As an SDSU student, the Love Library is one of the best places on campus to study, get work done, and collaborate with team members. I really enjoy coming here because it's spacious, organized, and has three different floors that cater to different study needs. The first floor is open 24/7, which is perfect for students who like to work late or pull all-nighters. The second floor offers tech support, you can borrow chargers, check out laptops, and find tons of books and study rooms. My favorite, though, is the third floor. It's a bit tucked away and quieter, with plenty of tables and a calm atmosphere that makes it easy to focus. As an SDSU student, I really appreciate having a place like this on campus, especially during exam season. It's peaceful yet lively, and perfect for studying, doing homework, or just spending time on your laptop. As a student here for the past 4 years I do love the library. There's many nooks and small areas to study that aren't away from the main area - but you have to know them. At face value, the outside is WAY prettier than the inside. Once you go inside to the main areas it gives dungeon vibes. There's barely any natural light and the lighting in there is dull with a color scheme of grays. It's not very pretty. This area could definitely be renovated. However, the areas which are nicer with brighter lighting seem very new. The staff are also very friendly at the reception desk and they have chargers, white board markers, and calculators you can rent for free if you're a student! I think SDSU did a good job in structuring the school library but there's nothing special that stands out. I would love to see it renovated! Or at least have more natural light - most of the time in there I can't tell what time of day it is because it's underground. read more

This review is really just for the computer lab because the building is so large that there should be a bunch of different sections.The library here is so beautiful, its a pleasure to come here and study. I've spent a lot of time in libraries that weren't as up to date, and I have to say, that it makes all the difference. There are a variety of books, and a variety of things you can use to research different projects and different assignments. I was at the library almost 20× and 20 hours a week. I was always studying, and there's no other place to study it in the library. This library was really quiet, and they had many computers. Everybody here was really respectful, and they knew how to get work done. I have a seeker room here, we're all ball up in a corner and study for hours. There are a great variety of content regarding different books! The library has really expanded, over the years. There are a greater variety of economic content. And the space and renovation of the study room has been amazing. This is a great place to study in a great place to learn. And if they renovate the library more, more students will get an opportunity to express themselves and be better people, in the way that they study. The quiet study area was recently closed so there is no longer a controlled quiet study area. The 5th floor which is suppose to be the quiet study floor unfortunately is not controlled by the staff to enforce that it is a quiet study floor. There have been many times where several groups at once have been talking and this is not addressed by the staff. It's unfortunate the quiet study area was closed. This is a great place to study! There's a lot of open spaces as well as a 24/7 area so you can study at all hours of the day. If you do come into the 24/7 area late at night or on weekends, there is usually a security guard at the entrance that checks red id's (meaning you must be a student to enter). There's lots of printing stations and computers for students to use. Just make sure you know your sdsu.edu account info so you can access the computers. However, it can get extremely crowded during finals week and there is almost nowhere to sit. read more

This is my favorite place at SDSU. I come here to do my homework and just go on Tumblr or something on the computers. They have started remodeling parts of the library and I have to say its looking a lot nicer now! There are more computers now and they've added new tables with really comfortable red chairs. Overall I'm loving these new changes to what was already a great place. Staff is really nice and if you need to scan a book or notes try the cool scanner by the bathrooms. How can students study in this old place? - It's creepily quiet. I like a little chatter in my study environment. - The place smells of mold from old books, books older than my parents. - The elevators can sometimes be out of whack. - There's only one "Food Friendly" area in the Love Library alone. - Either the heater or AC is on blast. - One of the PCs in the computing area gave my USB port a virus. Luckily, my laptop's antivirus program detected and removed it in no time. - And worst of all, I was happily eating my lunch, saved it for later, and when I opened the container I saw a small bug inside! I saw this same bug while I was at the 3rd floor of the library. I'm giving this place an extra star for their extensive collection of research books, neat organization, and ample (virus-free) computers in the computing area. Pros: 24 hour study area and pretty spacious with many floors, both renovated and older/musty smelling. I don't mind the oldness; it gives it character. Lots of computers to use. Free wifi. Cons: awfully crowded and stinky during exam time. Parking is a betch. Seating is scarce. People eat and talk loudly. I remember 2 distinct experiences. Shall I elaborate? One time I was sitting at a table with a friend along with 4 others so it was already pretty crowded with all our books and laptops. We were studying quietly and the 4 lil boys were playing some WoW game or whatever hot new sci fi/shooting game boys get excited over. They call over a friend who is a bigger girl and she squishes herself next to me so I have no room for my study materials. She squirts ketchup and spills Coke all over the table multiple times because she's munching on greasy smelling crinkle cut french fries while her friends are hooting and hollering at their game. What a distraction!! Next time, I got a single person cubicle to study quietly alone since I learned my lesson. Out of nowhere, I kept smelling poo. I looked around because I assumed I was near a restroom, but I wasn't. It was the girl next to me who was silently, secretly ripping ass every so often and then she would look around to see if anyone noticed. I guess she had one too many bean burritos from the on campus Rubio's next door. Ughhh what is up with these smelly, inconsiderate kids?!?! Overall, the place is ok, but it's definitely not one of my faves to be productive. read more

With so many reviews about studying, study areas, and the etiquette of those studying, I think that those particular aspects of the library have been covered sufficiently by others. Therefore I would like to touch on three important areas of the Love Library, its collections, its website and its use for conducting research. The SDSU Library's collections are quite strong in certain areas and somewhat weak in others. (I will not elaborate on these until I write an update) According to wikipedia "The Library ...occupies more than 500,000 square feet seats more than 3,000 people, and circulates more than 488,000 books yearly (as of 2011). It has more than 2.2 million volumes, 4.6 million microform items, and 140,000 maps." This makes it a large University library. The annual budget is over $10 million, but the acquisition of new books seems to have dropped precipitously over the last ten years and the number of e-books in the catalog is alarming. The organization of the library is very good with reference and periodicals on the first floor and the second floor dedicated to computers. Call numbers A-H are on the Third Floor J-P on the Fourth and Q-Z on the Fifth Floor. Fortunately the library uses the Library of Congress Call number system and not the Dewey Decimal System like the San Diego County Library. These is a good media library in the basement with quite a few work stations and study rooms and also compact shelving for overflow. The web site, like the web sites of so many libraries is confusing to use. For some reason one has to go to a drop down menu to access the library catalog. This should be on the front page. The main page of the web site is cluttered and awkward to use. Who would think of scrolling down on the main page of the site? There must be thirty items one can click on on the main page, plus four drop down menus. The arrangement is not logical and there is no site map. Upon deeper digging, I was quite surprised to see that there are 72 staff members listed in the directory and there are some interesting study / research tips. I'm an ex-Library of Congress Researcher and was listed as a Professional Researcher by the National Reference Service for many years, and have used many University Libraries in the U.S., Harvard, Cornell, Georgetown, UCLA, are just a few. That is to say I have been around. As far as I know the SDSU Library does not assign research facilities to scholars and researchers. Nor is there any registration or assistance of visiting scholars or researchers. The collections themselves are somewhat limited for in depth research and a researcher has to jump through many hoops to use the special collections. One major problem I have with the library is that I come across so many mis-shelved books. Another aspect which I have find even more troubling is damage done by students, whether that is "carving" with keys in the elevator or writing on the bathroom walls. One would think with such a tough admissions policy, one would not get students who do this. Obviously this is a difficult review to write. I will add and edit it in the future. Strong Points: For the students there are plenty of multi-media outlets that one can seemingly think that this is a leading library in the nation for computerized facilities. A rather deep depth of books and periodicals, abeit many may be rather old in age. Lighting is adequate. The dome is impressive. Now for the weak points: availability of computers is horrible for both students and non students (the latter are confinded to one section). During the Spring and Fall semesters it is crowded, especially during mid term and final examination times. Maintenance of the library during these periods is horrendous, particularly the restrooms. Overall, it is representative of the campus: an overcrowded facility due to being on an outdated campus. read more

For the four years and some odd months that I've been going to State, the Love Library has been a couple different things to me. For the first two, maybe three years, the library was nothing more than a place for me to sleep between classes (and sometimes during classes). Those big, comfy chairs (complete with footrests) under the dome are a perfect place to use a laptop, or read the Daily Aztec, or watch beautiful women as they walk down the stairs. And those chairs are never in short supply. If there aren't any open under the dome, there are more in the RBR. If those are all taken, there are even more on the third floor. On occasion, I would go to the computer lab, or officially, the Student Computing Center, to work on papers, projects, and things of the like. When I got into the School of Nursing, the library became less of a place to just chill and more of a place to actually study. I tried all the different spots. I tried studying at the RBR, or Reserve Book Room, for a while. Or I guess they call it the 24/7 Study Area now. But anyway, after a while, the RBR was most times just too noisy for me to concentrate and get any real studying done. My train of thought would always be derailed when I overheard the conversation at the next table over about how drunk someone got and who they threw up on at the party the night before. More recently, I discovered the big cubicles on the third floor along the walls behind the giant book stacks. Each cubicle has high walls for privacy, two chairs, a power outlet, lots of desk space, and even a window with a view of Hepner Hall (or the Don Powell Theatre, depending on which side of the building you're on). Plus, it's dead silent, which I like. Much more conducive to studying, at least in my case. There are plenty of study spots in the library, but the third floor is it for me. One thing the Love Library hasn't really been to me is a library. A place for books, I mean. I mean, they have the books. They have stacks upon stacks upon stacks of books. The problem is, a lot of, maybe most of those books have been around since the time of Christ. That doesn't help me much when I'm trying to find the latest information about a certain nursing topic. But they do have endless other resources and a full staff of people ready to help you tap into them. Whatever you're looking to get out of the library, like information, a place to study, a place to sleep, or whatever, the Love Library will more than likely be able to accommodate you. read more

eh... the one thing that this library has going for it is that its named the "Love" Library...pretty sweet. And the fact that it has gotten me through MANY MANY all-nighters.... ugh just the thought makes me uneasy. but to be honest.... with the exception of a few places in the lib, its pretty dirty, old furniture, uncomfortable chairs, NEVER enough outlets, and the internet is SUPER slow if its more than half full in here. FRUSTRATION sets in QUICK during finals week for sure due to already not really wanting to finish that 40 page term paper but on top of that not being able to use Facebook or Yelp as a distraction?! unethical. i highly recommend the first floor of the Dome area back behind the computers where the rolly chairs are... comfy, usually pretty quiet, and everyone gets like 4 outlets. its my usual hang-out...heck i'll be here all sat night. PARTY. ugh. all in all I've seen WAY nicer school libraries but this place gets the job done and it has helped me pass my classes, in a way? so its gets an A-OK from me :) read more

So based on previous reviews I see that the Love library is an either hate or love kind of place.. and in my experience with it, I fall under the love category. I really do enjoy the library, but it is undeniably ANCIENT and seriously needs a makeover, it screams 70's. But it functions how it should. It has an amazing amount of books available and there is a significant amount of computers which sometimes doesn't feel like enough. (By sometimes I mean during finals.) There are quiet study areas in which I feel like breathing is even too loud but some people work better that way, there are also study rooms for when people want to get a little louder or need to collaborate with a others. There are also areas where people are a little louder and its okay, I believe it is the second floor of the library but not sure, they have couch chairs to nap in while taking a study break . The thing with outlets really depends on when and where in the library you go, sometimes there is no problem finding and outlet and other times up in the 24/7 area there aren't any available, but people come and go so it is not too bad if you wait a little bit. The library has many different places which can accommodate a variety of different ways for students to study, or just flat out nap. I go to the library a lot and it is great to be in a place where other people are feeling the same anxiety of having to finish a paper or project before the sun comes up. read more

What can I say about this place, other than that I practically live here. As a student, I can't imagine having a library that is not 24/7 like this one. Although the whole library is not 24/7, there is a 24/7 section in this place. I really like how there are so many cubicles for you to work in because they really allow you to focus and remove all distractions. They are very roomy and allow you to spread out your things even when you're in a cubicle. It only receives three stars because it is very old and can be pretty dirty in certain spots. Most of the library is either really hot or really cold...the non-reserved rooms are always hot and never have enough room for 3 people (which is the minimum necessary to have the room) As stated before, the best thing about this library is that there is a 24/7 section, but what sucks is that its not that big! read more

Could be better but it works. It is old, it is creepy but it works. The staff can be clueless but they have some expert librarians. Good sources for research are available. Students can leave a mess. This place needs to MAJOR cleaning by the end of the semester and it looks like a trash dump or major shelter. They should keep the whole thing open all night during finals. I suggest more cleaning during the semester especially towards the end. Not bad but it could be better. It is not a free school, it is cheaper than others but it should still offer a better library considering so many students almost live there during finals. read more

There's 5 floors, the fifth floor is quiet study and there's a room on the first that's also quiet study. There's group study rooms for when you have 3 or more people (and yes, they do go around and check!) Internet and cell reception sucks in some areas of the library. On parts of the second floor, Verizon doesn't get service while AT&T does. On parts of 3rd through 5th, there's no WiFi... in the middle of campus! The cell phone service I can live without since I'm there to study anyways, but some assignments/studying requires the internet! I do like that you can check out a book on reserve on the 2nd floor for 2 hours at a time. It's quite convenient when you don't want to lug your heavy textbook to school. I like the library itself but when it comes to printing and putting money on the card there is always an issue! I'm a full time student with deadlines and classes that I have to attend to. I went to the library to print my paper, tried putting money on my card and instead it gave me a guest card, which I thought will have my dollar amount on it. Even though I swept my card and everything. When I went to print it said I don't have any money. So I had to go back and ask the front desk guy, about the issue. In which he said that nobody can give me my dollar back, even though I didn't mean to get a "guest card" , I'm a full time student!!!!!! For a dollar I can print 10 pages! First off... the library is called the "LOVE" library.. how cute! =) I went to SDSU for undergrad and had a great experience. and now I'm here at SDSU for grad school, and still having a great experience. here are my experiences as: UNDERGRADUATE-- sleeping on the big comfy couches is a favorite past time of mine! Also, late night studying in the reserve book room. Using the computers between classes. Studying up in the bookstacks.. mmm.. smell of old books! Sitting in air conditioning on hot days! working on projects or studying with friends in the private study rooms. GRADUATE -- wow! haven't been here for about a year and half.. and now i'm in the love library every week for at least 4 hours! Usually in the reserve book room. However, today I have a great comment to make regarding to the computer services. I was so impressed by the helpfulness of the student computer services help desk. It's a good place to study. If you don't have an SDSU parking permit, prepare to shell out some cash for parking. It is rather large and I find it funny because half of it was redone to be somewhat modern and the other half is dirty and from 1979 or something. Musty library smell abounds in the old dirty area. They have some cool art on the walls and there are exhibits in the tunnels that lead to the rickety billion year old relic elevators. I got stuck in those elevators once. That was fun. The computer lab is old and dirty but with up to date computers, both PC and Mac, which is super nice for us mac users who like to bring thumb drives to work off of. The Macs also are loaded with photoshop and all sorts of great programs. Mostly, this library is a great place to sleep in between classes though! Especially when you're taking a heavy load with a few gaps in there and it isn't worth heading home! read more

Until this past May, I considered Love Library a second home for me during my undergrad career. Once you find a spot, just pop on some headphones so you don't get distracted by any of these sucky points I'll make. Some of the cool things about the library, is that you can email the printers and when you get a confirmation you can go to the printers swipe your card and print. No longer are the days you need to wait in line for the computers and print from there. Also there are several options for quiet study. I believe that they're working on a coffee cart in the library so students don't have to go all the way to Starbucks in East Commons or the Starbucks on College. But lets be honest, the library doesn't come without it's issues. -If you're bringing a computer up with you, as most of us do, you'll probably going to look for an outlet as you're looking for either a table or a booth. Watch out for those stupid booths that just have the outlet covering but no three holes for the plugs. Those can suck! You WILL find quite a bit of those when you get into the main library. - The guys who walk around in those jackets that make sure you're not eating food in nonfood places, drinking around the computers, checking your ID as the library closes, you're not a singular person in a group room, etc. While they are doing their job, sometimes they can be the most imposing people that can make you feel as if you're doing something wrong. - SDSU needs to invest in MORE power adapters because so many people need plugs and certain tables are left unused due to no plug space. Maybe that's my personal critique but when you have to spend an hour looking for a plug space during midterms, you'll beg for more wall adapters. - people who just talk very loud on their cell phones or to each other in the library. Do they not know the skit from All That? It's a library, be quiet. Or at least DONT let me know about the naughty antics your one night stand did. I've heard quite a bit of stories over the past four years. - most importantly, good luck finding a place to sit during midterm/final season. read more

I'm impressed by how many people study here after midnight. Once Starbucks kicks me out around 10pm and I need to get some more studying done the SDSU Love Library is a great place to study late at night if you are like me and can't seem to get anything academically productive done while at home. I know there has been a lot of crime on campus after 9 pm but they offer free security guard service to anyone on campus late who needs to get from the library to their dorms or to their cars. There are a lot of people in the library along with friendly staff that are there so you can feel secure. PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SECURITY GUARD SERVICE AVAILABLE TO ALL STUDENTS. Another thing I like about studying here is the free wireless internet, the private study rooms with blackboards and the many outlets readily available to recharge your computer batteries. But to be safe I encourage all laptop users to always have a surge protector on them in case all the outlets are full. In the evenings there is a security guard that walks around and checks for your ID. A downside of studying here is that people talk sooooooo LOUD. So bring your headphones and prepare to listen to your white noise app to drown out all the people around you who go there to "study" but don't actually study and never stop running their mouths (geez Louise). And if you're going here to study during midterms or finals I strongly recommend you reserve a room in advance or find a 24 hour diner instead. If you have nothing else to do it is fun to go there for the sole purpose of people watching ;) This is my second favorite place to study. read more

My favorite places to study are the food-friendly third floor (though it can be loud in the later afternoon), or the always-silent 5th floor. There's a lot of great things about the library-- 24/7 area, computers, cheap printing/copying, comfy chairs, rooms available for rental, cables for charging phones/laptops, a media center with music and movies... not to mention thousands of books! I've checked out a handful of those, and they've always been organized and easy to find. There's lots of sheet music too (for my fellow musicians out there). Good place, but it was confusing how to find a book I needed. I wish they have more helpful staff over there.

My first complain is that it smells like books. I know that they store millions of books, tons of old research papers, 600,000 government documents, 200,000 maps and that it's the biggest library in the CSU system, but a book smell in a library? My dad pays enough tuition, so can't they invest in a bunch of Air Wicks? Second, I know the library contains more than 500,000 square feet, but do they have to make the hallway and bookshelves so long? There is even a long hallway with no books at all, and all these weird things on the wall with all these colors. Someone told me that is art. What does that have to do with books? I have to pass this hall every time to walk all the way towards the elevators! I even went once when the elevators didn't work and I had to walk two stairs and open three doors. I have to take two stairs already to enter the library in the first place because of all these stones with names and years on them (?) so that makes it like five stairs total. Also, the books are numbered with all these long characters, like Q162.B188.2003. Whatsup with that? By the time I walked all the way to the bookshelves, I forgot these numbers already! And I forgot my pink Sharpie one day so I didn't have a chance to write it down and had to walk all the way back to borrow a pen from a pervert in an over sized Hawai shirt who asked if I was lost (?). Why can't they just put all different cute little Hello Kitty stickers on the books to differentiate them? Would be so much easier! In addition, sometimes when I come in here I have to look around with my heavy LV purse to find a spot. Some people use a separate seat for their backpack! I even broke my nail the other day, the poor girl at my nail salon is already busy enough. Also, they don't have some books that I use in class, which means that I have to ask my dad to buy them. I know SDSU has 35,000 students and the library holds 3,000 people, but can't they make a few extra copies and tables? Also, most of the books have a boring gray cover. The librarian told me "never to judge a book by it's cover", but I mean when I buy fashion magazines I always choose the ones with the most colors and pictures on the front. Have they never heard of marketing at this place? I do like the quiet study areas and there is also an area that is open 24 hours a day, but it's so quiet in there! I like to take a break from studying sometimes and catch up about my weekend plans with friends, but how can I do that if I'm not allowed to talk at all??? Do I need to walk that hall way again or something to go to another area? I will need to figure out how texting works but the T9 function on my new Blackberry is so confusing! Finally, the staff is so rude. I brought my chihuahua the other day, just bought her the cutest Burberry shirt the night before, and I was asked to leave because she was not allowed to get in! (** Aaaaaaaahhhhh. So, I just got my frustration of the week out. This is a library people. Complaining about the smell of books is like complaining that it smells like meat in a meat market. The place depends on the social common sense of the students. Goes well most of the time but there are some entertaining and/or annoying characters here. My experience with the staff has been great, they're always helpful and when popular books are not available, they have them send over from other libraries within a couple of days and notify you by email. The online system works very good, everything can be tracked and searched or is download able. I haven't had one time yet where they didn't have a book that I was looking for, including popular fiction books, psychology and science. Use the quiet areas inf you want to study in a quiet environment and stick to the computer and other places if you don't mind noise. No rocket science. You can keep books for 84 days and extend that period too. Use your common sense, braincells (that are left) and respect when you come here or use the online system and stay in your dorm. It looks like there's mixed views about the Love Library but I enjoy studying here. A library is such a vital tool and it's sad that many SDSU students don't utilize it... the database is amazing. But I really love the fact that I can walk down a random aisle and find a book from 1917 or view a video game exhibit featuring old atari games. There are plenty of computers available and I don't know if it's the ample amount of space or the typical SDSU student's mentally, but I can always find a nice quite table for studying. read more

SDSU University Library - The Dome - Libraries Near Me - San Diego, California

Every time I go to study in the morning, it is almost unbearable. The moment I start to concentrate, library employees, maintenance and janitorial staff interrupt my thoughts while walking by and conducting the loudest conversations possibly ever heard to mankind. Do they even bother to think that people might be trying to get work done? Don't they realize that this building is supposed to be quiet to begin with? Don't they care about the poor girl, 5 floors up, cramming for her final to obtain her M.D. who can't even hear herself think because their excessively loud, deafening, glass-breaking conversation being carried on in the basement is penetrating the entire building? Obviously not! Every time I come here to study, I try to find the most quiet, hidden, low-traffic location to sit, but these people eventually find me! Today I ran back into the furthest corner of the library, a section I didn't even know existed, and within 5 minutes I got to hear Shawntell talking about her daughters drinking problem! And that's the other thing, these people don't just talk about normal things... it's like freaking Jerry Springer in here! All in all, today I learned that Mike's wife is divorcing him for that trailor trash Bobby, Barbara just got fired for stealing books and selling them on Ebay and Shaudday is going to make her husband end his affair if he knows what's best for him. I especially loved how these people continued carrying on their conversations just as loudly when walking into the areas specifically labeled "Quiet Study Room." Somehow I managed to actually study some of the material inbetween these people's constant intteruptions and did halfway decent on the test. It was a miracle. Despite all that being said, those people have provided me with plenty of free entertainment. And all in all, the dome is pretty. So I can't hate the library too much. read more

Wow, for a university campus, this library really sucks! Most of the books are ancient (as in published a LONG time ago). They never have any of the books I'm using in my classes. You'd think they could just have one on reserve or something... but no. I think they tried to make it cool by adding that dome, but it didn't work. It's an inconvenience. The computer labs are pretty good, that's all they've got going for them. I can never find anything that I'm looking for. If I need a book, I just ask my boyfriend who goes to UCSD. read more

This library is awful. I tried printing one syllabus of 19 pages and it took 2 hours. The people working are the most rude and disrespectful people. The first time I printed the syllabus the printer only printed out the first page and then 75 blank pages that I had to pay for. They would not refund me. Then I went to the 24/7 help desk and they said they would print it for free. They gave me 6 papers that were not in order. So not only did I not get my papers that I need they did not refund. So I paid $44 to print 1 piece paper and 75 blank papers. They say you don't need a printer and have tons of printing options but they are liars. read more
