The views were glorious, and we were lucky enough to get a room with a balcony that faced the mountains and the lake, it was such perfect scenery. The room itself was super clean and the bed was comfortable, albeit I'm not a huge fan of the separate blanket thing. We also had to call to the front desk to figure out how to kick on the heat #floridagirl (spoiler alert, there's a knob on the side of the radiator), but once it was going, everything was nice and cozy. And as I mentioned, the bathroom was big and had two sinks which is a plus. There was a lighted makeup mirror (yesssss) which is greatly appreciated, and there's a large bathtub for those that feel so inclined to bathe where 100s of others have before you :) They also provided nice bath amenities which didn't seem to be the trend amongst the other places I stayed at in Germany, so that's a nice extra as well. And that breakfast. delicious. Definitely not your lackluster continental breakfast with dehydrated eggs and pastries from a box. They had a huge variety and everything was kept clean and refilled regularly. They also offered us two bottles of water when we checked out. The only drawback here is that they are not all that close to Fussen's city center. I saw people say it was a 15 minute walk... but I doubt that, I'd say probably closer to 30. I can't fairly knock them for that though because that is partly why I booked this hotel - because I wanted to be a little more into nature and somewhere totally relaxing and laid back. Which Hotel Am Hopfensee definitely was. We did have a car, so we were able to drive into Fussen for dinner, but had we not had a car and had to stay in the general vicinity, the area is kind of sleepy. We returned to the hotel after dinner with plans to go across the street to the Irish pub... but it was a ghost town, like completely devoid of life inside. It was a cold night in late September, so maybe there is a little more going on during peak season, who knows. But just an FYI.

Both are a short walking distance from the castles, but should you need to take a horse and carriage for the one mile ride up to Neuschwanstein, it is 5.5 Euro per person and it is a shared trip. Now onto the hotel: We arrived at the hotel at 11. There was no early check-in. We had to wait until 3. Not a big deal. I made the mistake of booking a double when there were two adults and one child in our group.I lucked out though as they had a triple available-a suite, #15 with a double in one room and a single in the living room. It had an extremely large balcony with a view of Hohenschwangau and of the town. It was so big you could fit a couple dozen people on it easily. Bathrooms-We had two. One had a tub and the other a shower. There was only shampoo that I am guessing was to serve as a multipurpose soap as there was no body wash or soap bar provided. The hair dryer was on a tight and short cord so you had to blow dry your hair extremely close to the wall. You also have to press down on the hairdryer for it to work (you don't just press an on button). The beds were comfortable and there were televisions in each room. The room came with bottle water. Not sure if they were free, but it was convenient. As for breakfast, they had cold meats & cheeses, hot eggs, sausage and bacon, bread, croissants, 3 or 4 different kinds of cereals and fruit. There was apple juice, orange juice, water and possibly one other juice. Try sitting in the sunnier room of the two as you have views of Neuschwanstein castle. Overall, it was a good stay. Also note they do speak English there if you do not speak any Deutsch

The rooms were well-maintained and everything from the bed to the bathroom was pristine. One aspect that really impressed me was the front desk staff. They arranged castle tour tickets for us. Just ask at check in and they will have them for you the next morning. As for transportation, getting to the castle was easy. Either walk, take the bus, or a horse and carriage ride. Just a heads-up, the horse and carriage only accepts cash. Unfortunately, the hotel's ATM was out of order during our stay, but there was one located close to the ticket booth. Also, I recommend making the short drive to Füssen. It's a charming spot with little shops, good food, and great views of the mountains. Pro tip: take a pretzel from breakfast and enjoy it with a view of the castle

The bed, being the most important part of any hotel room, was extremely comfortable. The bathroom, while small, served its purpose, and there was a small sitting area should you have time to lounge around. I was quite disappointed that staff unplugged the small refrigerator twice during my stay, allowing the food I had inside to spoil. The refrigerator was provided by the hotel, in the room when I arrived, so if they preferred it be plugged into a different outlet, it should have been moved, and replugged-in - not simply unplugged. However, the wonderful breakfasts offered downstairs more than made up for this small mishap. Wifi could definitely be improved, as I had to log back in even just after walking over to the windows. Others in my groups experienced the same - very weak connection, even in the main house. But, you're not coming down to Hopfen to sit in your room and browse the news. :) If you stay here, do your best to fit in a sunset walk around the lake. At a fast pace, it'll take about 1.5 hours, so you might want to budget two hours... but it's worth it.
