Osborne's for me then, is a real treat - encompassing a wide range of notebooks and pens as well as diaries, address books, (do people still use these? I hope so) notelets, paper by the sheet, stickers, rulers, pencil cases, plastic folder things, index cards, hole punches and card. There's a photocopying service that always seems very much in demand and a comprehensive crafting range where you can buy paper flowers and best of all GLITTER and they stock a nice range of cards and non-fiction books - the latter best described as 'stocking fillers'. At Christmas I also like perusing their calendars which seem to consist almost entirely of cute kittens or scenic shots of the canal network (but never both at the same time sadly). It's the place to go for reams of paper and printer cartridges and situated by the 22/23 bus-stops is the ideal place to waste a few minutes before your bus is due.

The cards are cheap, though they aren't exactly fancy or arty. There are also some gift items, though they aren't the sort of gifts that I'd be inclined to give anyone, unless I really didn't like them. It isn't a bad shop and, let's be honest, cards normally end up in the bin after a week. So spending lots of money on them is kind of a waste.

Unfortunately, Crazy Cards isn't as mentally strange as I'd hoped, and the cards were quite standard and typical to most chain card shops. Having said that, the prices of cards do not replicate other shops; In fact, the cards are very inexpensive, and you can pick up most for around 70p. On the occasion that I went in, the store was pretty much empty and very quiet. I think that if the radio was played in the shop, people would be more encouraged and enthused to browse through the shelves. The general layout of Crazy Cards is also quite standard to most stores, but it's easily to navigate between each section to find exactly what you want. I also think that the store could be improved by selling a wider selection of party gifts, as this would bring in a different set of customers.

Maddison immediately reminded me of this Sheffield gift shop and I was so happy to find a Brum counterpart! They have those good-enough-to-eat Yankee candles when you first walk in and as you go round there are just more and more wonderful gift ideas. I loved the cake stands and the cardboard versions that come as a flat pack. They have an extensive section of cards for all different occasions. The tea sets were so cute, especially the kids Hungry Caterpillar collection. Prices are a little steep however it's the perfect place to buy something special for a family member or a beautiful frame for your favourite photograph.

The combination of fragile looking vases and densely packed aisles means that I am constantly on edge - convinced I will break items or get told off by staff for messing up their display of scented candles. This is definitely the place to go if you need a smelly candle or a nice box of chocolates - up until very recently they stocked Thornton's but I'm not sure they still do - as I've hinted the layout is a bit confusing so they may well have been hidden behind a set of Monet table mats. Staff are pleasant even if they do seem to be on constant guard against shop-lifters. One of the better places to get a decent birthday card in Harborne though.

There isn't too much to say out of the ordinary about this place if I'm being honest; prices were average, service was pleasant as was the shop as a whole. I can't see Secret Crafter attracting visitors from all over the Midlands, but for those who live nearby it really is a great convenience to have.

You have to ring an old hand bell at the counter to get service. The books are displayed on an ancient cabinet by the door. There are odd scraps of stock on the counter, including a set of miniature padlocks and some birthday candles. The man who served me was nice, though he was confused when I asked him how he came to be a cobbler and bookseller. He said that he had "never really thought about it". I told him that I though his shop was brilliant and he replied "no one has ever called it that before."

Especially the staff, who are very inviting and chatty. Lisa's is also great to purchase wrapping paper and other tools to make your presents look prettier. I also find that products sold here are much cheaper than most chain card shops. One thing I will say is that the size of the shop is not ideal. He and his cronies dumbed it down and bigged it up until society really thought they could do it themselves. Only problem was it was probably done very badly, with little flair, and no tecnical expertise. Hobbycraft is much the same. I always feel that this is a place to occupy those with no creative thoughts in their own head and too little time on their hands. On the one hand coming from a Fine Art background myself I am kind of glad that people are trying to make and do at all its just its all soooo twee and derived. Ok controversial rant over. They sell a huge array of paints, canvasses, sewing/embroidery, and craft materials. They sell model making kits and gift sets, dried flowers and balloons. You name it and they probably have it. And its huge. But vastly overpriced. The thing for me is if you know what you want and what you are doing and you just want craft materials - its alot cheaper on the net. However if you do want idiot-proof step by step instruction on how to be 'arty' this is probably the place for you. Certain friends of mine will argue that this is a great place to get kids involved. My first stop for this kind of stuff is always hobbycraft as it is absolutely fantastic. It is a craft paradise and I am not sure there are many people which would hate it. So here is why I love Hobbycraft and will always go there for my craft supplies. The shop I am reviewing has the following address; Bentley Bridge Shopping Park Wednesfield Wolverhampton WV11 1BP This shop is my closest bunt there are a lot all over the country so go find the one closest to you to visit. Hobbycraft is easy to spot as it has a massive bright blue sign with Hobbycraft in yellow letters so you cant really miss it even if you wanted to. The name gives it away but this is truly a store for people to buy crafts or even for people to find inspiration to begin a hobby that they might like. When you walk into the Wednesfield store you immediately see row after row of crafts and there is a huge walk way down the centre of the shop so you can very simply find what you like. They sell all sorts from card making supplies to scrap book making supplies and then beading, paints, model making and knitting! In fact they should have everything you want to do with crafts there. The amount of stock they have is great and I went into there with a list of sticky backed magnet, small pegs, red ribbon, small A6 envelopes and butterfly embellishments. I found every single item in this store and literally within 5 minutes which was great. You see although everything is in slightly small packets you can still find everything as all similar items are in the same place so you don't have to go running around the whole store to find different items. The stock will all mainly have Hobbycraft on it somewhere and prices are very clearly labeled. The prices are not bad either as my magnet was £2 and that has made me 160 strips for my invitations. My envelopes were £3 and my ribbon was £3 but there are so mane metres of it which is great. They also have a good selection of everything you could want so for me I had the choice of about 20 red ribbons which was nice but made it hard for me to choose as its me. Then envelopes and card was in all sorts of colours so I found things that were very me and ended up getting exactly what I needed and wanted. Staff at this store are fabulous and I was surprised to find that whatever I asked for somebody could direct me straight there. Considering the thousands of items they have it was great that they could do this. They are friendly and I think because of the crafty people you get in here it must be quite a nice place to work. This store is very clean which is good and considering how small a lot of the items are it is always very tidy. The location is good too as it is on a business park so you can also go to Dorothy Perkins, Boots or even a cinema or for something to eat. It is a nice place. I like this shop and will always go and visit here if I need anything so I recommend to you all. Thanks for reading. xxx P.S This has been posted on another site but always by me katygriff
