obliged to return. The food is good, standard, hearty Badisch/German fare prepared competently and served in a traditional Badisch environment. It's not the best German food you'll find in Freiburg but if you like this type of food, it won't disappoint. The service is fine as well. However, I find there are two main problems with the restaurant -- first, the prices are simply a little too high for the food that you get. These aren't ridiculously high prices, but for the food you get, I would have expected to pay less. Second, the only beer served is Ganter, which I always consider a serious downside to any Freiburg establishment. At a German restaurant, it's a big problem as I, for example, especially like to drink beer with many common Badisch dishes, like Leberle, for example. And Ganter is horrible beer. So I would not suggest seeking this place out, but if you're nearby and hungry, it's not a bad place to visit.
