It is in a nice new building that is shared with Albemarle County. There are county ESOL offices upstairs and the county warehouse downstairs. Northside has a vast selection of books and other materials. You can do everything from check out a book to check out an internet hotspot for school work. Have kids and want to go to the Virginia Discovery Museum? You can pick up free passes here. The same is true for Va State Parks. The State Park kit includes a backpack with educational activities for kids. Interested in sewing or embroidery? Northside has maker kits that can be checked out as well. One of the services that I use are their meeting rooms. You can check out meeting spaces for 2 hours at a time. They are enclosed spaces with up to 4 people. It has an exterior monitor for presentations with multiple inputs. Don't want to come inside, no worries... they have drive up window to pick up and drop off books. Don't want to do that either? They have a great digital library where you don't have to leave your couch. If you want it, Northside has it!

Monticello is the estate of Thomas Jefferson and there is so much history packed into the tour but the beauty is what captivates you. The woodwork, the flooring, the artwork...I could go on and on. The tour guides are excellent! Very knowledgeable, engaging, friendly and they keep history honest. I loved that they stuck to the facts and told the history as it should, the good, the bad and the ugly. The estate is still kept immaculate and holds so much history in every detail. The view alone overlooking the mountainside takes your breath away. It immediately sets your mind to wandering and fantasizing of a time long ago and how spectacular it must have been to live surrounded by such beauty. I highly recommend and would recommend going in late Spring or early Summer or Fall when the leaves have changed color.

Monticello is probably the most famous of all the President houses (Mt Vernon may have it beat)…read more As a self-proclaimed Presidential history nerd, I have been to several presidential homes, libraries, museums, gravesites, monuments, etc. Monticello's history is the most interesting because of many factors including Jefferson's architectural obsession, the atrocities with slavery that occurred with building and maintaining it, and the innovations and experimentation Jefferson used while living here. Monticello is a huge operation. You should definitely get a reservation. You park at the bottom of the hill (or maybe middle of it) then you go through metal detectors and are now in the cafe/gift shop/bathroom area. From there you can take the 1/2 mile walk up hill to the home or take the bus. Once you are up top, you will be put into different huddles depending on your tour time. Oh, there are several different style tours, we just did the general admission tour. Anyway, you can walk around the grounds while you wait. The whole thing is very well organized. Our tour guide took us through various rooms in the house, pointed out various artifacts from Jefferson's past, told stories and was very knowledgeable when asked questions. The group I was in was probably 20 people. The whole tour took 45 mins. Then we walked the grounds independent of the tour including looking at Jefferson's family cemetery plot. My only issue is that I went on July 1st, 2026, so the whole back (or front) had a huge tent set up for the America 250 celebration. Not a big deal just didn't get the complete feel or pics.

Also, they are part of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library system, so you can always request books from one of the surrounding libraries and pick it up from here if they don't have a specific book you're wanting. And of course, their online OverDrive collection is fantastic and so easy to use. Everyone who works here is so nice and helpful, which really makes for a great readers' community. We love our local public libraries!!!

This Jefferson-Madison Regional Library located on Market Street in downtown is the first known…read morelibrary in Charlottesville The library was created in 1823 by a group of citizens that included Thomas Jefferson. For many years, this library was located in a building around the corner, where the Albemarle County Historical Society sits now. Charlottesville and Albemarle County purchased the old Post Office building in 1977 and after renovations and moving more than 90,000 books, the building became the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library on Market Street. I found the library's unique history interesting and visited last year. Although I did not check anything out they have an amazing collection. I would encourage a visit.

It's an excellent place to study, especially compared to the UVa. libraries or the libraries closer to or in Cville. The library is rarely crowded. Parking in the lot and on the street is ample. To top things off, Mudhouse and Fardowners are a short walk away. The only "downsides": open tables only and no study carrels. No coffee machines. No adult coloring book station. Oh, and you have to drive to get here, if you're in Cville. (Maybe that's a good thing for those of us who do drive out to Crozet.)

Deep in the nether regions of Alderman Stacks late at night is where it ends. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, the Steam Tunnels, if those are still open. Or the roof of the Chem Building. Or, if you're really and truly unlucky, one of the frat houses off Rugby and near the Mad Bowl. Wahoowa, bitches...and welcome to UVa.
