When in a foreign land, I make it a point of obtaining some of that Country's currency. There were a number of Canadian bank branches (with convenient ATMs) in Downtown on Water Street during our recent visit to St. Johns. When I insert my First Republic (z'll) card in this situation, it always works, although I'm a little anxious until the money comes out. This ATM transaction was no different than the smooth experiences I've had before. More related personal experience: 1. I never exchange money on the USA side or though a currency service. 2. My bank refunds all the ATM transaction fees. 3. Direct cash tips to service providers are always better than a credit card. 4. Our Canada experience was more cash driven than at home in the USA. 5. Cash only businesses (including 1 Cab) still exist in Canada and elsewhere. 6. Only the Airlines didn't accept cash during our trip. 7. I love the multi-color (with plastic and hologram highlights) Canada bills. 8. Lots of Loonies and Toonies ($1/$2 Coins) make for a heavy pocket. 9. Scotia Bank ATMs give me a choice of bill denominations to receive. 10. US Coins (Quarter and below) sometimes sneak into one's change. 11. I return to Canada/Yukon in August.
