I am a young new business owner who never had an accountant before, I trusted them because they are…read morea franchise. I agreed to hire Mr Jehan Anis as my accountant to conduct the legal tax requirements for my business in November 2014, VAT tax returns. On our initial meeting he offered me the use of his office as my companies registered address for the price of £9.99 a month but as a good will gesture he said he would give me the first 6 months for free. He advised when that 6 months free period was over he would remind me and that if I would like to continue to use this address he would then begin to invoice me. He also told me for this price he will allow me to send my customer returns to his office as a courtesy, which was very appealing as it is a necessary requirement for the nature of my business I used Mr Anis services for 15 months and at no stage was I ever reminded of the above, nor was I ever invoiced regarding. This is my first time using an accountant for this service. Last week, I contacted Mr Anis' office because I received notification explaining that his office does not accept parcels and all parcels received will be returned to sender, which of course surprised me as I knew I had customer returns due into his office and if those returns were sent back to sender it would very negatively affect my business. His response to my query was that his office does not accept parcels, and would forward my post for a cost of £15 per parcel. He then went on to remind me of our initial conversation in which he allowed me to use his office as my registered address and stated that as I had been using his address for 15 months he would now send me an invoice for over £100. Also that he no longer wished to work with me and that I should appoint a new accountant for him to forward my accounts to. Of course this came as a shock, as not once have I been invoiced for this, no reminder came after the 6 month free period. This was the first time this cost was being mentioned since our first initial meeting. Mr Anis conducted my quarterly tax return in which he invoiced me for this service, not once had I been invoiced or asked if I would like to continue using his address at a cost of £9.99 If it had even been mentioned once I would have queried it and found another address to use to limit my business cost as I am a start-up, one that accepts parcels as that service is vital to the running of my business. I explained to him that it unethical for him to invoice me for a service that he did not adequately provide also one that that he failed to adequately notify of the costs incurring. He did admit fault that he failed to of remind of the end of the 6 month period and fault that he failed to invoice me up until now, but has said that unless I pay the invoice he will keep my account documents hostage. I also believe he may have received my VAT tax return cheque which is owed to my business and that he is also keeping that hostage until I pay the invoice. As he has admitted fault, that his business has not been transparent in his dealings with me. I don't believe that I am liable to pay for his mistake. Not once after the first initial meeting was I made aware of the cost I was potentially incurring and as I was not aware, I was not given the option to cancel the service and find an alternative. I am running my business alone and it is my first time doing so, I trusted Mr Anis to take care of the financial documentation for my business and to notify my off all cost I may occur during our working relationship which he failed to do so. I believe he kept quiet so that I would continue to use this service without my knowledge so that he can stick me with a large invoice when I decided to leave. I believe this is something he may be doing to his other clients who also start-ups who may be naïve to the tricks accountants may play. he has not yet released my companies account documents , I believe he is keeping my tax return cheque also hostage and still has not given me instructions on how to change my address at companies house to avoid any penalties. He is purposely being difficult to disrupt the running of my company for no reason; I have paid all outstanding invoices for the services I was aware he was providing. This is not the way an ethical business behaves and this should be monitored to ensure that they are not conducting their business this way with all their clients. Some who may have been using them for years may have a very large invoice s to pay when they leave that they will be aware of.
