If, like me, you ever struggle to choose between about three sandwhich options then you may be liable to be frozen in cant-decide panic at the endless choices presented to you by Abu Bakar! Even the halva section appears to be never ending! They sell a wide selection of vegetables, a broad variety of juices, endless rows of pulses, spices, herbs, cakes, bread, jars of pickled items, huge sacks of rice and flour - possibly aimed at businesses but may be handy if you live in a big house, loads of condiments (including some very mysterious and tantalising items such as a pot of chololate and cherry something...spread?...whose ingredients list was in Polish only). Homeware-wise they have pots, pans, crockery and kitchen utensils. There is also a halal meat counter. As Susan mentions, Abu Bakar is aimed at the Aisian community, but for anyone like me with boringly British culinary habits it is a fascinating and exciting place of endless possibilities and obscure and intriguing ingredients.

The shop is well stocked and laid out with fresh counted for fish, meat, cheese and cakes. They have an excellent wine section with a specialist roaming around nearby :) As a regular I have come to know the people that work there so it makes the experience all the more enjoyable. The quick pay service and the free newspaper for myWaitrose members is an added bonus. I go shopping on my motorbike so it helps that I can pack my rucksack and saddle bags as I go rather than all at the end of my shop at the checkout. Enjoy :)

The values championed by the Co-op movement as a whole are thoroughly laudable, so any Co-operative supermarket has a head-start as far as I'm concerned. This particular supermarket doesn't seem to celebrate those values very overtly though -- which is odd as I would have thought they were very much a unique selling point. Pickering's Co-op has an effective local monopoly, and this is reflected to a certain extent in its prices -- it's not the cheapest place to get your weekly shopping! The store also suffers from being small and cramped -- I'm sure most similar-sized towns around the place will have larger supermarkets than this. Choice is therefore rather limited. But the staff always seem friendly and helpful, and the store is clean and appears to be well-managed. All in all, it's not a bad place to shop, but it does have its drawbacks.

Morrisons 'market place' is a unique set out for a supermarket and you can find fresh fruit and veg along side a fish monger and butchers where just like the advert shows you, the staff will be more than happy to talk you through whatever cut of meat you require or even fillet your fish for you. There is also a bakery and rotisserie offering yummy treats such as pork pies and sausage rolls as well as hot roast chickens. Another good point worth mentioning about Morrisons is that they do from time to time do brilliant offers. It's worth looking out for them on the internet or in your local paper.

It is large enough to have a full range of goods that you would expect of Morrisons and is conveniently located for York city centre. Being brand new it is also clean and specious, There is also a large car park with petrol station and car wash available. Petrol & Diesel is usually the cheapest in York as Morrison's always seem to be the first retailer to announce price changes. This store is also on the same site as a large Homebase store and Frankie & Benny's restaurant!

Jacksons has been undergoing a switchover to sainsburys, or at least they are being ran by sainsburys, as they are stocking the producs, use the bags, and have the same uniforms, but the sign has not yet changed so I'm guessing the changeover has more to be done. The store probably needs a bit of tlc before sainsburys want to put their name on it. It looks like its been a while since its had a good makeover. The selection of items available is good though, all you would expect from a shop of its size. The prices aren't cheap, but for the convenience of it, you can't complain really. The staff are always nice, and the atmosphere is usually friendly. The only problem is that the car park could do with a few more spaces during busy periods, other than that a great place to get your late night shopping.
